Re: Amazon "eligible for return" cost
I looked for a similar thread w/o finding one. DW ordered a Travelon Expansion Crossbody Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MYTDJZV?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details She changed her mind after it arrived (free shipping), started a return and tried to return at Whole Foods. That was rejected. It was an "eligible for return item". She had to box it, print USPS labels for postage and battery (didn't even know it had one) and drive it to the USPS. Biggest surprise $18.05 postage to return a $48.47 purchase. Promised a credit when Amazon receives it. PSA: pay attention to what it says in the listing re seller, returns, etc. Yes, sold by Amazon, ships from Amazon. You may have to handle and pay dearly for a return. Added: Yes,...

Re: how to open paper milk carton "cleanly"?
The old style paper cartons are far less wasteful than the new style with the plastic cap insert. The only real advantage of the plastic cap is the re-seal it provides; but a properly opened all paper carton can be sealed well enough and as well with a clothes pin. I can imagine packing the old style cartons might a somewhat lost art, struggling with old equipment and modern glue. That would be interesting to look into. I used to enjoy opening the old milk cartons. Trading a nickel for a half pint was a source of pride. It was a bit of a challenge to open them perfectly. The trick was at the start with the thumbs, making sure the sides of the spout were folded all the way back as far as they could go. And then making sure the point of the s...

Re: unmarried with joint mortgage, can 1 deduct all interest?
You each split the mortgage interest at the same proportion you paid it. If you each paid 50/50, then split the interest 50/50 and both enter the 1098 with the interest divided by 2. Don’t take my word on it, there’s plenty of documentation to be found. Start out by web searching something like “joint mortgage.”
You don’t have to give an explanation on your tax return, since tax software doesn’t have a method for that unless you mail in the return; but be prepared incase the IRS asks.

Re: Dilemma of sorts…[asset allocation to reduce RMDs]
There has been a lot of talk about this tactic lately, I think because of the recent market conditions with bonds and stocks moving together counter to historical norms. As you know expected returns and market returns are two different things. Several years of bonds outperforming stocks is not a far fetched idea.IggyJo wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2024 5:05 am I am 82. My RMDs are increasing. I did not convert money from the Traditional IRA to the Roth. I am using the three Fund method now. I am thinking of putting all the Bond allotment in the Traditional IRA. Because the interest rate is lower it would grow at a slower rate. This would lower the RMD amount. I would put all the stock amount in the Roth IRA where it will grow at a higher interest rate. Your thoughts on this?

You might want to mention the area or at least the state. If you are in FL or CA it is quite a bit more difficult. Northwest. Not California or Florida. Best insurance in the PNW is PEMCO Pemco used to be rated A+ by Bests, but various issues over the past 20 years haven't treated it kindly. Pemco is now rated B++, and the opinion has reduced their view from Positive, to Stable. In the modern world of large and frequent catastrophes, I would not want a company rated at less than A. As a mutual company owned by its policy holders it does not have the financing opportunities available to stock companies. The rating below is the latest from 2023. https://news.ambest.com/newscontent.aspx?AltSrc=104&RefNum=247646 Why belabor a biased slant ...

You should consider your estimated future tax brackets.
Low future tax bracket - Traditional, defer taxes.
High future tax bracket - Roth, pay taxes now.
Some of each when you contribute enough to Traditional to lower your tax bracket enough to make further contributions into the Roth worth it.
There are spreadsheets in the wiki that assist with guestimating.

I should probably add that I'm obviously looking at index funds. So the ETFs and MFs should have close to equally low costs. For all practical purposes an ETF and MF as share classes of the same asset will have equally low costs. To your original question: ETFs are day traded like stocks, while MFs are traded once a day for the closing net asset value (NAV). Trading ETFs is constrained to open market hours, while MF orders can be made any time. There are exceptions, for example a stop limit order good for a predetermined time period can be made for an ETF. Trading ETFs can be very stressful and time consuming when attempting to get the best price . MF NAVs can be estimated by watching a corresponding ETF. MF dividend reinvesting is straigh...

Really almost any productive business should stand up to inflation, otherwise how could it be considered productive? Every industry is going to have its pluses and minuses, falling behind and catching up within different cycles and conditions. That’s why the best “basket of stocks” to protect against inflation is the whole market.
