I haven’t seen jigsaw puzzles mentioned yet. My sister got me hooked on these. I do the 1000 piece puzzles. I also listen to podcasts while doing them. It’s just so relaxing and enjoyable!

Thank you all! We agree about needing to buy a home in cash/unable to obtain a mortgage upon our return and would likely rent for 6-12 months in the area we were considering buying in before buying that return US home and would likely get jobs during that time period for the purpose of securing a mortgage, replenishing past spent monies, regaining traditional health INS and filling up the time in our days during that time.
Best of luck.

Re: Culvert & Driveway install quote
I design culverts for a living and can give you an accurate estimate based on prices here in Minnesota. I'm assuming the culvert is concrete. Assuming everything is included in your quantities you listed, this is what I'd quote it at: Assume $140 per linear foot for the culvert $1500 per culvert apron or flared end section $25 per cubic yard of select fill something like $30-40 per ton for crushed concrete Based on this, I'd estimate it at around $8,000. You could save about $1,000 if you went with an 18" diameter culvert instead of a 24", but I'm not sure how much water is coming through the culvert. The quote seems fair to me, given a few unknowns. The labor also seems fair, assuming 2 guys doing the work for two days. Thanks f...

Quote: Two 24” concrete SET ends and One 20’ x 24” culvert, 70 yards select fill, 20 tons crushed concrete.
Install SETs, culvert, backfill and grade for culvert installation with above existing material. Driveway to be 12 ft.
And yes, I’m planning on 2 more quotes.

Culvert & Driveway install quote
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has insight on having a culvert/driveway installed on a Farm to Market road outside city limits. I just received a permit through TXDOT and I have one firm quote of just over $10,000. Of that is $3,770 for the labor portion. Is that a reasonable quote? I’m guessing that there are some variables as to location and what not. I’m just trying to get a general sense of pricing.
Thanks,
Texgal17

I also had no issue and all I took was the death certificate so I could forward moms mail to my home for a few months to get any last minute bills, etc. Then eventually I filled out another forwarding order from my home to “DECEASED “ so that I wouldn’t get any more of her mostly junk Mail.

I was not appointed executor nor was my Moms estate probated. We did a small estate affidavit. I did her final tax refund and sent in the 1310. The check was made out to me and it was deposited into the joint account she had with my sibling. After all her debts and accounts were paid off, the remainder in the bank account was split evenly with her heirs, which wasn’t much. Hope this helps.

When my daughter worked at a competitor pharmacy chain she started out on the retail side. She was interested in the pharmacy tech side so she moved in there. Well, she hated it because they were super busy and had no time to actually train her and she didn’t know what she was doing while working there. She quit shortly thereafter. So I’d think twice about the CVS job.

Yes, letter carriers can bid on open routes and it is by seniority. I am a retired postal worker who worked with carriers at a station.Broken Man 1999 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 11:05 amVery true. Our mail service is excellent.homebuyer6426 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 8:07 am <snip>
This stuff is highly location dependent, some branches do an excellent job and others are abysmal. It can also depend on the time of year, sometimes they have tons of temps. I avoid USPS for highly important stuff now.
I wonder if the carriers "bid" on routes and are awarded them via seniority? I know the job is union, but not sure how routes are assigned to the carriers.
Whatever the reason, we see the same faces for years.

Hello, I sold my home in early 2021 for $195000 which was great for me. Fast forward to last week and the buyer put it on the market for $285000. Which is absolutely ridiculous for that home. They had tried to rent it prior to listing but I guess no takers. I don’t think they will get any takers for that sale price, either….Location is central TX.

Re: Any feds with specialty RX need? Which FEHB plan did you choose?
I am currently taking 3 specialty meds on my FEHB, and have been for about 14 years at this point. The past 6 years I've been with NALC, who uses CVS as their specialty pharmacy. A 30 day supply is $200, and a 90 day supply is $400. Only one of the drugs I'm on will allow a doctor to write the script for 90 days. There is a total out of pocket expense of $3100 for medications. I receive co-pay assistence from one of the manufacturer's, and that does not count towards my out of pocket max. The co-pay assistance will end when the generic of the drug comes out in early 2024 and I will be back to paying the $200/month for it. Fortunately, the med I'm currently pay $400/3 months is now offered by Mark Cuban's pharmacy for about $45 a month, so ...

