Re: Medicaid end of life financial recovery

The article seemed biased to me--like it was almost a crime that Medicaid would seek reimbursement from an asset after someone died. Why shouldn't the person's estate be used to settle their medical bills? The heirs (children) want the houses for themselves, while the taxpayer shelled out hundreds of thousands of dollars for end-of-life care.

Re: Furniture prices... is this normal?

The other thing I would suggest is furniture covers. They come in several colors and are fabric--depending on the design, there might be pockets on the sides for remotes (or, if you have kids, used tissues and candy wrappers, but I digress...). Anyway, I find them handy because they can be pulled off and washed (in a regular washing machine). Easy to get off stains, spills, and pet hair, and you could inexpensively change things up if you redecorated. Is there a good brand of cover that you would recommend? A relative is selling a 2nd house and giving me a really nice leather sofa. I have cats and a dog, although the dog is not allowed on furniture, he is big and boisterous and his toys slide under my current sofa. I had leather many years...

Re: Greenlight debit card for teenager.

Our kids got debit cards attached to their accounts. I think they added a checking account, in addition to savings, and they can transfer between them as needed. If you talk to your bank/credit union, you may find that they have some kind of "young savers" plan, with lower minimums and other features designed for teens.

We'll stop when DH retires. As others have said, it's all about the company match--why give away free money, even if you have enough saved for retirement?

I will also add, the miracle of compounding truly is a miracle. When you start your "real" job in your 20's, retirement seems too distant to really think about. Next thing you know, you're 60. If you've been putting even small amounts away and leaving it to grow, you're worth 7 figures. Amazing!

Re: Kid's Accounts and How They Use Them

My kids are a little older--my "baby" just turned 18--so take my numbers with a grain of salt: My late MIL would give each grandchild $500 for Christmas. My arguments that my 3yo didn't need so much on top of generous gifts fell on deaf ears. So, here's how I handled it: The $500 went into savings. Any gift card received were spent soon after Christmas, generally on expanders of gifts or that one thing they wanted, but didn't get. Later in the year, on a family trip to Disney World, I'd withdraw $100 per child (I would go higher now--this is ~15 years back). Each could spend $25 per park, rolling over unspent money. I would remind them that the money was a gift from Grandma. We only had one problem with this, when one child spent ...

We actually have one cat--ONE!--that will tolerate me bathing her. She won't be happy, but I can. HOWEVER, there's a reason: I found her (and two brothers) when she was 3 weeks old, so I have been bathing her since she was tiny. She sees me as "Mom" (I fed her, too). So, she puts up with it from me.

We've had success with Revolution Plus. The regular Revolution stopped working for us--one of the cats was scratching herself bald, poor thing! The others were fine. But, we switched them all over. They all go outside, as does the dog, so in North Carolina, it's year-round treatment. We also get the house sprayed once a quarter.

It's not cheap, but our pets are happy and healthy.

Definitely have him speak to the office of special services. They will help him with any accommodations he needs and is entitled to.

One thing our local university has is a way to not only record a lecture, but put in a "mark" for a passage that you can go back and highlight.

Two of my kids have special needs and go to this university. My DD20 (ADHD and some processing issues) helped test this software for the university. She recommended it to her brother, DS26 (autism and some processing issues--different ones from his sister). It really helped both of them. The software was purchased, not developed in-house.

I can't say enough good things about the office of special services, too.

Re: Do you use a second refrigerator/freezer?

We had a small chest freezer, back when it was just the two of us. We used it for freezing summer bounty (I don't can), and the odd deer or bulk meat. We bought an upright freezer when we moved and had a couple kids. We lived rural--it was common for people (including us) to buy a whole pig or a quarter/half cow. Fast forward, we now live in a city, still have the freezer, and have a spare fridge. We keep them in the garage. The second fridge was the original house fridge, way too small for a family of 6, so we upgraded. We mostly keep drinks in it, extra milk, overflow (i.e., my DH bought a bunch of meat yesterday, for the week--some of it's out back). The freezer has stuff bought on sale, venison, loaves of bread, fruits and vegetables, e...

