Re: Fidelity and Schwab Cost basis wrong

I opened both a fidelity and Schwab taxable account to test out, and bought $1 each of FSKAX and SWTSX on Tuesday before the markets closed. They have both decreased in value to 94 cents and 99 cents respectively. So I have incurred a loss even though the market has been up this week. Fidelity shows my cost basis per share for FSKAX to be 142.86, but it’s been trading around 134. In fact, it has never traded at 142 before. Schwab is doing something similar.

Mom might enjoy getting the checks now. However, some time in the future she will be unable to drive. Now the checks are your problem. Some time later, she will begin to "forget" she got the check. Now you have a bigger problem.

30 year bonds had a fixed interest rate of 13-15%! The only time in our country's history when it made sense to buy bonds over equities according to Warren Buffett.
It was a horrible time. People's savings were lowered dramatically by inflation and taxes.

Yes, you got 13% on CDs but you paid 30% of that in taxes and inflation was 13-15%. So you were losing 4-5% of your savings every year.

13% sound good to a person who did not live through it but they were a horrible time.

Most likely, you would have to report capital gains on Schedule D even if you did not sell.

Last year, Wellington declared a long term capital gain. https://investor.vanguard.com/mutual-fu ... ions/vgwlx

If they declared a capital gain last year, chances are good that they will declare one this year. You will have to wait until late December to know for sure.

Re: Trying to figure out my estimated taxes for 2020 is driving me insane!

I will take a shot at it:

165k + 184k - 12,400 = 336,600. This is taxed at ordinary income tax rates. Tax is $92,605

Long Term capital gains is taxed at 15% up to 441,450 then at 20%. Thus $104,850 is taxed at 15% (15,727.50). 259,150 at 20% (51,830)

So far the tax is 160,162.50.

Now you have to pay 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax over $200,000 or $19,494

Your total tax is $179,656.50

I will figure out the AMT if any later.

Well for 0.2% fixed bonds, it only takes a -0.2 inflation rate to get a 0 combined rate.

This has happened twice before where the inflation rate has gone negative resulting in the combined rates of numerous bonds to be 0. May 2009 - the inflation rate was -2.78% and in May 2015 the inflation rate was -0.8.
Congratulation, then you will make more than the inflation rate.

Say the inflation rate was -2.78% for the first six months and +.78% for the second six months. Inflation was -2.00% for the year.

But you made 0% for the first six months and +.98% for the second six months. You earned .49% on a year that inflation was -2.00%.

Very interesting article on the ETF SPY.

The fate of the world’s largest exchange-traded fund rests on the health of a group of twenty-somethings.

Thanks to a quirk in the legal structure used to set up the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, known as SPY, more than $250 billion rests on the longevity of 11 ordinary kids born between May 1990 and January 1993.

If I was her manager and she told me how I should interact with her, I would label her as trouble and try to get rid of her.

Can you deduct health premiums?

Maybe...

If you are employed and the premiums (that you pay) are taken out of your paycheck. Yes
If you are self employed. Yes

If you are paying medicare or ACA premiums. No. Unless you meet the 7.5% threshold of your adjusted gross income to be deductible.

Re: Pay off mortgage better or worse than investing in bonds?

The tax break for mortgages is all but dead. I have a $24,000 standard deduction. I use $10,000 for state and local taxes so the first $14,000 of mortgage interest gets me nothing.

It's only about 7% of my portfolio, and I probably will not hold on to it long enough to pass it on to my heirs. I have been reinvesting dividends, but I've actually had a capital loss in those lots over the last 12 months, so yay?

If you sell with a loss (even on one purchase through reinvesting dividends) and buy substantially the same thing (another S&P fund) within 30 days, you have a wash sale.

HDV dividend down 10.4%. Why?

Does anyone know why the HDV (High Dividend Fund ETF) dividend is down 10.4% this quarter?

The last three quarters the dividend was above 79 cents, this quarter it is .70881

Yes, the entire 500k is insured by the FDIC if you keep 250k at two separate banks.

Anything over 250k will not be insured.

Regarding Beneficiaries:

Number of Unique Beneficiaries Maximum Deposit Insurance Coverage
1 Beneficiary $250,000
2 Beneficiaries $500,000
3 Beneficiaries $750,000
4 Beneficiaries $1,000,000
5 Beneficiaries $1,250,000

But we're told that we need to file early so the identity thieves don't beat us to the punch.
Arrange to owe and then you don't need to worry about someone else filing in your name.
Identity thieves just put down that you had a small salary versus a large federal tax paid so they get a large refund. Since the IRS has no way of verifying the information at the time, they pay the refund. Whether you owe or not is totally irrelevant.

yousha wrote: Tue Jun 26, 2018 10:40 pm Does anyone know whether the new IRS forms will be mailed to the taxpayers?
Tax forms have not been automatically mailed out for many years.

However, if you call 1-800-tax-form and request the forms after December 1, 2018, the IRS will mail the forms to you.
