Re: does asset allocation shift when total portfolio is high?

The short answer is yes, the larger your portfolio with respect to your expenses, the more risk you can afford to take (larger % stocks, smaller % bonds). The reason is that with a larger portfolio, your can still pay your bills by selling stocks even if the stock market falls 50%.

I don't believe it would count as a distribution from your Roth IRA account unless you, e.g., transferred funds from your Roth to your regular brokerage account. Each of these accounts has their own settlement funds that are used for purchases and sales within the account.

Re: Can't access Roth settlement account

This is a Vanguard brokerage account? When you say you want to swap money market for total stock market fund, that sounds like you want to buy total stock market fund, so I would select "buy Vanguard mutual funds" then enter the amount you would like to purchase (an amount that is equal or less than the money market value). When the sale is completed, your money market funds will be used for the purchase.

Apologies if I didn't understand the problem correctly.

Contractors will charge whatever the market will bear. They seem to be constantly trying to cherry pick the most profitable jobs and throwing out sky high bids to see which will stick.

I'm amazed at what people are willing to pay for relatively simple and straightforward jobs like installing a water heater. $400/hour, really?

As soon as patients figure out not to ask or answer any extraneous questions during preventative care visits, insurers will change the game.

I don't think there's any way to win this game other than avoiding any doctors visits that you possibly can.

Re: Oil change frequency on older Toyota (w/ 140k)

Thanks all. Quick other question: is the Kirkland brand oil from Costco any good? I had previously used Pennzoil and Mobil1 for prior changes. And, when you guys buy your oil do you usually just get a few 5qts? Our Mazda needs 6qts, which is pretty irritating since 5qts are commonly sold when it comes to 'bulk' oil. I buy all my auto maintenance products from Amazon now. It's super convenient since you are sitting in front of your computer and have the specs of what you need open in one window and the choices at Amazon open in another window. No need to walk a quarter mile across a big box store to find something they might be out of. And I find that the prices on Amazon are as good or better than in the stores. No reason to look for sales...

Re: make sense to have kid #3?

This is of course a very complicated question and maybe one that's not best suited to a financial forum. Although having children is obviously a major financial decision, for most people who plan their families it's more of an emotional decision.

Since it hasn't yet been mentioned upthread, I'll add this minor data point because I've been reading about it recently and noticed the effect among my friends families. If you wish to build generational wealth in your family, an inheritance divided by two is worth more than an inheritance divided by three. In other words, families that have fewer children/generation have an easier time building generational wealth.

Re: Vanguard closing mutual fund prices for Dec 29?

I admit I only skimmed the thread, so apologies if this was already addressed, but am I understanding correctly that this error only affected Vanguard mutual fund shares held at Vanguard the brokerage, i.e. VTSAX shares held at Fidelity, Schwab, or wherever were not impacted by this error and customers at those brokerages are not getting revised statements? I don't have accounts that hold Vanguard mutual fund shares at any other brokerage other than Vanguard so I can't answer your question. Since at least some closing Vg mf prices were delayed, any institution that automatically pulled mf prices from the wrong source or too early in the day on Friday (I think the correct prices were available, at least for VTSAX, by 8-9p EST), could concei...

Friday's delay of prices is annoying, so are many errors people discussed here. But no one talked about the really big one: the account balance? I never try to reconcile my account balance like balancing a checkbook; I have no reasons to believe Vanguard would make mistakes there, or any other brokerages I used. But numerous errors in this thread is alarming. What if Vanguard short-changed me a few hundreds due to an IT error? I would never know. Anyone is concerned? I reconcile my statements every month against my Quicken reports and have never found an error by Vanguard in at least 8 years (probably longer). I have an older high mileage Toyota that I drive about 5-10K miles/year. The recommended oil change interval is 7,500 miles or 6 months. I change it once a year regardless and I use any oil that is inexpensive and meets the specs. Most of those oils seem to be synthetic blends these days.

Re: Choosing child over spouse for pension survivorship benefit

I tried doing just this sort of thing a few years ago when I retired. A state government agency-affiliated organization in my case. The paperwork was cruising right along through the process until near the end, when everything went through a series of checks before being finalized. In the end, naming the child was not allowed. The explanation I was given was that this was prohibited by a (I think IRS?) rule which stated something like the potential (actuarially likely?) benefit to the survivor cannot be more than x% of the potential benefit to the retiree. So, while naming the child seemed to be the most logical thing to do, and the first tier or two of retirement department employees didn't flag a problem with that, in the end it was disa...

We used to live in area that was convenient for our jobs but was a bad fit for us culturally and politically. We moved after about 10 years when we could afford to get out and never regretted it. It was the absolutely one of the best decisions we ever made even though it was a stretch financially at first.

I would consider carefully the effect on your children. They are likely being strongly influenced by the values in the community where you're living. Will a move mean better schools for them? Values that are more aligned with your own?

I had 3 Mutual Funds "change" price on Saturday and had similar mismatches between the Vanguard account detail vs other quote sources (Yahoo, Big Charts) as others reported above. Those new (lower) prices stayed the same today, so I was prepared to go with the thinking that Vanguard was just late to the table publishing Friday's results and other outlets were using old data. Well, Y/E statements are now out, and show the values as AGREEING with Yahoo/Big Charts, but DISAGREEING with the values STILL showing on-line when I'm logged into my account at Vanguard. I just did a very quick calculation and an annuity that paid a 33-year old male a monthly income of $10K/month for his remaining life (47 more years) with a 2% COLA and using a 30-y T-bond rate of 4%, is worth about $3.6M.

Usually that is done and updated withing 3 hours of the 4PM market close. Yes, they were finally updated if you access each individual fund last night at about 11PM EST, 7 hours after the market close. Again, those are usually updated within 3 hours of the market close. Bewildering it takes even that long because NAV Prices for Mutual Funds and Bond Funds posting the 4pm closing prices are usually calculated within 10 minutes of the 4PM closing thanks to computers, but Vanguard takes up to (usually) 3 hours to post them. yahoo finance is showing the right number (at least for one that I checked). How can you tell if it is the right number? For instance, i sometimes see yesterday's price with a price change. This is not possible except perhaps on a day that the ticker symbol goes ex-dividend and by coincidence. Sometimes the yahoo finance will have a time of last update, but it is still bogus. Morningstar has also had erroneous numbers this past week. True, I noticed that before too. But for this one I checked yesterday's closing price and today's SP500 change and then match to the yahoo finance's close price and it looks right to me. There's no dividend action on this fund. Whatever they're treating cotton with these days to make them behave like synthetics, it doesn't wash out like it used to. So don't be surprised if your new cotton khakis feel and behave like polyester.

I do this too, when I can. That way they can't screw around with you, making you sit around and wait all day for them.

Re: How to accept payment for a private vehicle sale

Go with the buyer to their bank. Wait in the lobby while they get a cashier's check made out to you. When they give you the check, you give them the signed title. Then go to your bank/ATM, by yourself, and deposit the check.

Re: Wild Caught vs Farm Raised Fish

Here's something to consider: can YOU tell the difference? If not, you're trusting the person who is selling the fish, a person/business who could make a very large profit by changing the label from farmed to wild caught.