My husband will be unhappy to hear this. But it does make the Peep so'mores concept more of a reality. :P Try microwaving them. You get "Jabba the Peep". You can also make s'mores with them in the microwave--just watch them, they puff up quickly. Thanks for the tip! How long do you microwave them? I can imagine that Jabba the Peep could be quite the mess! :P 5-10 seconds. Watch them--not only because they puff up very quickly, but also because it's so darn fun! It's especially satisfying with the chick-shaped ones--they look very Jabba-like! I discovered this when my children were younger and they had a lot of fun watching the Peeps puff up in the M/W. No one really liked the taste of Peeps but I carried on buying them for years ...

Re: What inferior good do you love?

Onions are not inferior. From healthline website. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/onion-benefits In economics, "inferior" has nothing to do with the nutrition or health benefits of a product. It has to do with consumer buying habits. What do consumers graduate to (from onions) when they become ballers? Shallots, leeks, pearl onions, cipollini onions, vidalia onions, ... heck, even white onions are more expensive than plain old utilitarian yellow onions. For me, onions are an inferior good because I rarely buy anything other than the cheapest yellow onions. I can't taste the difference between yellow onions and shallots, white onions, and "sweet" onions like vidalia, so why spend more on them? Sometimes I buy leeks ...

Re: College 529 and inheritance

One perspective on this, from the son's viewpoint, sort of: My husband's brother had kids first, by a several-year margin. MIL funded UTMAs for their college (this was before 529s were a thing). Our feelings were that we wanted our nieces to have a college education, and their parents weren't likely to provide one. So, no hurt feelings at all. Fast forward a couple decades--we had 4 kids, BIL/SIL had 3. MIL lived long enough to outright pay college expenses for several grandchildren. When she died, our niece was still in school, and had a larger 529 than the one left to our kids (our oldest had JUST finished college, the 529 hadn't yet been transferred down). This never came up in the estate stuff--again, we wished our niece well, and wante...

Re: College student considering staying in a hotel to save money.

I would go the AirB&B-type route.

A little different, but my husband's job ended, so he was transferred from Vermont (we actually lived in NH) to Plymouth. The job was flexible, so he worked all-out, M-Th, then came home weekends. He asked at work, and found a couple who rented him a room, $100/week, with a private bathroom and kitchen privileges. It worked out well--sometimes, they fed him dinner, other nights, they went out and left their dog in his care. He helped with household chores.

Maybe you could find something similar? An older person with a spare bedroom might be happy to have you there for a few nights a week. Cheaper and homier than a hotel, and you could leave some stuff there.

A few years ago, we did the Tauck Grand European Tour (feel free to google), which covered England, France, and Italy. For our family, France was the least favorite while Italy was the favorite. Our youngest was 12, but there was an 8yo on the trip, and she seemed to have a good time. I'm not suggesting that you take that tour--or any tour, if you just have a few days--but it was very family-friendly.

I also find that you can't go wrong with Rick Steves, in whatever country you choose.

Re: When to take RMD?

Another thought on when to take RMDs--tie it to a memorable (to you) date. Early or late in the year is a personal choice, one hotly debated on Bogleheads. There's no one answer for everyone. My issue with late in the year is the possibility of their being a snafu or heirs not realizing it needs to be taken. There's less recovery time if either happens.

Right now, we only take RMDs from an inherited IRA. We make the withdrawal on DH's father's birthday--in the first quarter, as it happens. We toast the man who made the money and go on with our lives. If you tie your withdrawals to a similar date (anniversary? Veteran's Day?), it will be easier for your heirs to remember the date, and to know if you took them or not.

Our family loves escape rooms! I've done them with different ages and skill levels, if you were. Sometimes, a younger, less-rigid thinker can find a clue while the MSME holder pondered something incessantly (cough, cough, DH). It's more about creative thinking than intelligence, although someone who loves puzzles or codes may have a slight edge. While we've been in rooms where one person attempted to dominate, there are puzzles in parallel, and some things need a group to work on (i.e., one holds something up to a mirror, someone else writes down the answer). I even did one with a group of tweens (birthday party). They needed an adult in the room, but I did virtually nothing while they solved the puzzle in the time allotted. One time, we ha...

