No idea what I want to buy. This is a couple years off. I'm simply gathering info dfor a major purchase. Probably a necklace for between $10,000 and $25,000. (She already has a Rolex.)
Do retail jewelers ever negotiate? I have bought small pieces (under $5,000) at the Los Angeles Jewelry mart and. although they bargain, I sometimes question their honesty.

I like Spotify. I listen to a lot of music, and most of it is new music. Spotify's algorithm is great for suggesting new mucis that you will like. It has a weekly playlist called "Release Radar" that suggest music released in the past month that it thinks you will like, and it's spot on. It also has an AI DJ that plays songs based on your age and listening habits.
BUT... if you ar enot a music fanatic, I would go with Amazon Prime's service if you have Amazon prime. It's free and has some good playlists

Is there a low cost annuity provider?
Hello all.
I am considering putting $200,000 in an annuity for guaranteed income starting at age 80. (I am 63.) I am considering something that would pay a guaranteed income for the life of both my wife and me, and some sort of death benefit for our heirs if we don't make it to 80.
Is there a provider you would recommend that has reasonable fees?
Thanks!

Back in the 1980s, I gave my wife a Rolex for her 30th birthday. When my 30th arrived a short time later, my wife wanted to get me a Rolex. Instead, I talked her into getting me a really big TV.
Long story short... That TV was obsolete in about 5 years. OTOH, my wife still has the watch, which she could sell for well over $10,000.
There's a lesson in there somewhere.

As a trial lawyer, I have to wear a watch. You can't look at a phone in court, and clocks in most courtrooms are usually behind you.
I have a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust. My wife got it for me as a gift with her own money, so it didn't cost me anything.
Long story short: if you want the watch and have the money, get the watch. I think my wife paid about $7,000 for it. I could probably sell it for that today.

Hold on there cowboy. You're talking about leasing a Model X for $2,000 a month? For that amount, you could be driving a Porsche Electric. But putting that aside, spending that much on a car is ridculous unless you really don't know what to do with your money. Keep in mind, that in this group, I used to be notorious as the guy who actually spent money on stuff. (You can see told old "Best watch for $5,000?" thread for more background.) Here's what I do: I lease a Mercedes C 300 with the basic option package. My last lease, I got a 2 door C 300 Coupe. (See below.) I put nothing down (other than first payment and registration.) I paid $615 a month including all maintenance and tax . I got a new one every 2-3 years. Basically, I rent...

Currently I'm getting about $13,000 a month in passive income after taxes and usually save between $1,000-$2,500 a month. I have about $2,450,000 in liquid net worth.
I have very little debt, maybe $20K or so.

Back in the day, when this forum was over at Morningstar, a whole bunch of posters tilted towards small value. I think that's because the "slice and dice" portfolio did pretty well back then. Small value investing hasn't done so well recently, so less people do it. (Go figure.) That probably means it's a good time to tilt toward value.

If you are a long-term investor, buying the right house in the right neighborhood is generally a good investment.
We bought a 2 bedroom, 1.5 bath 1,400 sq. foot fixer upper in 1989 for $625,000. We fixed it up and put on a second story. It's now worth around $4,000,000. So I am obviously in favor of buying and holding a residential property for the long term.
OTOH, I had a commercial property that was a complete headache, so I would never, ever want to be a landlord again.

I didn't start tracking my net worth until I got Quicken two years ago. I haven't looked at it until now. Turns out I'm doing pretty well.
In 2020, my net worth went up 16.31%
In 2021 (so far), my net worth is up 13.06%
So in two years, my net worth has increased by almost 30%! The fact that the increases in 2020 and 2021 are so close kind of surprised me because in 2020 we had a large one time pay out from my wife's trust. But we are almost going to match that increase this year -- mostly due to big gains in real estate and our portfolio.
(Note: The numbers above do not include two $5,000 watches.)

Gold diversifies the portfolio. And it doesn't generate taxes until you sell.

Re: Another lump sum or DCA question
This portfolio holds only 16.33% stocks, so the 500 Index dropping won't impact it much. In fact, when the market drop, gold and bonds (which comprise the remainder of the portfolio) often go up.Marseille07 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 4:44 pm As a representative of YDCA, I regret you've decided to go with lump sum. S&P500 near ATH right now.
Also, I put about $7,000 a month in retirement funds. So I am DCAing into other funds. So if the market drops, I will be in a position to buy more.

Re: Another lump sum or DCA question
I rebalance with cash. In other words, each week I buy a share or two of something. I always buy the one that is most off its target allocation. I don't sell because of tax consequences.

Another lump sum or DCA question
I have a taxable portfolio that is a modified permanent portfolio with the following investments: 50% in VCITX - California long term tax free bonds The other 50% is divided equally between the following; GLD - gold VTI - total market TLT - long term treasuries This portfolio has done really well. It has low volatility and generates very little tax liability. I buy a share or two each week, and I always buy the worst performer. I have a savings account with money to cover unforeseen expenses. I have a second separate savings account at my credit union with enough money to cover a year of living expenses. This modified permanent portfolio is my third safety net, meaning that if I have to touch this money in the near future, some dire emergen...

Re: Tesla Model Y Ride + Quality
If ride quality is important to you, a Tesla Model Y is not the car for you. I'd wait a year, when there will be more EVs out there. I saw a Polestar yesterday for the first time. Great looking car.

Re: How much do you spend on a hotel per night on a family vacation?
Recently booked 9 nights on Big Island over Xmas and new years: https://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/koacy-courtyard-king-kamehamehas-kona-beach-hotel/?scid=bb1a189a-fec3-4d19-a255-54ba596febe2&y_source=1_NjQ3NTY2LTcxNS1sb2NhdGlvbi5nb29nbGVfd2Vic2l0ZV9vdmVycmlkZQ%3D%3D Oceanfront room booked for $600 each night. Plus resort fees and parking. Omg, likely $700 a night. Rooms at resorts are off the charts. My wife and I wanted to book a room at the Ojai Velley Inn, and they wanted $1,400 a night! We then decided to take a vacation to Boston and New York. Hotels in cities are not booked due to a lack of business travelers. So we were able to get rooms in 4 star hotels in both cities for around $250 a night. Also, we won't need a rental c...
