Re: Dress Shirts
With your rotation of 15 shirts you are doing well to keep them for 5 years or so before retiring them. As others have noted with BB and some other higher end companies, these are best bought in store as their outlets normally utilize more inexpensive materials that do not last as long. Paul Fredrick shirts look great in their catalogs, but are some are not of the quality of others. For me it always akin to a roll of the dice with them, if I really liked the look then I would snag it and hoped for the best.
With BB, Paul Frederick. Dillard's Gold Label I always kept a healthy rotation and supplemented them frequently. Sometimes too frequently.

Social Security is a stream of money used to supplement the income needed for your retirement. This stream should be a relatively constant during those years. As such this means you can tap less of your portfolio to meet your financial needs during retirement.

Re: How to visit all the US national parks
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. It is the same thing with visiting America's greatest gems. Each park, scenic area, historical site, lakeshore or monument has its own unique appeal, awe factor and raison d' etre. Each will surprise you at some level if given the chance. Each will clamor for more of your time if you allow them. Each will tug at your heartstrings to come back or never leave like the Sirens did to Ulysses. I could go on about these trips, but this is about you trips, you dreams. So let us start with a little preparation here. When you say that you want to see the "famous parks" do you mean some type of bucket list parks. There is nothing wrong with this concept though please remember that for many of ...

While I still go to a physical store. I have changed my habits in doing so. Last month I bulked up on canned products so when it turns nastier, the need to go will be minimized. For my next time I will definitely take more precautions and will scout out the local stores to see which one has the fewest customers.

Re: How is this pandemic different than 2008?
1. 2008 was purely a financial crisis in which the Fed stepped in and laws were passed to prevent this from occurring again. As others have now said, "The Fed cannot print a vaccine."
2. 2020 is a health crisis making it more personal. This crisis is also slowing down and disrupting the flow of the world economy.
3. We know how the crisis of 2008 ended. None of us know how this will end, whether it will be a ripple in the water or a tsunami that engulfs.
Uncertainty always casts an ominous shadow. In 2008 we didn't know if the financial system would collapse. A this stage in 2020 we don't know if the health system will be up to the task. Uncertainty.

Re: New retiree perspective during Corona Crash
I retired this past August and have a 40/60 AA. Fortunately my SS + Pension provides more than enough for my living expenses. Initially I was planning to take a portion of my SS and start a taxable account, but inertial set in as I began working on my house. In this case inertial was good. I now will take that money to for a new roof and correct some foundation issues. Hopefully will be able to start funding that account before the summer. In the meantime with foreign travel kind of on the back burner for awhile, it looks as if this will be a good year for camping and baseball games. Regarding what we are experiencing currently in the market, do I like it? No. Is there anything I can do about it? Only rebalance when I hit my bands. Meanwhil...

Re: 1 week camping tour, Phoenix-El Paso, suggestions?
Okay this will be excellent trip this time of year. I have done several camping trips from Houston to Phoenix and that are a lot of nice places to camp, but first a little research on your part is necessary. Have you driven with a camper before? I ask this because a the trip will take a little longer pulling that rig and also it might limit you in certain areas of some parks. You will need to get a good map and get on the National Parks website (nps.gov) to spot out best accommodations. You said that you are taking a week off and will be going to Big Bend so this probably means that you are planning about 6-7 days there and the balance driving. You will need to factor in your drive times with the fact that most parks are not set up after 6 ...

Re: Kayaking & Fisherman - What is proper etiquette?
I'm a lake kayak fisherman too, and in my experience, using a kayak is one of the least obtrusive methods of fishing that exists. No noise and a small wake. If the shore fisherman expected open water for 75' (1/2 the width of the cove) that was unreasonable. Unless he was top water fishing why would it matter anyway? If his pole was propped up on the rocks he was either bottom fishing or using a bobber. If you didn't see a bobber I would just bet he was venting his frustration at an empty stringer. I try to stay as far away from other fishermen as possible, but have had instances where powered boats came too close, and have had other fishermen cast toward my kayak in some kind of statement I suppose, although I was doing nothing wrong. I u...

Re: Lump sum vs Pension
Here is the good news! At 41 you are not waiting until retirement is knocking at your door. Many things can and will happen in the intervening years. A pension with SS will go a long way toward mitigating any issue associated with risks on sequence of returns. It is a return that keeps on giving therefore increasing your diversification. An item that is worth considering though is the strength and stability of the institution providing your pension. For this you will need to do your due diligence. Also understand your options if you have to change careers. Hopefully you are, or will be, fully vested if this should occur. For those who have taken a lump sum in the last 10 years and fully reinvested it into the market they have done quite wel...

If you are close to an AE store go there and look at the styles and see which ones that you like. Try them on at the store. Because of their use of differing "last" welt construction, some feel better on your feet than others. Now having properly researched the item follow the advice of others and look at heir "seconds" on their website. You will directed to their shoe bank to see if it is available. If not try to hold off until their next sale. As per your criteria of leather shoe with a goodyear welt, the $200 price might be somewhat limiting in today's market. Btw when you get on their site do not immediately look at the Strands or Parks as you will see these shoes are definitely out of the range you described. Rememb...

I was the beneficiary of my deceased aunts $100,000 tax sheltered annuity and have since rolled this into an inherited IRA. It is sitting as cash in a brokerage account at the moment. As is the case with inherited IRAs, RMDs are involved. I would not like to take on too much risk with this account. My wife may retire in a few years and I may need more than the RMD afterwards. Since I must withdraw about 3% next year based on my age, I’m trying to decide how to invest this. My thoughts have been maybe to invest in either Vanguard Wellington or Wellesley. How should a $100,000 inherited IRA lump sum be invested fairly conservatively? I thought maybe to invest in one of these and receive the dividend as it’s distributed, then if more is requi...

