Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

I also realized that i really don't like having to purchase ETFs everytime I contribute. It's time consuming and being stationed overseas, business hours are hard to abide by. I wish to change to the automatic investment capability of the mutual funds, i figured I just stop buying ETFs and start purchasing mutual funds. Do i need to sell and convert to mutual funds necessarily?

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

Grabiner, thanks for help. Whats your thoughts on the F-fund. For 10% total bond allocation, I have it split between F and G funds. I prefer to hold all bonds in the G fund, because you get better risk reduction. Normally, if you hold short-term bonds rather than long-term bonds, you reduce your interest-rate risk, but you get lower returns. The G fund has no interest-rate risk but has the yield of a long-term bond fund. In reference to VTWAX usage, so replacing that with VTSAX and VTIAX so i can allocate accordingly to each? Choose your target US/foreign allocation. If you want to match the world allocation, Total World Stock is 58% US and 42% foreign. Many investors overweight the US slightly, with 30-40% US stock, because foreign stock ...

After doing some research, a lot recommended VTWAX, Total world stock index fund admiral shares (.10 ER). I like the idea of fire and forget, best bang for the buck for the least risk and expense. Being that VTWAX also has international shares included (close to 60/40 split), would like some help on how I should skin this cat if I'm looking to invest 20k. Would need to increase my bond, U.S stock, and International but limited by the max contributions for TSP and ROTH IRA. Total World Stock Index only makes sense if you are using it as your sole international fund, as it makes things simpler. If you hold US or foreign stock funds as well, you will have to manage your US/foreign ratio (and rebalance as appropriate) even if you use Total Wor...

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

Another option is to hold: 1. 100% U.S. equities In your Taxable and Roth accounts. In your Taxable account, consider VTSAX/VTI (US TSM). In your Roth and TSP accounts, hold S&P 500 (VFIAX/VOO and C fund, respectively). It may help avoid inadvertent wash sales by not holding substantially identical funds in your Taxable vs. TSP/Roth accounts. 2. Hold your entire bond and international allocation in your TSP with the remainder in U.S. equities. If you have to rebalance your account or change the allocation of your contributions, you would only have to do so in one account (TSP). The above point is just a “fine tuning”. It is harder as your Taxable account balance grows to make changes as there are tax consequences. Your suggested alloca...

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

After doing some calculations this is what I came up with, % are not perfect. Can anyone recommend how I should fine tune this? TSP - 19500 / ROTH - 6000 / Taxable - 20000 = 45500) TSP (10% bond, 32% US out of 45500) G - 4% of 19500 = 780 F - 9 to 19% of 19500 = 3705 C - 70 to 65% of 19500 = 12675 ( S - 17 to 12% of 19500 = 2340 I - 0 Total = 19500 ROTH IRA (13% international out of 45500) VXUS - 100% of 6000 I don't know if 65% to C and 12% to S is ideal. I was over by 10% so i just subtracted 5% from each. Kept the bonds total at 10% (could put it all to F or leave as is) Would need 9% more in US and reduce International by 23% for overall 10/90 AA.... Taxable (20,000) VTWAX 100% of 20k 60% US - 12,000 (under the requirement of 65% domest...

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

2 year update. It’s been a while since I ventured towards the world of 3 fund portfolio and picked up a bogleheads book.Since my journey back in 2018, this is what my currently portfolio looks like now. Didn’t touch it whatsoever for 2 years and actually adjusted my allocations a little bit couple days ago upon speaking with a financial advisor, decided to fine tune it by lowering bond allocation due to my age and risk potential. Reduced bond allocation by 5% and added to “C” in TSP. TSP (max 19500) G – 4% F – 9% C- 70% S- 17% I- 0% Over 95k ROTH IRA (max 6000) VSS- stopped contributing VXUS- 100% Over $15k Total current portfolio works out to be: Bonds- 10% Domestic- 65% International- 25% I have more than 6 months saved in HYSA (over $100...

That's a valid point, will take that into consideration. Tried to capitalize on index funds by purchasing more when the market was down. Had some some success I suppose. Bought VXUS originally at 58.57 for 86 shares in January and then when the market went down, tried to purchase more, and bought at 55.80 at 55 shares exactly a month later.

time4life....I will give you somewhat different advice. 1) If you do not have a written ISP, write one. 2) Decide if the military will be your career. If so, think in terms of 20 (for the pension). And BTW, thank you from this American citizen. 3) Stay alive. This should have actually been #1. 4) As long as you are military, I would not, repeat not , buy a home. Base facilities might suck a little, but are serviceable. 5) You cannot put a high enough value on a prenuptual agreement. Until you don't have one. Trust me on this one. 6) It takes a very special person to be a spouse of a service member. Particularly when you're away on a long deployment. Think long and hard. And when you think you have reached a conclusion.....think long and ha...

