Re: How to secure your website?

Depending on your situation, my suggestion is to use a static website. Static websites will fill most use cases and are more secure than a dynamic website. Using a static website eliminates a lot of security vulnerabilities. Here's some more information: https://wsvincent.com/static-vs-dynamic-webs...

Re: How to secure your website?

With all the hacks of websites lately, I'm wondering if there are suggestions on how to secure a website? I'm not speaking about the complexity of Citibank or Equifax. I have started doing research on ways to reduce the chances of being hack, and I'm hoping that the tech savvy bogleheaders can chim...

Re: Are stocks going up only because all the alternatives are lousy?

We keep hearing the warnings about high stock valuations and possibility of market losses, poor returns, etc. I believe it, but every time I think about what to do about it, all the other choices stink, so I stay in stocks. And they keep going up for no good reason that I can discern. Cash? no retu...

Re: Which is better a Cryptocurrency or Gold?

There are some people who price cryptocurrencies on the theory they are the new Gold. A currency that is easily translated into other currencies in case of a crisis. Essentially a universal hedge against a crisis in your local currency that is easily transported across borders. So if you were going...

Re: Bitcoin is dropping right now after a big Chinese exchange announces closure

Bitcoin is just the first iteration of a currency based on the blockchain. I think it's been a grand experiment, but it will eventually end. However, I think the idea of a currency based on the blockchain is timeless and will continue to gain traction, as evidenced by the plethora of other cryptocu...

https://qz.com/730004/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-ethereum-hard-fork/ I think that article does a good job of explaining the situation around the DAO hack. Essentially, the core developers of Ethereum pressed the reset button by creating a new version of Ethereum or to be more precise a br...

Re: What is the main purpose of holding your current job?

2. I do my job to make a living, no more no less

I am a programmer, and I love to code. However, my job involves a lot more than just coding, and those are the parts that I don't care to do. If I could spend the majority of my time coding, then I'd choose option 1.

Re: How far would you travel to see The Eclipse?

I thought about traveling to see the totality, and I'd be willing to drive for about a day or fly to see it. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Thankfully, on April 8, 2024 another totality will come across Texas. I plan to travel to Austin to see it. Really looking forward to it. I might have trave...

https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin-cash/#markets There are much bigger ones but I use Kraken since it is San Francisco based and the founders have strong ties to America so I believe they will not flee with the money. Second this. Kraken has relatively low fees and is generally stable. Ho...

Re: Lastpass anyone use it?

I used to use LastPass, but I recently switched to 1Password. One of my motivations was LogMeIn owning LastPass https://www.troyhunt.com/logmein-now-owns-lastpass-heres-how-to/ Overall, I've been happy with the switch, and from my understanding, 1Password has a better security track record than most...

Re: Bitcoin

I like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the other cryptocurrencies. I especially like the underlying technology (the blockchain), and I think the blockchain will be big in the future. I think of buying cryptocurrencies as speculating. From my experience, people who buy cryptocurrency expect to sell it at a hi...

I've been a LastPass premium customer for a few years, but I've been considering switching to 1Password since the LogMeIn acquisition. From what I've read about LogMeIn, they don't have the best reputation (https://www.troyhunt.com/logmein-now-owns-lastpass-heres-how-to/). I think this change is a g...

Re: android auto or carplay?

Waze is now on Android Auto. That puts it ahead of carplay in my book. https://www.theverge.com/2017/7/26/16028250/waze-android-auto-maps-navigation-carplay I second this. Google maps already made Android auto better than Apple carplay, but now that Waze is available for Android auto, I think it's ...

Re: SNAP News - S&P 500 Index vs Total Stock Market Index

I don't think it will impact the debate that much. I personally like the move by S&P, and I think this is a great market reaction to companies not having voting stock. I own SP500 and Total Market funds, and I don't plan to change how I invest based on this news.

Re: What to do with 3oz of gold?

I'd recommend selling it. I held gold for a while and lost money. I sold mine to APMEX.com. The process was pretty straightforward and their support is helpful. If not them, I'd sell to some place local that will come close to spot price.

I'm a fan of capital one. Their website and phone app are nice, and any time that I've talked to their support, they've been helpful. I have the venture card and the rewards are nice since I like to travel. I haven't really ever felt the need to churn.

My emergency fund is just cash in a savings account right now. I like to include it in my AA. It helps me see much of my net worth is in cash and let's me know if I'm sitting on too much cash.

Re: Would you let your teenager spend all his savings on a gaming computer?

My son, a rising high school junior, has saved $1500 through summer jobs, chores, gifts, etc. He now wants to spend almost all of it on a gaming computer that he plans to build this summer. I don't have a teenager and I'm not a parent. I'm definitely not qualified to give parenting advice. However,...
