Friends inheriting brokerage, traditional IRA

I have friends in their 60's inheriting $400,000 from one of their parents death in a brokerage account and traditional IRA.

What are the main points they should be thinking about and considering? The traditional IRA gets transferred to a inherited IRA? The brokerage account changes name or gets transferred to a new account?

The year of death RMD is one thing, to make sure the RMD is completed

Step up in basis on the accounts is the other thing I can think of

What else am I missing?

Thanks for all your help!

Roth IRA from TRF?

I'm 36 and have over 100,000 in investments and on the path to FI.
My Roth IRA at Vanguard is in the 2050 Target Retirement Fund and I don't really like having the bonds in my portfolio. I was thinking about changing it to VT or having thirds in total stock market or sp500 and international fund and small cap value.
Thoughts?
Thank you

I was furloughed in 2020 and received unemployment. I filed and paid my taxes before it was announced the first $10,200 will not be taxed. It was reported they would automatically refund if you already filed. It has been over a year now, and I still have not received it. What are the next steps I should take?

I have a co worker who turns 60 in April, but is ready to retire. Works for the state and has enough points to retire for the pension. Only thing keeping him is health insurance. Is healthcare.gov the best option for him to examine? Any other thoughts or ideas?

I have an 81 year old friend visiting from Peru who has had vision problems. After an eye doctor visit today, which cost $165, it turns out she has cataracts. Looks like this is a $3,000 procedure, and wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to approach this. Being a non US citizen and no insurance, I do not know if it is best to get it done here in the US or back in Peru? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Health insurance for 64 yr old until Medicare

My mom is retired and will be 64 in January. My dad is still working and already eligible for Medicare, but is thinking about retiring in June. My mom is currently on my dad's health insurance, but if he retires in June, she will need health insurance until she is eligible for Medicare in January 2021. The possible gap will be between June 2020 and January 2021, so about 8 months. What are the best options available for my mom?

Re: VTI to VTSAX in Brokerage Account

Have your cake and eat it, too! Sell $3000 worth of VTI to tax-gain harvest (be sure to use Specific ID for the cost basis method and select the appropriate shares), the buy VTSAX with the money. Set up auto investing and you are on your way. Be sure to set cost basis method for VTSAX also to Specific Identification. If need be, convert some VTSAX to VTI by calling Vanguard. I would not worry about the stupid 30-day frequent policy for VTSAX because it is trivial to get around it. Now if Vanguard wanted to make a killer app, then Vanguard would let people automatically invest a set dollar amount in their ETFs by buying fractional shares at the market opening cross just like they ALREADY DO with automatically reinvested dividends. Basically...

venkman wrote: Mon Jul 01, 2019 11:37 pm Another thing to consider is that it's easier to tax-gain harvest with VTI than with VTSAX. If you sell shares of VTSAX, Vanguard will probably make you wait 30 days to buy more (though you can buy a similar fund like VFIAX right away). If you hold VTI, you can sell it to harvest the gains, then immediately buy it back.
That's a good suggestion, thank you. About how much LTCG should I accumulate before it's worthwhile to tax gain harvest?

VTI to VTSAX in Brokerage Account

I currently have $11,722 in VTI in my Brokerage Account and am thinking about switching to VTSAX for simplicity sake to buy a fixed dollar amount instead of shares. I currently have $328 in short term capital gains and $507 in long term capital gains for a total of $835 gain. I am in the 12% tax bracket and would not have any LTCG, but would have some STCG at 12%.

Is it worth switching this over or should I just continue to add to VTI or put $3,000 into my brokerage account and buy VTSAX and just put all additional contributions into that and leave VTI as it is?

Also, if I sell VTI and buy VTSAX, would I have to wait 30 days to do so?

I know this is a minor problem, but I'm all about simplicity.

Re: Roth 2050 Target Fund to Total Stock

+2 - you picked to invest internationally for a reason - why was that? If that has changed - why did it change? If it is recent performance - that is a bad reason. If it is because you now fully feel (yourself - not experts) that international is not important because it lacks diversification benefits - that is fine. The posters bringing up international bring up valid points. Some of the largest companies in the world are not in the US and we do not know who the winners of tomorrow will be. That is one opinion (one that I happen to share). The other is that the US has the best capital markets, most innovation and best legal system for businesses and thus will always be at the center of global growth with their multinationals - that is anot...

For someone 32 years of age, I suggest at least 15% of your funds into a bond fund for diversification and to cushion your portfolio in case of stock market downturns.

That said, if 100% stocks is indeed your cup of tea, go ahead and exchange into VTSAX.
The Indexed Annuity has made about 3.5% the last couple years, so I consider that portion as a bond as it will vary from 0-3.5% every year
The 2050 Target Retirement Fund has 10% bonds

I also forgot to mention my employer account which has about $16,000 and earns a fixed 4% or can take the pension option which is about $400 per month at this time

So I have a few "bond like" funds

Since the passing of our dear friend Jack this week, I have been thinking about how he did not endorse having international. Being fairly young with a long ways to go, I have also thought about not having bonds in my Roth IRA as well. I have a coworker whom is getting ready to retire and had her retirement meeting last week. She is 65 and did not register for Medicare because she was still working and using the employer's health insurance. She was informed due to this, her HSA would turn into an HRA and Medicare would back date it up 6 months, so you would only have until your retirement date to spend that money. I have not heard about this before and would like to know if this is correct. Thanks

I help out a gentleman whom is in a retirement facility and he recently moved to a different room. He moved to this facility in 2013 and purchased a Whirlpool Duet stackable washer and dryer. He no longer needs it in his new room and I do not have washer and dryer hookups in my apartment, so I currently have no use for it either. It is currently sitting in a friends garage, so am thinking about just selling them. They are very nice and in excellent shape. Probably only used once per week. I received my HSA money in the TD Ameritrade account today and decided to put all $6,100 of it into SPTM. I added up all of my retirement funds (except for my current employer pension) and if I consider the Annuity Roth IRA as a bond, I currently hold a 61% stock / 39% bond mix. As I add to my HSA and Brokerage accounts of 100% stock, this number will rise. Also when I add more to my Roth IRA 2050 Target Retirement Fund (but that won't be until 2019 as I already put in the $5,500 for 2018). So I am far off of my 90/10 target. Only way to achieve that is to get rid of the Annuity. From April 2016 to April 2017 it earned 3.52%. Since SPTM is commission-free at TD Ameritrade, I'd use that as my core fund, possibly my only fund in that account. And the differences are insignificant for buy and hold investors.) Re: How to Invest my HSA - Lively

I’m assuming you’re young based on the target date. Doesn’t seem like an annuity would make sense now if retirement is so far off. I’d look at that. Can you reallocate that? You need to determine how risky you want to be. You have some bonds in the target fund. Probably 10-20% of that. So overall you have very little bond exposure. You could split the money into total stock market and a bond fund based on your risk. You’d save a few basis points in fees rather than going with the allocation fund. You are very exposed to market risk right now. That’s fine but you might also want to consider getting exposure to other types of risk: value, momentum, etc. I recommend doing some reading before going that route though. I am 31 years old, and yes...
