Re: Do Apple products need Norton anti Virus?
Related but different issue - more and more I've been running into those hidden malware links on regular commercial websites that are embedded within a legit link or picture (I'm sure there's a fancy name for them that I don't know). Any thoughts on how to avoid those or spot them?

Re: Vanguard site is crashed now?
I just laughed out loud at this.
I just sent a few texts to friends and family to remind them not to panic and not to sell.
I'm also locked out of Vanguard btw.

Re: A Year of Extreme Frugality
Mine's imaginatively called "Best Budget," so good luck Googling for reviews. It's not one of the big players, and there may be a reason for that, but it works for me. I prefer running a budget off my phone because I already spend too much time on my computer and in spreadsheets; I have a...

Re: A Year of Extreme Frugality
OP here- some folks have asked why I want to do this. In the next few years, my family and I will either need to sink six figures or more to make necessary repairs / maintenance to our house, or move. I live in an old house in a VERY HCOL area. To pay for the work or the move, we can either finance ...

Re: A Year of Extreme Frugality
Follow a plan: - Keep track of your expenses for a month. - Be precise. if you give $1 cash tip at a bar, note it in your log. - Organize your expenses by categories. - In an alert analytical state of mind review your normal pattern of expenses and decide which ones you want to cut. - Create a stra...

Re: A Year of Extreme Frugality
I still think it's a tough question--a lot of people's "short period of mass saving" is other people's adult life standard. However, the areas I see people have the most frequent ability to cut back easily are food and drink (dinner out, bought lunches, etc.), phone plans, internet/cable,...

OP, Assume you have found the Mr Money Mustache Forum? https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/index.php My experience is that you will find more radical savers and tips there than here. Good Luck, :beer Thanks - I have seen MMM, but I find the forum discussions here to be more engaging. I probably shoul...

A Year of Extreme Frugality
Am thinking about embarking on a year of extreme frugality in order to help save for some big picture expenses coming up. Curious whether anyone here has done the same (for a year or more) and if so: What was your experience? How much did you save? What life hacks did you discover to save money? Any...

Re: What frugal thing did you do today?
Over the last week I have given away several books to my local library and several items around my house to members of my community on my local community sharing page on Facebook. How is this frugal? I may not be saving money, but I am saving someone else money! Also went to Papyrus today where they...

Re: What happens when car accident claim exceeds insurance limits?
Typically, your insurance will not pay any of the $5,000 unless they first secure a release as they cannot pay the amount of the damages in full. The release would protect you. The way I’ve seen this work, it is best if the other person carries collision coverage. Their insurance pays the claim, yo...

Re: Investing in Vanguard through TIAA-CREF
Hello, I'm a newbie in the world of investments. I've had either a 401(k) or a 403(b) (currently) for more than a decade, but never took the trouble to learn about finance. Now I'm learning, and I'm surprised and a bit shocked at some of the things I'm finding out! Right now, I work in higher educa...

You'll want to ask for the declarations page of the restaurant's policy. That will tell you the limits of coverage the restaurant is carrying -- and you will find out if they are underinsured. If you have any concerns about not being fully compensated, consult with an attorney.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: hellstrip- who's responsible for an accident
One thing you haven't mentioned, but should ensure is within your policy, is defense coverage: at least $500K to $1Mil. If you get sued, whether or not you are ultimately held liable for property damage or bodily injury, you want a lawyer to represent you. Normal people cannot afford to litigate civ...

If you are doing a massive purge, before you take a giant load to Goodwill, consider whether the items may be of value to someone within your own community. There are many Buy Nothing Project and community sharing forums on Facebook and/or operated by community listserv - offer it there first, as yo...

A lot of fantastic advice has already been given but I'll add in my two :dollar :dollar 1. Don't buy anything you don't need until you are out of debt. If you really need something, see if you can get it used and/or free. There are many Buy Nothing or community sharing programs throughout the countr...

IRA for children?
Has anyone ever set up an IRA for their children and put in a modest amount so that they can take advantage of the extra 18 or so years of compound interest? Everyone talks about contributing to a 529K, but why not also a tax sheltered retirement account for them? Thoughts?

Re: Mold Discovered in Potential House Purchase
Run. Run away now. Mold can be a very big problem, and it can be very difficult to appreciate the full magnitude of the problem. It also is frequently excluded from insurance coverage, so if you buy that house and later find out that its much worse than originally anticipated you may be left holding...

I got a cold call from Merrill Lynch last night (which is funny, because I'm currently transitioning away from Merrill Lynch -- I guess they don't do any cross referencing before picking up the phone). The kid (who sounded about 25) tried to give me his pitch about why he had "superior knowledg...

In case anyone is interested-- I've decided to keep $10K in straight cash in the .01% checking account simply for the ease of access, and I'm moving the rest into the Vanguard Municipal MMF.

Hi BH, I've been saving for retirement but have committed myself to being more proactive in my personal finance recently. Emergency funds and net worth calcs
Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum but I'm so glad I found it! Does anyone have any advice on where to park your emergency fund? It seems silly to keep $30K in cash in a savings account making .01% interest, but the money market rates don't really seem to be any better. Do we just suck it up and ...
