Re: Dad's Finacial Paperwork

Thank you for the good advice. I am on a clean out mission and was wondering about Dad's stuff. I will likely keep them all another couple of years just in case and also keep the death certificates forever just in case. Must look up the date we filed the final tax return for the estate. We closed on...

Dad's Finacial Paperwork

My father died in May of 2015. I was the executor of his estate. CT probate closed out his estate in Sept of 2015. All of the funds have been distributed to his heirs. Everyone is happy with the distribution. To be on the safe side I have retained Dad's tax returns for his final ten years including ...

Re: Health Insurance for Couple Early Retirement

Also, my brother has the impression that if you qualify for a subsidy under the ACA that you are placed on some form of Medicaid.I do not think that is true. He wants to have very good coverage that will ensure that they can see the best doctors in the field should it become necessary. I am getting ...

Re: Health Insurance for Couple Early Retirement

Indeed such help would be invaluable but first my brother has to read here and participate. I have e mailed this thread to him and given him the Bogleheads site address. I am the older sister who has already dealt with retiring a bit early at age 64 as did my husband who was almost 64 when he retire...

Re: Health Insurance for Couple Early Retirement

I have been reading which income amounts go into the MAGI which determines your eligibility for a subsidy. Since capital gains and such count toward it I was at a loss as to how he reduce his income to qualify. Both of us have inherited IRAs from our parents that require distributions. These distrib...

Re: Health Insurance for Couple Early Retirement

I have been reading the "What I Spent in Six Months on Medicare thread" and it has really helped me to see what my brother is up against.

Still will welcome any advice you might have to offer him.

Health Insurance for Couple Early Retirement

My brother lives in F airfield County, CT. For various reasons, he decided to retire a few years early. He and his wife have been on Cobra coverage from his former job and this coverage will run out soon. His income is more than the amount that would make them eligible for any subsidy under the ACA....

Re: Wife Missed RMD for Tax Year 2017, Husband Deceased in 2017

Yes, we did that when my mom passed without taking out her RMD for the year. Dad thought that he could do it as he had always done it for her in the past. Mom's IRA was inherited by the children upon her death. Dad did not tell us until it was too late for us to withdraw that year. This is where I c...

Re: Fidelity, meeting scheduled with the advisor, what to ask or expect .

Overall our advisor has been helpful. he did try to get me to sign up with their portfolio management program as I was leaving a current financial manager. I politely declined as I had resolved to manage my own accounts using the advice found here on Bogleheads. My husband manages his own accounts b...

DH and I have done 23 and me. I have also given permission at Brigham and Women's hospital to use my results they were able to obtain when I had pretesting for my mitral valve repair of one year ago. B&W is involved with several other hospitals in research. We were not able to have children. We ...

Applying the three funds over several accounts

I have an IRA and a Roth IRA as well as two inherited IRAs. I also have an ordinary taxable account. Would you take all of these accounts and treat them as if they are one account for purposes of deciding the allocation into the three index funds? I think that I have learned here that bond funds sho...

Help With Portfolio

My husband and I are both retired. Our jobs had several ups and downs along the way but we managed to keep our debts low and always did our utmost to fund our 401Ks and to take advantage of IRAs and Roths as we were able. We are age 66 and 68. I was able to hang onto my pension while my husband's em...

Re: Avoiding the Hassle Factor - Vanguard, Schwab, or Fidelity?

I had a problem with Vanguard while settling my father's estate. I was the executor. Vanguard received my paperwork from the state of CT appointing me as the executor. In the state of CT your appointment s for a year. It says just that on the notarized form. Dad's estate consisted of eight insurance...
