I’m in a similar boat, and hold my nose and keep buying the health insurance. I figure it’s better to pay it now than have some unexpected health issue bankrupt me.
My homeowners premiums are ridiculous even with a high deductible, so why not do the same for health?

Re: H&R Block 2023 incorrectly reporting taxable IRA distribution
The premium tax credit/QBI/self employed health insurance isn’t working properly yet. I was trying to decide if I wanted to go Roth in my solo 401k or not but the numbers didn’t seem right when I was changing things. Dug in a bit and found that regardless of what I changed the software was still deducting all of my health insurance premiums even though the PTC credit was going up. Too bad the double dipping isn’t real!

Re: My marginal tax rate is lower than I thought. Reevaluating maxing out SOLO401K
I immediately started thinking about Roth SOLO401K and mega backdoor Roth because while at 24% they were not attractive, at 19.2, they are. However, from what I've read here, Fidelity does not have a Roth SOLO option. Contact Vanguard and have it transfer your Fidelity solo 401(k) into a Vanguard 401(k) BEFORE the end of the year. Make sure to tell Vanguard you want the option to make pretax and Roth employee contributions. You can allocate each years employee contribution between the pretax and Roth. Personally each year I contribute pretax until the tax savings falls below 25% and then switch to Roth. And as you discovered, never make pretax/Roth decisions based on your bracket. Actually make the calculations to determine your actual tax...

Just in case you did not know it on the Realtor.com website you can seach by a high school name just by entering the name of the high school in the search box. When I was doing my relocation I mainly just picked out a few acceptable high schools then searched on houses by the high school school name. Crime is one part of it, but there’s other considerations. Live too close to the chicken rendering plant in Cumming and you’ll have the smell, for example. That reminded me of one other thing. There is a facility in Smyrna, South Cobb County, named Sterigenics which sterilizes medical equipment and part of that process releases a chemical into the air. I have not be following it but as I recall it is at federally approved levels but there is s...

Just ordered 2022 TurboTax Home & Business download with the $10 gift card from Amazon. The total came to $65.98 which I think is about what I paid last year. Glad to get the ordering part over with. How did you get $65.98? I’m seeing $75.99 pre-tax. I also saw the $75.99 but when I ordered, it came back as $65.99 and they gave me a credit for .01 (don't have a clue what that discount credit was for) which brought it down to $65.98. UPDATE: While the invoice I printed out from Amazon said $65.98, they charged my credit card for two items ($65.98 AND $10 for the gift card). So I guess the way they figure it is when you use the gift card, it will be $65.98 net out of pocket. Kind of tricky, but I had expected to pay the $75.99 and get th...

My plan is to save the EmployER contributions each year until after I’ve figured my taxes. I’ve read some stories about how people proactively loaded up the employER contributions early on in a healthy year, only to hit a stumbling block later in the year that meant they accidentally overcontributed. I know it’s not the end of the world but I’m all for avoiding a customer service and tax headache if I can.

Another consideration—does your plan allow you to keep contributing to your 401k separately while you repay the loan? Some don’t. If not, you’d lose out on years of employer match not to mention the years of potential growth.

Re: 401k loan to pay off mortgage and AGI
The repayment is with after-tax money and doesn’t count as contributions. You’re essentially using after tax funds to repay pre-tax funds.
This is an incredibly risky venture. If you lose your job or you decide to switch jobs, the loan comes due within a short time period after you leave. If you don’t have the cash on hand it then becomes a taxable distribution that you have to pay taxes and penalties on.
You’re also taking funds out of your 401k to do this, and thereby giving up potential gains if it were otherwise invested.

I'm slowly but surely making my way through Mullaney's new book, Solo 401(k): The Solopreneur's Retirement Account, and it covers this topic. My key takeaways from the Solo 401(k)/ SEP comparison are that 1) the Solo 401(k) would likely allow for more contributions due to the employer and employee arrangement (obviously dependent upon your earnings), and 2) accountants are used to the SEP moreso than the 401(k) so they'll likely try to steer you that way.

I don't want to place on laptop that may be around for less than 12 months, if that means losing access. 2. I recently got a quote for a non-marketplace plan, which the rep was careful to point out it doesn’t meet the requirements for “minimum essential coverage” due to restrictions that don’t really apply to me or my family. The question I have is, does that distinction jeopardize my ability to deduct the premiums (I’m a sole proprietor). No, it does not. You may deduct the premiums (subject to the same income restrictions that apply to deductions of ACA plan premiums). Similarly, my dentist has a prepaid discount program available where we pay upfront for a couple cleanings and any additional work is discounted. Would that count as dental coverage I could deduct, or would that fall under a Schedule A type of deal instead? This I'm not as posit...

Agreed; the cost is basically the same as the cleanings and x-rays so the discount off potential other stuff is a plus. My question though is can this be considered “insurance” in terms of me being able to deduct the premiums as a self employed person.chassis wrote: ↑Wed Nov 23, 2022 9:12 pm Dental coverage is viewed by many, including myself, as a cost deferral plan. In the grand scheme of things, a capacitor is an $8 part that can be diagnosed with a multimeter and some know-how. Worst case, an HVAC tech will happily charge you $300 to diagnose and replace. That’s such a small expenditure for the comfort and standard of living a central A/C provides in a hot climate.
