I have no idea why you'd want the "safe" part of your portfolio in something that could actually drop

Why bother arguing? It seems to me bonds are more for mental stability / sanity than actual returns If they help you sleep better, use them. If you're nearing retirement, use them to "save" what you've grown. If your young, I have no idea why you'd bother with bonds, but again - if it help...

You could convert the traditional ... but you'll pay taxes on that if you do so You could do the traditional then switch to the Roth ... you'll just have smaller balances in each. You're young. Max out a Roth every year for the next 20+ years and you'll be in awe of how much it grows - and feel even...

Not technically selling any stock/shares, but would withdrawing funds from the federal money market fund be taxable? (Taxable brokerage acct)

No difference. There's not much reason to keep anything in the settlement fund if you're just buying mutual fund shares. EDIT: In years past you could not do same-day Vanguard mutual fund transactions at Vanguard from a linked bank account, but a few years ago they changed that, and so now you can....
