Re: Individual stock sold in Tax deferred IRA

Alan and Rick thank you for the reply. That makes perfect sense. My wife asked me that, and that is what I was thinking, but I wanted to ask my thousands of Boglehead advisers first. :D

Individual stock sold in Tax deferred IRA

Hello everyone. I absolutely love reading the posts on this site, and am truly impressed by the knowledge of the members here. I have a question: If you hold an individual stock in a tax deferred IRA and sell the stock but keep the money in the IRA transferring it into a Vanguard fund, how are the p...

Re: Should I keep my Stocks?

Do you have some free trades you have not used/used up? Call your broker for more information; I am sure they can explain what you'd be paying (or not paying). Did I receive free trades when I came to Vanguard? I just sold one of my stocks today and was charged $7. Beside the $7 in parentheses it sa...

Re: Should I keep my Stocks?

Appears the "Class A" part in the State Street fund is just a weird name and doesn't signal a load at all. Such a thing would be nonsensical given all these other low fee investment choices you have. Between your 401k and the Vanguard IRA, it looks like you can get to your overall AA lots of differe...

Re: Should I keep my Stocks?

^There is no load or sales charge associated with the Series A class of shares for the State Street Non-Lending S&P 500 Index fund. Literature found indicates the total cost of fund is .03 - that is pretty darn low and representative of institutional level pricing. If you are using this fund, i'd c...

Re: Should I keep my Stocks?

Questions: 1. How do I decide my AA? 2.What is a taxable account? Deciding your AA the Boglehead way always been a murky process to me. You do definitely want to have enough bonds in your portfolio that you won't freak out and sell stocks low if when the next financial crisis happens and your stock...

Re: Should I keep my Stocks?

^ You decide your asset allocation based on need, willingness and ability to take risk. Assume you select a 70/30 with a 30% allocation to international equities, that would be in the realm of someone your age. However, the ability to SWAN (sleep well at night) should not be discounted. If the equi...

Re: Should I keep my Stocks?

Yes he had me in about 18 mutual funds. I'll be eternally grateful for finding this website while trying to understand the fees I was paying. Did you look at the Vanguard funds I chose? ( I do not pay for an advisor ) I have been seeing a lot of Bogleheads saying they put their money in VTSAX, VTIA...

Re: Should I keep my Stocks?

I am just trying to understand why EJ advisors recommend putting half of your money in mutual funds and half in individual equities. Maybe some can answer that as well. We see lots of EJ deserter portfolios but Individual equities are fairly unusual. It's probably just this particular adviser's twi...

Should I keep my Stocks?

I am 47 and have a 401K with my employer with a current value of $150K. I also have a pension with my employer with a current balance of $40K. I finally moved my separate IRA from Edward Jones about 6 months ago to Vanguard. I liquidated the EJ mutual funds, which were $140K , before moving to Vangu...

Re: Moving away from Edward Jones to Vanguard

I did all my research and went through all the recommendations from this post and finally decided to move my IRA at Edward Jones to Vanguard. I called my EJ rep and had him liquidate my mutual funds inside my IRA on Mar 28th. Today I have an appointment with Vanguard at 10:30 AM to handle the transi...

Re: Moving away from Edward Jones to Vanguard

Since the markets are at all time highs and therefore your portfolio of individual stocks and mutual funds are probably at an all time high, I'd liquidate everything at EJ and just move the cash into a Vanguard IRA (forget about moving to a 401K). Then, you need to figure out your ratio of stocks/b...

Re: Moving away from Edward Jones to Vanguard

I'm just worried that I would not have as high of a return if I put it in only index funds. Using actively managed funds in a 401k introduces two things that I can think of. One is manager risk. They are making guesses. Educated guesses perhaps, but still guesses. Occasionally, things go wrong. Thi...

Re: Moving away from Edward Jones to Vanguard

Would it be a good idea to roll my IRA into my 401K? It might be a fine idea. The index fund choices are good. The only question is what you pay for them in your plan. Do you know what the expense ratios are? Not interested in the actively managed funds, just the index. Find the expense ratio speci...

Re: Moving away from Edward Jones to Vanguard

I have one more option that I wanted to see what you guys thought about. Would it be a good idea to roll my IRA into my 401K? I work for a large pharmaceutical company and they allow IRAs to be rolled into the 401K. The company also pays for a financial advisor from Ernst and Young to help us with o...

Re: Moving away from Edward Jones to Vanguard

I can tell this website is going to be my best friend from now on! You people are on the ball for sure. I had not considered Fidelity, but maybe I need to look into it. The funds I'm in were all suggested by my EJ adviser to answer your question, JW-retired. I was in American funds prior to the move...

I just reread all of the replies you guys have given me again. Thank you all so much!!! These mutual funds, in addition to my individual stocks, are in an IRA that I created by rolling over a 401K from a previous employer 11 years ago. It's value is around $284K currently and is in a "Guided Solutio...

Moving away from Edward Jones to Vanguard

Hello. I am new to this site. I just joined because all of my search information seemed to be coming from it. I have been contemplating leaving EJ for awhile now. I have been with them for over eleven years and I'm sick of the fees. I spoke to a Vanguard rep last week and have another appointment th...
