New and Small Retirement Investor

Using my dad's account to ask the following question. I opened a Roth IRA for 2017 with a balance of $830 at Charles Schwab. I looked at Vanguard and unless I totally misunderstood my account balance would not meet the minimum for any of their index funds so I opted for Schwab after seeing that thei...

Re: Free 2017 Tax Software Suggestions

Line 6, Deduction for one-half of self-employment tax, on Schedule SE says to multiply line 5( which is the self employment tax of $117 in my case and which is entered on Form 1040 line 57) by .50 and enter the result ($59) on line 6 of Schedule SE and on Form 1040 line 27. Unless of course I am mis...

Re: Free 2017 Tax Software Suggestions

The $830.00 is net wages. I have no expenses to deduct. It only changes(is reduced) when I input it on schedule C-EZ line 3 and multiply it by .9250 as instructed on line 4. The result,$767,is then subtracted from the $830 resulting in my self-employment tax. I am then instructed to multiply this am...

I have downloaded all three forms from the IRS website(same as freefilefillable forms) and have input my numbers but wanted to have a independent check to make sure I didn't misinterpret a particular instruction resulting in a incorrect entry that leads to a incorrect submiss...

Re: Needing To Simplify Retirement Accounts

Thanks for the updates. Her current 401k at Fidelity 14.67% Will this 401k accept inbound rollovers from IRA and from 403b accounts? I haven't checked but given Fidelity's fees compared to Schwab's and the fact that "she' will or at least hopes to retire, the thought is it makes more sense to conso...

Maybe I missed it. Have you decided on a stock to bond ratio for this portfolio? 50% stock/50% bond

Is any new money going into the taxable account? not at this time but possible once a final determination is made regarding buying a house

Re: Where To Put Sales Proceeds

Thanks for the replies. I,being conservative, tend to agree with the idea of investing these and emergency funds in the highest yielding money market or savings account to be found. My better half,on the other hand, leans more to putting them in index ETF vehicles even with the risk of downside turns...

Where To Put Sales Proceeds

Recently sold a home and would like to get thoughts on where we should put the proceeds until a final decision is made regarding purchasing another home. If we were to purchase it could be anywhere from 10 to 15 months.

Thanks for all thoughts
