Tax implications with dissolving farm LLC
This may be a complicated question but I wanted to get any advice I can regarding the tax implications that happens when a family farm LLC is dissolved at put solely in a personal family name. I provided as much of the details as I know below. My in-laws have had a family farm for 80+ years. It was categorized as a LLC and was owned by many family members. My father in law has over the years completely bought his brother and sisters out of their share of the corporation. He is now the sole owner. He has a couple children that he will likely split the property among when he passes. His thoughts were that it would make it easier on his kids to break up the corporation and put the farm in his name now. He went to his lawyer and asked if there ...

Re: Which backup sump pump would you go with?
I personally would not pay that kind of money for a back up sump pump that had the maintenance requirements of a battery solution. I don't care what anyone says a battery solution is not maintenance free. The downside to a battery are the following. Storage capacity is limited. i.e. long power outage it will run out of juice and you will be hosed Battery life has increased in recent years but it is no where near the life cycle of a mechanical solution when used infrequently Keeping a battery constantly charged degrades it over time. Of course keeping it fully charged is exactly what you want to do so that it has the longest working time when the power does go out. These two are in direct conflict with each other. Personally, I do think that...

Re: Engineers - What are you making? ($$$)
EE, PE with MSEE. I've been in the industry for 14 years. MCOL area. I work in a very stable industry and love what I do. That means just as much to me as the compensation. There have been several studies on it, and from my own experience, increased salary doesn't make you that much happier once you go above ~80k,
Compensation is:
Compensation is:
- 120k base
- 401k match (contribute 8%, receive 6%)
- Pension 7% that is company funded
- Bonus 20% of base (typically pays out 90 -100%)
- RSU 20% of base
- Really good health benefits (Premiums $2.6k,$1.2k max out of pocket for family)
- 4 weeks vacation plus 3 floating vacation days
- 12 sick days a year - not that I take them
- 13 holidays

Re: Before I found Bogleheads.....
7. Before Bogleheads I focused primarily in past performance of mutual funds. Bogleheads enlightened me to the fact that the focus should be on asset allocation.
8. I used to think buying individual mini bonds was a good way to gain exposure to tax free bonds. I learned from Bogleheads the risk I was taking on with individual bonds.
9. I had never heard of a mega backdoor Roth before. I recently found out that my plan allows for after task 401k contributions to be rolled to my RothIRA or my Roth 401k.
10. This site has provided many examples of how to be tax smart. I never knew how to go about tax loss harvesting.

Re: Refinance 30yr - 4.75%?
You can limit your risk if you don't know how long you are going to stay in the house and still lower your payment. Tell the lender that you want to refinance but you will pay no closing costs. You have to be very clear about paying no closing costs (I used the phrase "I will not bring any money to closing and I will not accept closing costs be added to my loan balance"). I want to be clear now, do not accept them adding the dollar amount to your loan balance. When we refinanced our situation was just like yours (going from 4.75 to 3.75). By not paying closing costs they offered 3.875. I know people will say "you are still paying closing costs, they just made the rate a little higher and rolled it into the duration of the loa...

Re: Recent Engineering College Graduate can’t get job interviews, needs advice
Couple things: An employer will recognize right away if he/she is the one looking for the position or if it is his parents pushing them. The latter makes him/ her non- hireable A GPA is important but only for a job right out of college. If cumulative GPA is below 3.0 then put in major GPA if it is offset 3.0. If neither are over 3.0 that is a tougher road to sled. Internship/Coop experience matters especially in this job market. If you have none it is very likely that you chose to think it was not important. That is a negative because almost all engineers coming out right now have it, even those with GPAs below 3.0 One of the best skill sets an engineer can have in their resume is coding experience. It is the quickest translatable skill tha...

You will need to pay taxes on the entire amount at your marginal tax rate. Depending on how much you are converting it may throw you into a higher marginal tax bracket.

I'm sure your wife and kids are none the wiser on your internal thoughts . With most things in life, happiness comes with moderation. Just be careful you don't worship at the alter of money.
Study after study have shown that experiences and relationships cause us to live longer more meaningful lives.

Re: PMI at 80% question
AerialWombat is correct >22% they have to drop PMI. You could call the servicer of the loan when if the equity is >20% and ask them if they will drop PMI. Many times they won't even require a new appraisal.

Re: wireless earbuds for exercise - airpods or ??
I am a fan of he Samsung Iconx ear buds. My wife gave them to me for Christmas this year and I absolutely love them. Some of the key benefits from my perspective:
- Battery life about 7 hours
- Never fall out of my ear
- Has 4 GB internal memory, don't even have to use Bluetooth
- You can locate them by asking Google where they are
- Has capability to start, stop, repeat, jump to next song, raise and lower volume, and manipulate training program from the ear piece
- If you really wanted to, rather of the ear buds can be the master, giving you 14 hours of play time if used independently
- I hear that they don't play as well with Apple products as they do with Samsung
- The version before 2018 had garbage battery life
