Re: Condsidering Moving to a HSA (Cigna - TDAmeritrade or Devenir) ...Advise from those that use one

We use the Devenir option. It’s easy. I have it set to transfer monthly. We use the vanguard 500 fund and its expense ratio is .04%. I believe they charge a small monthly fee on top, but I don’t worry about it since our employer gives us $250 per quarter for the HSA. HSA bank charges a service fee i...

Re: 30yr Jumbo Refi-- rates!

I know nothing about what a jumbo loan is. I just finished a refi with AIMLoan.com, per the recommendation of this forum. I started it prior to the Covid nonsense. They gave me a 3.375 rate, 20 years. They gave me enough “points” that they actually paid me to refi. I would have opted for a lower rat...

Re: Reduce 401k’s Contributions to pay down mortgage?

Thanks everyone for the help, motivation, pep talks. I think you all have convinced me to keep the course of maxing our tax advantage accounts, and as we get more money by salary increases, bonuses, side work, etc, I will add THAT to the mortgage. Hopefully we’ll still get it paid off pretty early.

Re: Reduce 401k’s Contributions to pay down mortgage?

Keep in mind that as a high earner, the immediate income tax break of aggressive 401k contributions can be very valuable. You might even knock yourself down to a lower marginal bracket. It would be worth doing the math to compare how much more in income tax annually it will cost you to pay off a 3....

Re: Reduce 401k’s Contributions to pay down mortgage?

I may consider forgoing taxable investments (probably not at your interest rate) but forgoing tax-advantaged is a hard-no for me. Great work. Yeah we currently don’t save much in taxable. I’ve had trouble getting my wife on board to save more than we are, which is understandable. She’s starting to ...

Re: Reduce 401k’s Contributions to pay down mortgage?

Since you can max out your 401(k)s, any contribution you don't make to the 401(k) is a permanent loss of tax-deferred growth. Thus, even if you invest in a bond fund which earns less than your mortgage, you may come out ahead, because the bond fund will grow tax-deferred, while money invested in a ...

Re: Reduce 401k’s Contributions to pay down mortgage?

Thanks both for the encouragement. We both saved “up to the match” starting at 23. About 4 years ago we really buckled down on the Bogle principles. We are fairly frugal, both drive old cars and work on them(I like to). Still take nice vacations. Our new 15 year mortgage payment is actually about $4...

Reduce 401k’s Contributions to pay down mortgage?

Hello all, I know this question he been asked a lot, but we are in uncertain times. I feel like my family and I have a heavy weight on our shoulders, our mortgage. Admittedly, I have been listening to Dave Ramsey a lot lately. I usually listen to his show because it’s interesting, not necessarily th...

Re: Help with first 401K - traditional vs Roth at 22% bracket

Most here will tell you traditional. It will take quite a large savings to hit 22% in retirement. But other factors come to play. Will you have a pension? Inheritance? Personally I am in the 22% and I split trad/Roth 50/50. I am trying to take advantage of the lower tax rates (3% lower) under the cu...

Re: ? about ROTH 401k Segregation of Contributions & Growth

THis was one of my biggest gripes about vanguard when my 401k / R401k was there. I kept track of it in my own spreadsheet but never found how they did it on their website. When I left my company and they rolled it into IRA and RIRA they somehow got it right. My current employer uses Voya and they do...

Re: Principal is buying Wells Fargo Retirement, which holds my 401k

I agree. My wife had principal while I had vanguard and it was not half bad. My wife’s 401k used to be with Principal, before I discovered this board and learned more about investing. But it seemed to have food offerings. Not sure about expense ratios though. I’d just wait and see what the investmen...

Re: Roth or Traditional IRA if nearing phase-out?

You have good options. Pick the target fund based on allocation, not year. Nothing wrong with selecting say, 2030, then in a couple years changing to 2035, 2040, etc to follow theb’glide path’ for your correct allocation.

Re: 401a and social security

Thanks fort the responses. I have no doubt that she will eventually get 10 years worth of SS pay in, she averages 3-5 years at a job. And because of that, her pension payout will probably be low. (It's 1.5% x salary x years). So if she makes $70K x %1.5 x 5 years of employment there, the payout is o...

Hello all, I have a question, i cant seem to find the answer to. My wife recently interviewed at a state run hospital for a job she thinks she'll get an offer for, in accounting. It has a pension, 401a, 403b, and a 457 plan. The pension contributions are included in the plan automatically. The 403b ...

OK thanks for the update. I will watch for the 1099.

I've already funded my 2017 Roth, and we are in no danger of hitting the salary max this year. Last year was kind of a freak/lucky year.

Roth IRA Early Distribution

Hello All, I have a question about an early distribution for my Roth. Last December 12/14/2016, I opened a Roth IRA with $1050 at Vanguard to go along with my 401k. Little would we know, my wife received a substantial year end bonus at the end of December that put us well over the maximum eligible s...

Vanguard Target Fund Changes

Hello, I'm new here, but I've been reading the forum for over a year. I've picked up a lot of advice here and it's helped change "my ways". I'm probably not quite a boglehead but working toward it. I'm 31, married, 1 child, and work for a fortune 100 company outside Denver, CO. Our company offers se...
