Personally, my fees have been lower outside 401K's and much more transparent. I think it should be easier to switch money to an IRA. Plus infinity! I've done this twice in the last few years -- both times because I was saving >100bp in fees... ducked punitive 401k fees... never looked back (so far).

I just logged into TreasuryDirect.gov last night to check on my Ibonds -- it's SO NICE to see that portion of my emergency fund earning 4.6%-4.91% while my bonds are at 1.8% and my CDs in the low 2%s...