What is HCOL btw? High cost of living (area). That's why just the 20% down. It's enough to avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI), which is extra monthly money down the drain, when home prices are ridiculous but rents even more so. Is there something that I can seek and readily available or you can only do HCOL in certain areas that are specific to high costs... It's just an acronym (and an adjective), not something you do or use. HCOL (high cost of living) vs. LCOL (low cost of living). Putting enough down on a home to avoid PMI depends on how much you can afford to put down and how much the home costs. Let's say -- picking random example numbers -- you have $100k for a down payment. For a $500k home, that's 20% down. For a $200k home, th...

time4life - would like to add a couple of off-topic points here... First, great job in getting your financial life together at a young age - it looks like you are really on track, so nice job and thanks for your service. I'm mid 30's now and got serious about retirement accounts around age 26/27. I only started maxing accounts a few years ago, the snowball effect has been quite remarkable given recent market conditions. Here are some other life points to consider.... 1. As everyone else said, make sure you are maxing those Roth's as you may be past the income limitations someday - you definitely are doing the right thing by taking advantage now 2. Don't forget what may be coming down the road in your late 20's / early 30's and plan accordi...

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

Single, with a damn near guaranteed military paycheck you don't need a 6 month emergency fund. Yes, you should have some cash available for a vacation, down payment on a quality used car purchase, etc. Get some of that money invested in a taxable account with total US and/or total Intl equity index funds that are extremely tax efficient. You will not regret buying broad market index funds with taxable assets you can hold forever. Learn your tax rate and tax strategies like tax loss harvesting and capital gains harvesting, deployments will provide opportunities to save on taxes. A very basic estimation, base pay x 12 < $50,700 you are in the 12% tax bracket and Roth TSP is a perfect choice. Above that income, you are in the 22% tax bracket....

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

Okay Devil Dog, I'll bite on your portfolio. Good job maxing tax-advantaged space at your age/grade. You're ahead already. Suggestions: TSP: 10% F 48% C 12% S 15% I Roth: 15% VXUS (or VTIAX when you have $10K) Responses to your questions: 1. Yes, I'd put international in the Roth IRA. It's ~22% of your tax-advantaged space for 2018. for more international, the I Fund is good enough until your Roth IRA space expands. also, my vote is don't bother with VSS. It'll just complicate your portfolio with questionable benefit. 2. The TSP has the easiest rebalancing tool in existence. Just punch in the percentages, they move the money. Given your age, the F Fund is good. Keep the TSP and shift to G in the years before retiring. 3. You can use a shor...

Re: What online bank do you use?

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! I happened to stumble upon The Aspiration Summit checking account, which offers an 1.00% APY on balances above $2,500.00. Is this too good to be true? It has foreign transaction fees , so if you're doing much international travel, that puts it firmly below Schwab checking in my mind. You'd lose out on the high interest, but that's fine if you also keep a savings account for that purpose. Their "choose the account fee you think we deserve" is kind of a put-off in my opinion. There are high-interest, no-fee bank accounts out there. It might be mildly more convenient to some people to have an all-in-one high-interest checking account like this (although for my part, I actually prefer keeping...

Re: Portfolio Re-balance... What's Next?

What should I open next for left over money? A couple of things; 1) Start saving up a downpayment for a house. (There is no hurry!) 2) Save up to pay cash for your next car. 3) Consider if you have a good "Now vs Later" balance. You are young, single, and presumably in good health and don't have kids. There are lots of things that you can do now that may be difficult or impossible to do in later phases of your life. Budgeting for something like a frugal trip to Europe could be worth considering. Watty, Thank you, offered some good points. I've realized that most of my investments and savings, have been for more long time purposes. The only short term access to money for 1-2 years I would say is my checking account. I might need a...

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

The governing board for the TSP recently decided to switch the I Fund index to the MSCI All Country World ex-US which should eliminate the need for holding small and emerging market completion funds like VSS or VWO along with the I fund. Apparently the switch might take a year or so but especially since you're early in your investments I would just recommend holding the 30 percent international that you want starting with VXUS in your IRA and the rest in the I Fund. Your desired portion of total international not covered by the I Fund will be relatively small in terms of dollars, and before too long the I Fund will swich to a total international index anyway. Good luck! NPS thank you for the insight. Another question. I understand re-balan...

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

Zero, if you're removing the I fund. VXUS already contains VSS and VWO (and EFA). Man, why didn't I realize that. So to simplify things, I will remove the I fund and sell VSS. That would leave me with 18500 in TSP. I will have no choice but to tilt more towards U.S stocks and bonds. or.... I continue with removal of I fund and VSS and add some VTI along with VXUS. That makes sense right or am i missing something here. Since my TSP can only take 18500, I put my max allocation to bond, and what i could to US stocks for C and S funds. Allocate 30% of 24000 to VXUS in ROTH and the rest of the money that is left over goes into VTI. And all that thinking led me to realize that 30% of 24000 for International is not possible in the ROTH as that ex...

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

Update to my Portfolio. I think i wish to simplify my portfolio further and contemplating on removing I fund in TSP. Current Portfolio: TSP Funds Allocation 18000 (For 2018, max contributions are now 18500) G 0% 0 F 12% 2160 C 63% 11340 S 16% 2880 I 9% 1620 100% 18000 ROTH IRA Allocation 5500 VSS 15% 825 VWO 0% 0 VXUS 85% 4675 100% 5500 I jumped the gun and bought VXUS. Not sure if that was a bad idea as I was originally planning on buying EFA. If I remove the I fund completely and just invest in VXUS, what are my percentages suppose to look like for VSS and VWO? Side question: I bought VXUS on January 8, 2018. I read there are no fees or penalties for selling ETF right away (if i was looking to sell VXUS to re-balance my ROTH to VSS 45%, V...