Since you will be moving here next month (Welcome to Houston!), you have a rather short amount of time. As are all large cities this can be quite daunting, especially with your criteria. One thing that I might have missed in this discussion is regards to your being a no car, 1 car or 2 car family. This is somewhat important as to whether you are looking at using Metro to get you to work and/or your child to their school. If you are planning to use Metro download their map and find out how that works with your workplace. From what you have said you will be working in the upper Midtown area. There has been a lot of apartment construction in this area. Research this area on the internet on something like apartments to rent in the Midtown area....

I would count her 7% contribution toward the desired savings rate if it vests fairly quickly. The details are in the plan. If she leaves in three years, does she get her contributions back?
Because your fears might be justified with the strength of the plan or that your wife might leave before fully vesting, I would rather not count it as part of your 25%. Of course if makes your budget somewhat tight there is no reason to adhere to this. A goal is just a goal.

Re: Are there advantages to being married to a teacher?
I had to redo my post after re-reading your posts. If the question is whether or not there is a benefit for yourself in having a teacher for a spouse, I would say that the answer would be yes. You could be more of a risk taker in your career knowing that you will have a steady income coming into your family finances. Of course this would be similar to most couples who work and where one has a stable professional job. You also make note that you might be somewhat tethered to the NYC area, because of their job. This no more or less a problem for anyone else who is married. There are many good posts so far on this subject. Definitely liked the comments from arbol, which brought back some good memories from a trip about 8 years ago. Hanging around the Old Quarter and seeing the underwater puppet show is something that I still freshly remember. As others have said, if you go to Halong Bay, spend the night on a boat. The sunrise, sunset and just being on deck at night are memorable. I travel solo and did not have a bad experience with "all night partying." Do your research on which boat to take. For HCMC spent most of my time in the old colonial area with side trips to the delta and Cao Dao Temple. Had a visit to the old zoo even, pretty cool. The trip is going to be tough in 5/6 days and will probably be stripped down to most basics, but try to spend ...

I would definitely consider it. I am on a state plan and about 13 years ago I was eligible to get an extra year, due to being a long term sub, the cost was much lower do it being based on my salary at the time. I jumped on it. :D Now at retirement have found out that I am eligible for another year. However the cost is astronomically higher due to my projected retirement income. This would not be a good use of my funds. :( I do not know about how your pension is based. For Texas it is the highest 3 years averaged times a multiplier and this was then multiplied by your years of service. You need to take the time to work this out. Five years does sound good at this cost. While it always hurt to take away from your retirement account, the flip ...

When you look at it we have a pretty good and pliable system here with broad parameters from which to operate.
There are reasons why SS has their sliding scales and everything is based on your needs or choices. There are a multitude of rabbit holes out there that we can jump into, but which ever one is claimed it does not mean that everyone else's is wrong. It is just that was claimed. It might work out better, it might not. Your choice.
Everyone reading this will probably have a shirt of a different color of the person who read this before you or will read this next. Again your choice.

Being a late starter meant the hope of getting to the million mark was not possible. That being said the best plan that was available was to work until my pension (Texas Retirement) and SS (with WEP subtracted) would be worth more than my current net. In the meantime I maxed out my 403b, Roth and HSA. When the state withdraw for pension was included and also adding monthly medical payments this past year my net that I will receive will surpass my current net by about 25%. Not having any debt is really very important. There should be no reason to withdraw from the 403b until RMDs kick in and in the interim perhaps convert some into my Roth. Will also continue to hold an emergency fund for those necessities that creep up with home ownership (...

Being a teacher in education and not having much information to go on, I had my initial 403b in my local credit union which was not very good. My account languished there for some time. Did I say languished? I meant bled. With further research found out through TRS that TCG would enable me to utilize Vanguard. Once my final distribution is processed in August I will move it from TCG to Vanguard as a simple retirement account removing TCG from the equation.

Listen we all know that we need to do the best that we can in saving and planning for the future, You do the best that you can do as long as you want or need to and then make it work. For some I know that figure will not allow them to live the same life style that they are living now, so they will need to save more. For others this will be a princely sum, being much more than they are pulling in now. I will not retire to the Hamptons, nor will I end up on the other side of the tracks. This type of article is meant to scare you i...

Re: Drive to Olympic National Park from Midwest
OP what is your time frame and who is going with you? It is 2000 miles from Madison to Olympic or approximately nearly 37 hours straight driving, one way. If you have the time go for it, the Interstate will be fine. There is a lot to see, get some maps and start researching it out now. Many of the places mentioned are great, but each one will be an hour or two off 90. Be selective, if not you will be limiting your time in Olympic which is your goal. If you have a month or at least 3 weeks do everything, A park like Glacier is really a minimum 3-4 full days to get any feel for it, but worth every minute of it. If it is just you and your SO or a friend, just fire it up and go, with kids, well you know them better than any of us. With less tim...

Re: Visiting Buffalo,NY / Niagara Falls area - things to see and do?
If you have a passport/card definitely spend a day or so on the Canadian side, Niagara-on-the-Lake is great and very laid back. If you are so inclined check out a performance at the Shaw Festival.
Take a drive past the falls on either side to Lake Ontario to the old military forts. Really nice drive and check out the whirlpools and how they carved the boulders.
Catch a ballgame, either the Buffalo Bisons AAA or to Toronto for the Blue Jays.
Enjoy

Re: Yellowstone guidance
While I nothing for you on fishing guides, Yellowstone has a ton of great hikes. Get on the National Parks Service website and check out the varied hikes.