Don't be in a rush to give her exact figures--as others have stated, things can change over the next 30 or so years, both for the good and the bad. Long answer: I had a front-row seat to the following saga. My husband has one brother (no sisters). They grew up comfortable, in a very nice area--DH says he felt poor, growing up, but that's really situation bias (i.e., his friends got cars at 16, he had to wait until 21). I can't see how a top loader machine would be a consideration in 2023, it's an odd choice. Some people have experience with both and prefer a top loader. I agree on the top loader preference. Some, however, will lock the top once the load starts, so if that's a big consideration for someone, make sure anything you buy behaves as you prefer. I had a whirlpool HE top loader (bought end of 2010) which locked. The top lifted up about 1/4 to 1/2 inch after it locked, and I could push thinner items in (or smaller items like socks) after the load started. Used an 18" metal ruler to push the item in. Re: Question regarding upgrading to first class on American Airlines

It can be dumb luck. DH was recently in Maui for a month, for work. Three of our kids and I flew out for Thanksgiving week to be with him. An upgrade to first, when available, would have been ~$5k per ticket--kids and I went coach. Even Premium Economy would have been $138 PER LEG. But then, when DH was flying back, they offered to upgrade him to first on his first leg (Maui-Dallas) for $200. He jumped on that with both feet--that was the crucial, overnight portion of his trip.

I think what helped in DH's case was: (a) solo traveler; (b) mid-week flight; and (c) non-holiday travel time.

I've been reading along and learning, as well. I have a question--how do they handle pet messes? I've seen the Youtube video, and it scares me. I have a cat who does the "gulp and hurl", as I call it. For better or worse, the dog typically hears him and comes running to clean it up. (Thanks, I think!). But, there's always residue--I generally use a Swiffer damp mop to get that. Are there any models that handle stairs? How do they do with little bumps, like between rooms (the name is completely escaping me this morning--you know, the piece of wood that goes in the doorway, where two floors connect). Total senior moment for me! (edit) THRESHOLD! The stupid thing is called a threshold! We have kind of a quirky house--2 steps down to ...

Re: Estate Planning: How to leave home and $ to partner, rest to child as inheritance

This is where a good estate attorney can really help out. She'll ask questions your brother never thought of, and listen to his thoughts on what he'd like to do.

FTR, it shouldn't cost more than a a couple thousand to use an estate attorney--ours was a touch more than average because we have a special needs (adult) child. His money is in a trust. In this circumstance, it might cost a few bucks to set up a trust for the daughter, but still--well worth it, for the peace of mind.

FeralCat wrote: Mon Oct 09, 2023 7:38 pm It has been really difficult post-pandemic to find large quantities of fresh basil to make pesto. Most stores now only sell 3 oz packets of basil for around $4.50. I frequently buy produce from the Korean market across the street, so I asked them if I could buy bulk basil. Tonight I picked up a box of 2 pounds of super fresh basil for $20! They sold it to me at this price because I was told I am such a good customer.
So jealous of your "score"!

Basil is really easy to grow--believe me, if I can do it...

I have some I bought as plants and some I grew from seed, out on the back deck. I made pesto last week and froze it in dollops. I might make more this week--I love me some fresh pesto!

I did a stock-up run to Aldi's and got lots of frozen/pantry items (with a little fresh thrown in). Then I used 2 rebate cards from my kids' contact lenses. I paid $25 OOP for my %135 order, and have more than enough to feed my "Gang of 5" for the week.

Re: Vocational colleges for a Mech Eng/Aero Eng major

My apologies if I repeat some things from previous posts... Dh and I both have engineering degrees. He's mechanical, I'm electrical. Be aware that the "tech" degrees (such as electrical engineering technology) are not considered on par with a regular BSEE or whatever. DH has a "regular" BSME, and went on to get his MSME. Meanwhile, his brother flunked out of engineering school (common occurrence), and eventually went on to earn his Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering Technology. But, since the "tech" degree requires way less math, he couldn't get an MSME. He's done fine for himself, but there IS a difference. Meanwhile, our youngest thought he wanted to be a chemical engineer. He took 2 semesters of college c...

