Re: Can we talk about the future of oil?
solar on every house rooftop, improved battery storage or pumping of water uphill with excess power, and natural gas peaker plants + hydro for sun don't shine and wind don't blow. This the way. I agree with that....the simple cycle gas plants will be needed at night and higher demand days. Once the...

Re: Can we talk about the future of oil?
Cutting down several hundred acres of land to put up solar panels is destroying it in my mind. Areas without crops or trees like the desert I can see Solar going up there. Around here....they cut down trees. I have 2 within 10 miles of my house that took up 1,500-1,700 acres of farms and timberland ...

Re: Can we talk about the future of oil?
Perhaps oil itself will see a very slight decline, but fossil fuels will not. Where do you think EV charging energy comes from? I guess the answer depends where you live, but it's likely either coal or natural gas. There is hydro, PV and wind, which are a small part, but burning dinosaurs will stil...

You have all these countries in the world with hardly any regulations about what they omit to the atmosphere and people having to wear masks in the streets in some of those places the pollution is so bad, but a few Tesla's will make all the difference..

After reading thru these posts I have come to the conclusion that I need to save more...
Probably wrong but I haven't tracked my net worth just my 401k for the last few years. Really didnt start saving alot (besides my 401k) until about 5yrs ago. I have a taxable account and a Roth IRA now though.

I've thought about buying a rental, but in my area rent is low and I havent found a property at a good deal.
If I can only rent out a house for $600-800 a month its not worth the hassle by the time I add taxes, insurance and maintenance.

Don't move! You won't like it. It's a horrible place. We, native Tar Heels, are all a bunch of backwoods hillbillies and will frustrate you in every endeavor. We can't drive. We talk too slow. We think the apocalypse is upon us when it threatens snow. The weather is unbearable and you can rarely en...

Re: Do you Casino? What do you play? Have you won?
There are two reasons to step foot in a casino: 1) You're paying for the entertainment value. You are aware of the odds and the likelihood that you lose your bankroll, but it's worth it to you for the fun you have. And, losing your bankroll doesn't impact your financial picture. 2) You have an adva...

We went with a tankless and wish I had earlier. If I remember right mine was $2k installed.
Install isn't hard though it uses a different regulator than other gas appliances so it will need it's own individual line or tie in upstream of the other appliances.

Simply Southern Smokehouse was just ok for me. Not bad at all but not as good as I was expecting. Carolina Roadhouse was pretty good....need to make a reservation there if you can. We always hit one of the big buffett joints when were there, normally Benjamins Original Calabash. It's expensive but h...

Re: What is your one favorite Fidelity Fund??
Fidelity Contra Fund. It has been one of my largest holdings for 25 years. I have sold off everything else and moved into index ETFs but my capital gain in Fido kills me every time I sell some. Last time I sold some I had to pay AMT and that 2.x% medicare tax. Contra is one of the only mutual funds...

Re: Water leak when it rains - older Camry
Another thought: Do you have a sunroof? They've engineered sunroofs such that when they leak, the water drains out through tubes to the underside of the car rather than into the car. Sometimes those drain tubes get clogged, and the water ends up in unexpected places. Willing to bet thats your probl...

CD question
I was looking at cd rates and had a question. If the interest rate is 1.75% for a 3 month cd and 2.2% for a 1yr cd wouldn't you be better off investing in the 3 month cd and just keep rolling it over every 4 months? I have never bought a cd so there has to be some kind of catch that I dont know about.

Re: Water Heater Install $1,800!
Its been a few years since I replaced our hot water heater but I want to say I paid about $400 and then like $50 for new fittings.
I am by no means a real mechanical guy but installing a new hot water heater is about as simple as it gets.

Taxable account
Forgive me in advance for my ignorance... :happy #1. If I open a taxable account and then decide to pull my intial ammount out do I have to pay any penalty or tax? When I started my 401k at work I chose that fund and after awhile I stopped putting money in it and switched over to a index fund, but I still have about 160 shares that I just let ride.
It has done well that last few years, but so has just about everything else..

I only know a handful of people that are retired right now and NONE of them have a million bucks and are living just fine. Roth 401k
I have the option of investing in a Roth 401k at work, would it benefit me to switch over to that instead of my traditional 401k? (I know the money is tax free after 59.5 and 5yrs in). I could see where it would be great if I were in my 20's but I'm 42. I have nothing to write off on my income taxes...

Yes, I think it's best to completely get out of your current 3 funds and move everything into the index equity and bond fund. A 70/30 allocation sounds reasonable for your age. Is there a particular age you're hoping to retire by? Hopefully by 62. I should have mentioned it in my 1st post that than...
