Re: U.S. stocks in free fall
There are people who keep track of their networth every year, they would notice a loss. But if I put the value of my purchase price of my house, I would be sad, it’s a very small amount. So I suggest getting real, if you have money in the stock market, you will suffer volatility, you will suffer temporary loss, nevertheless it’s a loss.

Haha, reduction in value meets loss(kettle meets pot kind of thing). Fancy way of saying to reduce hurt feelings. I say a loss is a loss and get over it.

Yes, and I’m working to arrange my finance to make it even safer. I have not withdrawn any money yet. That money is possibly for very long LTC, that’s the only unknown so far.

I’m surprised that Escondido is that expensive, I looked at Redfin and the prices are way below the listed price above. Granted this is a brand new home but still. It’s priced way above the local market.

My kid thought an MBA at a decent top 15 schools is a step down, I have offered to pay for 2 years MBA at such institution, but she turned me down. She maybe right, her friend is doing an MBA at top 15 and is thinking of quitting. She was a math major for undergraduate.

Re: Careers in art
I didn’t know creative types often have ADD. I have ADD, but not sure I’m truly creative. I do like to do arts as a hobby. I don’t think I would earn anything as an artist. I’m too impatient. Get frustrated easily. But I have one kid who is in the creative field, let’s say she’s not super successful, not yet, but maybe if she keeps at it, she might be. She has the personality, pretty determined about her art. Her business partner’s spouse has degree in animation, decent artist, was laid off for a few months now. I did their tax for one year and she was making less than $40k a year. Graduated from UCLA/USC type of school for about 6 years. But to be really fair about this whole artist thing, both kids, mine and her friend, came from well to ...

I never worried about not having enough because my family survived in the Bay Area on $25k(2003) plus mortgage payment. Nobody noticed any problem. Even today my kids told us they were not aware of it. We vacationed, the kids had dance and music lessons. We ate well. We paid for our own health insurance even. Once you have a control of your expense, you can retire.
I could retire 20 minutes from where I am with 20% less in housing. So there’s a lot of slacks to manage.

My kid did a summer study abroad(the summer after freshman year) in Paris for language and in London at a Kings college(I believe) something to do with spy and encryption. When she was in Paris during Tour de France, she travelled around France to see follow them in real life. She’s now more knowledgeable about Paris then I am. In London, she used the bus to get around between studies, that’s if she did any. Wonderful experience if you can’t do the whole year or the whole semester abroad because of your study program. She was in Computer Science/engineering, she couldn’t afford to miss one semester, plus the years after sophomore year are for internships. After college, she also delayed starting her job for 3 months so she could backpack in...

In Germany, you'll need cash outside of really nice restaurants and hotels. Since I tend not to eat at very nice restaurants, I need lots of cash. I have used my Fidelity CMA card to get cash overseas dozens of times. They did shut off my card twice. So: 1) make sure you call to set a travel notification. Unfortunately there is no way to do this online, in spite of me making fun of them for it each time I call. 2) bring at least one backup ATM card ATM card as in Debit Card? Not all ATM cards are debit cards. Debit usually refers to the ability to use the Visa/Mastercard network for purchases and debit card cash advances. Thanks. I would do it in my 30s, 40s, or even 50s, but I definitely won’t do it after age 60. But I know my siblings are working in their early 60s to help their kids. Their kids are not self sufficient yet, still a drain to their savings if they don’t work. Healthcare is not a problem. Plus the young wife is too young to retire, she has strong work ethics, only 53, he is 60.

To be clear the BA companion cert can be used to go other places than London (I used one to go to Amman a few years ago) but it does require you fly on BA metal from the US which means effectively you have to fly to/through London. The Virgin companion certificate would have the same limitation more or less. While I didn't see a limit that you had to use it from the US you do have to fly on Virgin metal and as far as I know all VS flights either fly from or to London so effectively the same deal except worse because VS flies far fewer places than BA. I'd also like to point out that there are non-Ivy, private schools that cost just as much as an Ivy, and can be just as strict about only providing "need based" aid. It's not just the top ten schools either. So I think planning for the most expensive private colleges, if you can, and within the parameters of being a responsible, frugal, forward looking parent who is not depriving the kids of experiences in childhood as a result , will allow you the most flexibility later on. And even "close enough" gives you options. Please note: although we are pretty good super-savers and planners, we will have "full pay public school" money in the 529s, not "full pay private" money. So our kids will be faced with ...