Re: Getting the family organized family calendar?

I use a big paper calendar in the kitchen. Everyone has their own highlighter color, everyone can write on it. If it's not on that calendar, it's not happening.

I find that electronic calendars are only as good as the people who use them. Great for some people, to be sure, but our house has trouble inputting events.

Re: Spouse is expecting...and has been offered a big new job

I would NOT mention the pregnancy at this time. It's early yet, and miscarriages happen (here's hoping--not to the OP's wife).

Even if she's not entitled to 12 weeks of paid leave, she's probably entitled to 6 weeks paid, then an additional 6 weeks unpaid. (FMLA provides 12 weeks unpaid, a lot of places offer better than that).

Since the jump in salary is so huge (good for her!), maybe consider saving the difference, to cover her expenses if she has to take unpaid leave. If she ends up getting paid, it's just bonus money, which the baby will vacuum up (kids are expensive).

Best wishes to you both!

Step up from Frigidaire with a Molteni from the same company.

Re: Tell Me About Your Fabulous Stove

The right pans wasn't much of an issue--my best ones still worked! (All-Clad and Cuisinart brands). The pans that didn't work were relegated to the attic and/or passed down to college kids. It could have been an excuse to get more pans, but I really don't need more.

Re: Electric food warmer/lunch box for road trips?

I got one for my BIL, to bring his lunches to work. Keep in mind, they don't heat/cool food, they keep it at temperature once it's already hot or cold. So, you would have to buy, say a refrigerated 6-pack of Sprite or whatever. Not a big deal, just something to keep in mind.

I love my Frigidaire--induction top with a convection oven. However, it's electric--if you want gas, I can't help you.

Good luck in your search--my only recommendation is to try not to cheap out--get what you really want and will use. When we re-did our kitchen a few years back, I had to keep reminding myself not to skimp on myself, since I literally live in my kitchen.

Re: Bogleheads version: Fall Cinnamon Scented Pine Cones etc...

I used to love simmering spices on top of the woodstove. Added bonus, wood heat can be very drying, so adding moisture to the air was helpful.

P.S. Cinnamon sticks and cloves are likely cheaper in a craft store versus a grocery store. I don't know if the dollar store sells them, but they might have a fall potpourri type thing that would smell nice when heated (in a crockpot or old pan, if you don't have a woodstove).

Re: Leaving inheritance to grandchildren-Will you?

My MIL left inheritances to her grandchildren. She divided it "per son" (she had 2), rather than "per grandchild" (she had 7). I understand her reasoning, but I plan to go a different route. Her intent was to pay for college and give the grands a good start in life. When she died, 3 had finished college, 2 were in college, and 2 were younger. With what DH and I inherited, we are continuing to pay for college for our remaining children. Because our kids were well set-up by their grandmother, we're less concerned about leaving them an inheritance ourselves. We'll set up college accounts for grandchildren if/when we get them (no, the cat doesn't count!). If we have an estate when we go, it'll likely go mostly to our 4 kids,...

Re: Crock Pot Corner!

I love, love, LOVE my crockpot! One of my favorite sources for recipes is "Make it Fast, Cook it Slow"-- https://www.ayearofslowcooking.com/2007/12/alphabetical-listing-of-recipes.html I like that she talks about her successes as well as failures. She has several cookbooks (I own two). She also does many things aside from main dishes. I will agree with w PP that meat can get mushy. That's not bad for, say, Salsa Chicken, where you want it shredded. It's terrible for bone-in pork chops. So, I tend to stick with larger cuts of meat--pot roast is fine, it works well with pork loin, etc. I'm more inclined to do spaghetti sauce or chili on the stove--since you need to brown the meat/vegetables, you already have a large, dirty pot, so w...

They definitely re-formatted. To get to the "home" page, you have to click on the big WSJ--it used to be a separate tab. I have the opinion page bookmarked, I typically start there, then go to the home page.
