I find a very compelling case for using I-bonds as a second tier of an emergency fund. The yield will never be lower than the rate of inflation, and the present value can never decrease (unlike TIPS). My wife and I set up our ibond purchases as joint ownership. (you title the bond 'with' the spouse, in the naming convention used within Treasury Direct.)

Both Wellington and Wellesley are actively managed funds. Not only do they differ from the S&P 500 in their sector makeup, they only include very large cap stocks. (close to mega cap).

I wouldn't overlook the possibility of acquiring a new 2020 Forester. In our area Subaru is offering 0% financing for 63 months on the Forester, plus you also gain the bonus of the full factory warranty and two years of free maintenance.

IMO you would not regret purchasing either of these vehicles.

There is a "hidden" warranty related to excessive oil consumption that has not expired yet. This warranty covers repairs for this issue for eight years or 125k miles.

I am using I-bonds in such a situation. They are state tax-free, federal tax-deferred, inflation proof, and unlike typical long-term treasuries the present value can never go negative.

I have an account at ALLY, Vanguard (taxable), and a local credit union. My regular practice is to optimize where my cash is sitting on a monthly basis. Once the basic accounts are set up, moving money from here to there is quick and painless. Ally is a safe, secure, and FDIC insured bank.

1. I like maxing out your HSA, as it is double tax friendly. The only down side is that you can only use it for medical purposes.
2. Next, consider a muni-bond fund as a second tier for your emergency fund. (or I-bonds if you prefer) There are advantages to both.

If you decide to follow through with munis, you should be aware that vtebx is closed. The admiral version of that fund, VTEAX, is available with a .25% purchase fee. The ETF version of that fund, VTEB, is available with no purchase fee and an ever so slightly reduced expense ratio. (.08% vs .09% ER)...

I think that Explorer is better complement, as it tends to skew to small/growth where Wellington is skewed toward large/value. The Strategic Equity fund appears to be evenly balanced between value and growth.

In a multi-tiered approach, I have a good chunk of mine in VTMFX (Vanguard Tax-Managed Balanced Adm). This follows a few months in a high yield checking account, and a few more months in an online savings account.

In your brokerage account, select 'transact', then 'buy vanguard funds', click on 'add new fund' and then the continue button, select your fund, and continue the process. Once you go through the process a time or two it becomes much easier.

You should probably compare the after tax return of the funds. I believe that vtmfx (Tax Managed Balanced Fund) would beat all of the funds that you mentioned.
