Re: Why am I even holding BND? It has only been losing me money.

Any thoughts on buying other fund(s) with a half the duration with similar composition?

I need to hold on for about 3 years and cannot afford to wait the 6 years.

Re: Make me feel good about my bond allocation

Yes, sinking NAV is not fun to watch. Another possibility is to put some BND targeted funds into CDs. This has been covered in the past.. https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=153309 BND SEC Yield is 2.63% right now. 5 year CDs are yield in the same zone. https://www.depositaccounts.com/c...

Re: How secure are Wi-Fi cameras?

I would not suggest doing this. You should have the FiOS router set in bridge mode. If you don't, you will run into an issue of double NAT: https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT This is all going way over my head but I was going to edit my post to say FIOS modem, not FIOS router, if that ...

Re: Help with Fixed income Asset Allocation

I may be misunderstanding, but there is no way I'd put that allocation into a taxable account with your tax rates. I'd put it all in VWIUX/VCADX. And not a very high percentage in VCADX to reduce CA-specific risk. Do you not have ANY equities in tax-deferred? If you have any tax-efficient equity fu...

Help with Fixed income Asset Allocation

I have questions about my Fixed income allocation. 2016 Top tax rate in US, Very high rated in CA 39.6% - 11.3% Goals: Beat inflation Minimize tax hit Diversification Safety Not trying to time market Notes: BND 2.56% yield 6 yr duration - 1.36% after taxes VWIUX 2.15% yield 5 yr duration (Tax Equiv ...

Re: Fee-only financial advisor/planner

Anyone found a good fee-only advisor in the San Francisco area?

I tried a couple on the Napfa and Garrett lists and they were more focused on younger clients without substantial assets already built up. Alan Roth does not return emails, so I assume he doesn't need more business.

PM me.

Re: Help finding the best bond strategy?

Over the last 3 months BND is -4.5%.

Does it make sense to go with the shorter duration BSV that has lost less? (-1.9%)

Duration 5.9 years vs 2.8 years

FYI Schwab and Fidelity have Verisign tokens ala Paypal. You need to ask your rep for them. While you are at beefing up security.., Gmail has multifactor authentication with their iphone, blackberry, android app. What I'd really like for them to implement is two factor authentication. For example, l...

Fixed Income Asset Allocation - Munis, Total Bond, etc

Wondering what your suggestions are for fixed income asset allocation. Mid 40's. and in highest tax bracket in CA. I do not need this money anytime soon. 55% Intermediate term Muni, 30% total bond index, 5% high yield, 5% world bond, 5% tips. Munis would be 60% CA, 40% national. I want to diversify ...

Going down

VCAIX peaked at 11.05 on Oct 5, 2009 but has been falling recently. I see other muni funds going the same way. Any comments? :?:

A question more on the lines of how VCAIX performs vs peers. Looking around FCSTX seems to have done better with less volatility over the last 2 years. (VCAIX is still negative, FCSTX up almost 5%)

On the Van CA MM fund.. It yields 0.48%, not very high. 0.82% tax equiv for those in highest bracket.

Van prime yields about 1.5% right now. Decision on where to move doesn't look very tough?!

I agree with the diversification. One note on this fund. I used to be in VCAIX and sold late last year. I had noticed some substandard performance. Anyone seen alternatives in the CA Intermediate term muni area that I could switch too? FCSTX isn't a vanguard fund, but see how it has done compare to ...