I had to call the Thriftline today, on hold for just over an hour. I had not received my monthly disbursement that is normally sent on the 4th of every month. I was told any monthly payments will now be sent on the 15th of the month. I don’t remember reading about this prior to the switch. I had no issues setting up my login account, so that was a plus. I agree with others on disliking this new interface. Oh well, I’ll guess I’ll get used to it.

Be very interested to see if anything gets picked up! (I am always astonished at how much my short-haired cat can shed in a few days! But the mattress vacuum would have to rival that kind of "production" to get me to do it more than once about every 20 years ... :P !) Yes! I sold my 1600sf 3/2 home last March ( for a nice profit). After my daughter and grandchild moved out I felt like it was way too big for just me.
So now I’ll be looking for a smaller (1000sf or less) older home with some character minus the usual subdivision with HOA characteristics.
Hopefully this will be my last home purchase as I’m looking for my forever home this time.

Especially think about a typical Boglehead: they're chasing three simultaneous account opening bonuses, dividing their purchases among eight different credit cards to optimize rewards and match the quarterly-bonus-category-of-the-day, and have seventeen different frequent-traveler programs - all with different expiration policies and allowances (or not) for transferring balances on death. I was actually thinking about the credit card scenario being a headache as there was a recent thread on someone planning to simplify their credit cards. Maybe I'm not a typical Boglehead, but I no longer chase rewards as I like to keep my finances as simple as possible. So I just have 1 credit card - paid off monthly (shared with my spouse) and one checki...

I can see a priority envelope being squished in there, a box, no. My dad has asked over and over. No luck... It was a priority cardboard envelop. Not bendy enough to put in their small po box. I have used a “Mr. Handyman” service. It’s a franchise. They have a certain dollar amount to come out and then the cost of service needed. First job I had done was installing kitchen cabinet knobs, that I purchased. Took about an hour.
Second job I had a under mount sink fall through. There were no braces to hold it up so the handyman installed brackets.
He did have to go to Home Depot for some parts, but it was included in the service visit. Both jobs were reasonably priced IMO.
I also went to Home Depot to pick out a screen door for my back door. The laborer came out to do measurements for $50.00 but that was taken off the end price once installed. He brought the door and all knobs with him on install date.

Totally agree! My siblings and I had to deal with getting rid of 30+ years of stuff from my deceased moms home. Even after having an estate sale, there was tons of stuff leftover. Eventually we had to pay someone to take it all away. Most of it just worthless junk, but my mom liked her things....So now, I have been decluttering my own possessions to prevent my kid from having to go through it. I’ve never really had problems with getting rid of stuff though, so it’s not too hard for me to do.

Re: Examples of Low Tech Improving Your Life
I only wash dishes by hand as I dislike dishwashers.
A spiral notepad for budgeting bills.
I have several kindles but prefer real books.
I get all my news on my iPad, but I sure do miss reading actual newspapers.
Not sure how this improves my life, though....lol

Re: What are you doing differently this year?
I recently added up my monthly grocery spending and I was surprised to see how much I was spending. So my goal is to stop stockpiling food and use up what I have already. And that led me to start asking myself about other purchases, “need or want?” ...and start saving even more money.

Re: Help not being a Scrooge with presents
I have told my sister in the past to please not buy me anything whether it’s birthday or Christmas. I would rather have an experience, such as going to a restaurant or somewhere else for an outing..... Well this Christmas she did not BUY anything but she made some silly homemade crafty gifts! Which I’ll probably get rid of at some point.... We have discussed this before and she admitted it was all about her! That she gets joy from giving. No stopping her I guess, lol

It takes time for others to refresh their own copies of this data. 6 months later, Apple Maps only works if you give it the wrong address. Lookup tool to find your local AMS office: https://postalpro.usps.com/ppro-tools/address-management-system OP, contacting the AMS office is what you need to do. Consider the PO Box advice in the meantime. Also ensure that your local government has their official map data updated. They control the street num...

Re: What are you giving (or asking) for Christmas?
I’m only giving gifts to my only 30 yr. old child and her fiancé and my only 11 yr. old grandchild this year.
For my daughter and fiancé a Lowe’s gift card for helping with house fixes....
My granddaughter loves Starbucks and Five Below discount store, so gift cards for her.....
I no longer buy her toys as she’s out grown them. I did start funding an education account for her.
Asking for myself, my favorite Lindt chocolates....And I bought myself some really nice, expensive bed sheets!
