Re: Real estate income for Roth?

Since the person in question just inherited the rentals I am assuming they have other income to support themselves. If they are still working then as long as they have wages over $7000, 2019 contribution limits, the IRS does not care where the money comes from. If they are retired then I have to agr...

Re: Splitting Monies between multiple investment houses

I have accounts at 2 brokerage houses because each have agreements with fund companies that Can make it better for small investors. Example: At Schwab it takes $100,000 to purchase Baird and Pimco Institutional shares. At Vanguard you can get the same Institutional shares for $25,000. Then Schwab wi...

Re: Urgent: escrow situation in bay area

Guru, You are fine. I live and work in the Silicon Valley like you and have bought and sold 3 homes in the Bay Area over the last 20 years and have made a killing. I have had the same angst as you each time. Calm down, what you have to realize about the Bay Area your fixed mortgage acts as rent cont...

Re: Why open a taxable account?

I have maxed out my wife and I’s 401ks, Roth IRAs, HSAs and our daughters 529 for years. Then my parents died and left me an unexpected large amount of money and there is not enough room in tax deferred accounts to get it all in. So I started 2 brokerage accounts and invest in these and yearly I tak...

Re: Vanguard Extended Market Index Fund

I have owned this fund for years in my 401k. I have been very pleased with it. Holds mid, small and even some micro companies. Very low fees and turnover and has over 3000 companies in the index. It is my main mid/small cap holding.

Re: I reduced my exposure to US stocks before the correction.

I also reduced my exposure to US stocks as they ran up in the last few months prior to pullback. No market timing just planned rebalancing. Making portfolio a little more conservative each year as I am 4-5 years from retirement.

Re: Do Preferred securities let you sleep well at night?

I own preferred stocks but I keep the at about 5-7% of my fixed income holdings. They have done well but if your friend thinks Preferred stock will
Allow him to sleep well at night, he has no idea what he is invested in.

Re: Dividends

Reinvest in tax deferred and Roth accounts. In taxable I normally reinvest dividends unless I have a burning desire, for whatever reason, to add money to a different asset class than the dividend came from. I have never had a problem with taxes, pretty straight forward.
