I don't think DR's advice to avoid all debt like the plague is based on "financial concerns". So I think each person has to decide if the "non-financial reasons" to do this are important to them.

When I send money from Vanguard to Bank of America or the reverse I use electronic bank transfers (ACH). But I've heard wiring money is free and faster. So should I switch to wiring? What do you use?

Re: How much money do you want to retire?

I've gone through a lot of these posts.

Someone will say "I need 2 million."

But they don't say if they have a wife or no wife.

Let's say I have no pension and no wife and need X dollars to retire. What is the factor you multiply by if you have a wife too and she's not working and has no pension? Is it 2X? So instead of 2M I need 4M? If it is then that's not something to leave off a post. Or is the factor much lower than 2?

Re: Do I need to pay for a clean title to sell my car privately?

Sorry that my original post isn't so complete. But thanks for all the replies!
The title they (toyota financial) mailed me has my name up top as "the owner"
On the bottom right under "lien released by" it's got a stamp and original signature by some person there at toyota financial.
And then there's 2 other separate pages I mentioned above.
So the buyer would see that the title says on it "lien released by toyota" - it's on the title.
However their accompanying letter to me says "we encourage you to re-title immediately since all records maintained by the state will reflect the lien"

Re: Do I need to pay for a clean title to sell my car privately?

I just looked in the envelope that Toyota mailed me. It contains:

1. A letter, like a cover letter.
It says thanks for making your last payment to us, etc
I guess someone could forge this if they had lots of time

2. The title - which they mail you after you make all payments.

3. A photocopy of a document that says "PAID IN FULL" up top.
At the bottom it's got a signature of someone at Toyota financial there. But this document is a photocopy - it doesn't have the original signature.

Do I need to pay for a clean title to sell my car privately?

I'm in NJ. I want to sell my car. I have a car where the loan was paid off years ago. I have the title that Toyota Financial mailed me. An accompanying letter says the loan is all paid off. The letter suggests I get myself a clean title so that the title no longer "reflects the lien." I never got that clean title. My understanding is that that costs $85 to do - and a trip to the DMV. I saw somewhere on line that the DMV might lake the lien off the Title with a simple phone call - they just change something on their computer. I also saw somewhere that a buyer can check online to see if a lien is still on a car. Any advice here on what to do? I'd rather not go to the DMV and pay the $85 for a new "clean" title if it's not ...

We need 7 new windows to replace very old ones. I guess this is considered "new constuction" as some wood needs to be replaced too. It seems lots of pros here only put in Anderson windows. We got quotes on both and Simonton are less expensive. Does anyone have any experience in this area? Should we save money and go with Simonton?

Look at Seiko watches online for good sales. I got one half price at Kohl's online. But look at JC Penny and other sites for sales. Maybe Macy's. If a store is nearby they'll take the necessary number of links out for you. And you can return it there if you don't like it. That may be easier than mailing it back. Ideally you have a cheap Timex digital from Target to wear daily and a Seiko for Saturday night. Having 2 watches you like make sense.

Investing more when the market is down.

I have a hard time wrapping my head around this. When the market is down everyone agrees it's a good time to invest. "I'm buying stocks at a bargain price". Most Bogleheads agree. If you've got some cash set aside - invest. But I can't see how this isn't "timing the market" and thus should be against Boglehead principles. If you strongly feel market timing is impossible shouldn't every day be equal - as far as being a better or worse day for investing.

As discussed here, with Pandora One (paid not free) you can get 192 kbps bitrate. The advantage of going digital on a small device (phone, tablet, ipod) is the incredible portability. The OP might just try putting 10 or so albums in the cloud (maybe Amazon because it's free) and then listen to them via phone, tablet or laptop with a pair of good external speakers. Just to see how he likes it.

I find it hard to believe many will be listening to music from receivers in the future. What's the advantage? With my laptop hooked up to external speakers I can listen to cd's as well as I Heart Radio or Pandora. With the laptop I can get radio from all over the USA, any town, and there's no issue of reception, because reception is always 100%. If you give up on physical cd's you can just use your cell phone or a cheap tablet and listen to Pandora, I Heart Radio, or the website of your favorite radio station, even if it's across the country. Or you can put your favorite cd's on you phone, tablet, or laptop. Or put them in a cloud like Amazon's. Amazon's cloud is free, but you have to pay once you use up your allowed space. "Holding more foreign bonds can potentially increase the level of diversification in your portfolio. Allocating up to 20% of your bond portfolio to foreign bonds is a reasonable amount to capture the diversification benefits."
I have money in their intermediate bond index fund. But I guess that's all domestic. Am I a bad investor?

Re: SUV Vs Sedan

This head on collision data is good. But one thing that data doesn't tell you is the "commanding view of the road factor". I think it's safer to have a commanding view of the road. And that's not in the impact data. If you haven't noticed there's a lot of big vehicles out there.

Years ago my dad said to me "I hate those SUV's - you can't see a thing with them on the road". At the time I owned an Explorer. I said to my dad "that's why you want to be in one of them and not behind one of them".

A lot of people say "those SUV drivers drive like cowboys". There's some truth there. But if you have an SUV in snow and drive it like you're in a honda civic - you're gonna be extra safe.

Just be sure that if you decide to make an install DVD for Linux Mint...that you use the "create an image" option when using a DVD burning program. If you do not have one - I highly recommend Image Burn (freeware). That would be this: The Official ImgBurn Website and have used it since Win XP (now using the Win 7 version). I'm sure that's the correct website. But don't do what I did. The website might direct you to a downloading website. When you go there - there's a place to click to start the download. But advertisers are very clever. They put something there to click on that looks like a place - to begin a download. But it's the wrong place to click on. And I got viruses. So even with safe software you have to be careful where...

I think CFL is a bridge to LED's. It's a temporary technology. There's the mercury issue and the quality of the light issue. Hopefully now that no incandescent bulbs are being made any more LED's will come down in price. The 100 watt LED's that are shaped roughly like an incandescent are still pretty expensive. I guess there's halogen bulbs as an option - but they don't seem to save as much on electricity.

It's kinda like this. We love mom's apple pie and Thanksgiving. If they found out that somehow that caused pancreatic cancer in 2% we would question that data until the cows come home. We wouldn't accept it - ever. We love mom's apple pie.

If we found out pro football causes cognitive problems in 10% and if anything else caused something like that (say a medicine) we would ban that substance in a nanosecond. We'll never ban pro football. We love it more than mom's apple pie.

Here's Sam on wood burning. People can start denying the data.

The article says it leads to particulate pollution, which in turn lowers air quality and may be harmful to those who breath it.

Just want to make sure the distinction is clear.

I remember when the blu-ray disc of Avatar came out some had trouble getting it to work. The makers of the disc said they made the disc right - but blu-ray users need to update the firmware of their players to play the disc. This made me think about older times when you'd plop in a vhs tape and simply watch the movie - or just turn on the TV and watch a movie.. Now you have to first update firmware of your player to watch a movie!?! Are the non-geeks going to like this? It does make one think about to what extent we as humans need to keep up with learning technology on our end - to keep up with what the technology is doing.

With regards to progress and technology think of being an ant crawling down that football field of technology to the goal line. You're trying to keep up with and understand the newest technology! You've made it past the 99 yard line. Two tenths of 1 mm from the goal line is XP, 1 tenth of 1 mm is win 7. You can make it 1 more tenth of a mm to the goal line. I'm sure you can. Push yourself!