I have updated my TSP allocations, and still not have pulled the trigger on funds for ROTH IRA. My current TSP allocations below:

TSP Funds Allocation 18000
G 0% 0
F 12% 2160
C 63% 11340
S 16% 2880
I 9% 1620
100% 18000

In my ROTH IRA, currently have 5500. I was going to just go straight in but decided to wait till January when i will at least have the minimum 10k to invest in admiral shares. Should i go ahead and invest the 10k into an admiral share and split the allocations with VSS/VWO/VXUS later?

Ah I see. So VXUS, VSS and VMO (ETFs) in VG ROTH IRA... Would that still be 38% in VXUS , 45% in VSS and 17% in VMO? No, this is a different plan now. Now your VXUS is already what you want it to be, and you are using the VSS and VWO just to complete your I Fund holdings. You'd have to figure out how much VSS and VWO you need to get your I Fund/VSS/VWO ratios at 52%/35%/13%. Once you did that, you would add enough VXUS to get up to your target of 30% international stock total. I think my confusion is the 2 different set of percentage ratios along with 2 different paths... "So Total International has about 16% EM, and an average market cap of about $20.8B, per Morningstar. They all sound good haha. If i were to purchase ETFs, it would be ishares along with VSS, and VMO with a ROTH IRA brokerage account. That brought up another question, am I purchasing iShares MSCI EAFE ETF because it represents the "I" fund or that is the ETF i should purchase to replicate the international market? If VG provide ETF without commission, i'll go with them. EFA replicates the I Fund, so is "incomplete" in the same sense the I Fund is incomplete (it is large and developed only). If you want to do the total international approach instead, you could use VXUS. If you are using all-Vanguard ETFs, you could just use Vanguard for your Roth IRA. Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

What's an EFA? So is it simple to open a Roth IRA and invest 38% in EFA , 45% in VSS and 17% in VMO? Is it as simple as me just telling the rep to divide it that way from 5500 ? Sorry, EFA is an Exchange-Traded Fund, aka ETF. Specifically, it is iShares MSCI EAFE ETF, and therefore it tracks the same index as the I Fund (the MSCI EAFE Index). VSS and VWO are also ETFs. To invest in them through a Roth IRA, it will need to be a Roth IRA with a brokerage account. The brokerage account can then be used to buy these ETFs. It is just like buying stocks in a taxable brokerage account. You can submit orders online or by telephone. Usually the best way to do this is to use a cheap online brokerage. So Total International has about 16% EM, and an average market cap of about $20.8B, per Morningstar. The I Fund should have about 0% EM, and an average market cap about $33.9B. VSS is about 14% EM and $1.5B, VWO is 80% (different definitions of EM) and $14.5. If you did 80% I Fund and 20% VWO, you'd have about the right amount of EM, and your market cap would be about $30B. Still too big. Fortunately, VSS does not materially change the EM percentage, so we can keep that 80/20 I/VWO and just add VSS until it gets to the right size. 65% parts I/VWO and 35% gets you about $20.1B--good enough. That works out to 52% I, 13% VWO, 35% VSS. It is OK to round this out, and to be off target for a while as you build up accounts. I also agree that if y...

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

Thank you all for your help. Update to my portfolio.

TSP funds (18,000)
G/F: 12% = 2160
C: 63% = 11340
S: 16% = 2880
I: 9% = 1620

Roth IRA (5500)
Total International Fund: 100% = 5500

I have re-allocated my TSP funds and now all i have to do is set up a VG account and open a ROTH IRA. For approximating Total International, how do i allocate between VWO (emerging markets) and VSS (international small). Am I just splitting the 5500 between VMO and VSS?

Re: 3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone for their responses. Your guidance and insight is much appreciated. So far what I have summed up and not trying to be too conservative since I have time to invest: Going with individual TSP funds and international with VG ROTH IRA. If the L funds in TSP is doing 17% on bonds, i think i would want less than that and a percentage in F funds only or small split of both , and invest into the G funds as I get closer to retirement if I am still in by that time. I do like this approach : "A little more complicated: Use your own preferred mix of C, S, F, and G in the TSP, do your own thing with international in the IRA. For balancing purposes, though, you might need to add the I fund in the TS...

3 Fund Portfolio with TSP help

Hello all, I am young and new admirer of the BogleHead style of investing and accumulated a wealth of knowledge from the 3 Fund Portfolio thread from Taylor. My head is about to explode with all the knowledge I gained and I am only 1/3 through the thread. However I was eager to make some changes to my current investments and future actions. I am 25 years old and in the military. The only investments for retirement I have is TSP and after reading the forum here, i would like to open a Vanguard account. Have been investing into the TSP and starting next month (with proper budgeting and an emergency fund set up), I'll be maxing out my TSP ROTH IRA at 18k. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------...
