Re: Not Experiencing Any Problems With Vanguard

We have been with Vanguard since 1976. No problems, as some folks have posted. The Vanguard philosophy of low cost index funds and the service has been great. Thank you!

Posted for Bari Zwirn : Hi, Folks, I’m sending this notice early as I”m traveling and not sure when I’ll have wifi access. AND, I believe some of you got the wrong date for our next meeting. It is on Monday, January 13 , noon--2:00 in the Community Room of the San Diego County Credit Union.** So be sure to get the correct date onto your calendars. Re: Gifting part of RMD's to a 503c

Vest 74,

You may want to go over with Vanguard the procedure to get a QCD check from your RMD, when you are ready. Basically I go online request a payment to me and a box appears (after you are 70 1/2) asking if is a QCD. If I check the box then I'm is asked the name of the QCD organization. The check is made out to that organization and mailed c/o me at my address. I give it to the QCD charity after making a copy for my records. Vanguard will send a 1099R for all the year's distributions. I have to separate out which were to QCD and not include it in my taxable RMD.

Hope this makes some sense.

Re: Corporate bonds vs. Treasuries

Very interesting post. One more point to add. If you have an equity dominated portfolio, say 90/10, 80/20, 75/25, a case can be made for a very high or even 100% allocation to Treasuries in the bond portfolio. In that case you have considerable equity risk and also considerable upside appreciation potential from equities alone. It may be best to offset that increased equity risk with bonds that carry the lowest risk, Treasuries, and assume that the increased equity will take care of you returns. If, however, you're 50/50, 40/60, or 30/70, it seems entirely reasonable to me to consider a mix of investment grade corporates with government backed bonds to juice expected returns in that large part of the portfolio. Here is another article I found helpful in deciding how much Corporate vs Treasuries in our bond asset allocation. My concern, possibly like SimpleGift, is with increased equity allocation, and not wanting to sell equities to re-balance, will increasing treasuries maintain similar portfolio risk?

Examining Total Portfolio Performance: U.S. Government Vs. Corporate Bonds

I found this paper by John Luskin of interest and personally helpful. https://www.onefpa.org/journal/Pages/DE ... Bonds.aspx . Jon is a CFP and San Diego Boglehead.

There has been a number of forum discussions on Gov't vs corporate bonds. This study reviews previous literature and does a long term comparison.
This study sought to test the value of U.S. government debt relative to U.S. corporate debt in a portfolio alongside stocks with the goal to better enable financial planners to produce the optimum portfolio allocation for their clients.

Re: Contribution to satisfy RMD

Does anyone know if you can use Fidelity's check writing ability to make a QCD contribution by writing a check directly to the charity and avoid having to make a check request, etc? I believe Fidelity lets you write checks directly from an IRA. If you have check writing authority on your IRA account, your check made out to a qualified charity will be a valid QCD and treated as if the check was issued by the IRA trustee (aka custodian). This was clarified by Q 41 in Notice 2007-7 as follows: Q-41. Is a check from an IRA made payable to a charitable organization described in § 408(d)(8) and delivered by the IRA owner to the charitable organization a direct payment to such organization? A-41. Yes. If a check from an IRA is made payable to a c...

Re: "Vanguard Developed Markets Index Fund now tracking new FTSE index."

I wish I had never bought into this fund.... Vanguard's style drift on this one is disgraceful! +1 +2 I bought this fund when it was the tax managed version. Now they have changed it twice. However, tax managed means a taxable account and I have unrecognized gains equal to about 35% of the value. So, it is no longer what I want, but it is too expensive to sell it. Shame on Vanguard! I can certainly sympathize on the tax managed merger. It is not very Vanguard-like to strand long-term shareholders who've chosen a tax-managed fund by merging it into a non-tax-managed fund (whatever direction the official merger, that was the result, since the surviving fund is not tax-managed). But the recent change seems largely unobjectionable to me. Takin...

Looks interesting and it's all online. Will consider using it for 2015.

Thanks for sharing your take on FreeTaxUSA.

Looks that way to me. I'll also note that Tax Act doesn't have a Mac download. So, for me, I'll have to compare their more expensive browser offering against Turbo Tax.

furwut,

Thanks for the confirmation. Yes, seems Tax Act download doesn't support any other platform than Windows.

Also noticed Turbo Tax also includes the state in the download and not in the online version, although their pricing is different.

Please correct me if I read it wrong... TaxAct includes a state return (other than "free" product) in the download version, but is extra in the online version? Would expect it to be the reverse.

CalPERS $3.4 Billion in investment fees

An interesting (and annoying, being a CA resident) article about fees spent for risky investments...

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-c ... story.html

A quote at the end: "Caught in the middle are taxpayers, who must make up for investment shortfalls"

They definitely are not Bogleheads. :annoyed

Re: Carry on luggage

I second checking out Rick Steves' bags. https://store.ricksteves.com/shop/travel-bags

We've been using them for years. The new rolling bag is now 20". (I have the Convertible Carry-On and find it easier to use than those with wheels.)

Re: Ireland & Scotland tour

May want to look at Smartours. We have done 11 tours with them, including Ireland, and have been quite happy. It is a well run, good value, no nonsense operation.
