Re: Pay Reduction - What Happens if Layoff Occurs Afterwards?

I apologize for the lapse in responding, but I greatly appreciate everyone's input. It's exactly as I figured based on many of the responses, that there is no cut and dry answer and essentially at the mercy of the employer. Probably would be smarter to take a reduction, get serious about finding ano...

Pay Reduction - What Happens if Layoff Occurs Afterwards?

The mega company that I work for is laying off people and reducing the pay of others. I'm likely going to be impacted by a reduction in pay (~40%), which certainly is better than the alternative for me in this economy and my area. While I know this is probably a question for HR if my number comes up...

Re: Refinance Mega Thread

I have a question regarding consolidating my 2 loans into a Home Equity Loan. ... While we did consider a 15 year mortgage, we want a 30 year to give us flexibility on payment with concerns over potential upcoming layoffs or such... She went on to tell me that there wouldn't be closing costs on it,...

Re: DVR for OTA TV

My advice would be to exchange it for a new unit, and double-check the seal on the box before you leave the store. You will not see this issue. I returned it to Best Buy. I believe that is a discontinued model and only 1 of the 3 Best Buys I tried had but that one in stock. I just did the same thin...

Re: DVR for OTA TV

OK. After reading all these comments and suggestions I settled on Tivo Bolt Vox for OTA. After getting it hooked up to my TV and turned on, following on-screen instructions, what I got after going through a lot of this and that and waiting I got this message which read: PLEASE REPORT THIS PROBLEM Y...

Wahl kit for $20 + YouTube. I haven't gone to a barber for like 10 yrs... Yep. Desperation led me to try it myself during COVID, and I'm now on haircut #4. They come out better than when I went to the barber, and the youtube videos helped me understand how to do it. I typically start with the longe...

Re: DVR for OTA TV

Fully endorse the TiVo option. I always avoid the monthly fee option, even pre-paying for a lifetime service if necessary. I would normally agree with this, but unless you are able to secure the amazing deal that just happened in early June and get an OTA bolt with lifetime for $249, I'm not sure I...

Re: [my] real world vehicle TCO (total cost of ownership)

Another funny side note after seeing my real numbers... leasing - something I've always been against... if I could lease a similar vehicle for $300 per month, figure $100/month to cover insurance, reg, etc, another $100 for gas and maintenance, its not that far off my 40 month TCO amount. Again, I ...

Re: DVR for OTA TV

3rd reply on the Tivo.. By the time you get something working that is bulletproof, you will have spent similar. I'm going the same route, although I'm a long time Tivo user since Series one, we cut the cord and am shopping for an OTA Bolt.. Amazon has them for $137 (so does Best Buy).. Then you deci...

Re: HELP: Severance Package Concern

Thank you so much. I am only getting 20 weeks but I heard some people are getting 12 weeks additional based on 60/75 rule. 60 years of age or older and whose age combined with years of service is 75 can get 12 weeks additional. My age plus service is 72. If I would be continued for 1.5 year than I ...

Re: How do Bogleheads save on eyeglasses?

I had great luck with Coastal.com for inexpensive backup pairs.. I have Eyemed insurance, so I used Glasses.com recently since you can use benefits easily online, but if I didn't have insurance, I'd go back to Coastal.

Re: [Bitcoin] question

Leave it to humans to place value on a virtual currency in which massive amounts of energy is spent solely on maintaining the stability of it. Don't mistake my comment, I was mining from 2013 - 2015 in an area with very cheap kwh, with a very decent hash rate on alt coins that I immediately converte...

Re: Advice Needed: 81 Year Old Mother - Buying House to "Rent" to Her?

I spent some time last week and over the weekend working on the situation with my mother and family. I am fortunate to also have a wife that wants to help out my mom, and she has been helping push this as well. Anything I do, I do with her blessing and there are no secrets between us. I can't tell y...

Thank you all very much for taking the time to respond and giving advice. I apologize for the delay in replying. I believe you all are correct that I was going down the wrong path and that I should look into other options such as senior housing, especially given her age. I spent a good part of today...

Advice Needed: 81 Year Old Mother - Buying House to "Rent" to Her?

I am seeking some advice for a new strategy that I was thinking of to get my mother out of her house that we grew up in, that is in a bad neighborhood (she's been robbed 3 times). We've tried to get her to move but she has no motivation to move, nor any money to do so. The motivation factor is just ...
