Heads up: The moderators are now seeing active member posts which are using ChatGPT to provide investment advice. Some of those posts contain incorrect information.

This is a financial forum. Incorrect information will put your life's savings at risk. Our first priority is to ensure the information is accurate.

If a member is using AI to generate a post and does not disclose that fact, the moderators will take action.

Re: IRS claims I owed 6% in FUTA tax not the 0.6% I've always been paying

Based on your description, it seems like you might only owe $42, not $420. If you paid your state unemployment taxes on time, your FUTA tax rate should be 0.6% (not 6%) on the first $7,000 of income for each employee. So, $7,000 x 0.006 = $42 appears to be the correct amount. There is no harm in contacting the IRS to discuss the issue. In fact, it's better to clarify any misunderstandings and make sure your tax payments are accurate. Keep your documentation handy, as they may ask for specific details or proof of your state unemployment tax payments. If there is indeed an error, the IRS should be able to help you correct it and potentially refund the excess payment you made. It's always better to address tax issues proactively rather than l...

Re: What have you baked recently?

My next bread experiment will be the recipe mentioned in that blog post - Classic Sandwich Bread Recipe | King Arthur Baking . This recipe uses all-purpose flour. Read the comments if you want to use bread flour. Experiment complete, but I'm not happy with the results. The dough did not rise all that much, so I got a loaf that's about half the height it should be. That makes it more dense, but it didn't change the taste. It is indeed a very good quality white sandwich bread - the kind you remember growing up. However, it's the bland cardboard taste that lead me to not eating white bread. I go for the heartier, more flavorful breads - those with "character". Rather than figure out what I did wrong (combine all the ingredients inst...

Re: Allocation of Use of Capital Loss Carryovers Between Spouses

I'm not a tax professional, but I can try to help you understand the general concept of allocating capital loss carryovers between spouses when filing jointly. When a married couple files taxes jointly (MFJ), they are treated as a single tax entity. This means that both spouse's capital gains and losses are combined, and the $3,000 limit on capital losses that can be used to offset other income applies to the joint return, not to each spouse individually. In the example you provided, Spouse A has $60K of loss carryovers, and Spouse B has $40K of loss carryovers. When filing jointly, you would combine these amounts for a total of $100K in loss carryovers. The couple can utilize $3,000 of the combined capital losses to offset other income. T...

Re: Can somebody explain dependent care FSA, child and dependent care tax credit and child tax credit?

Sure, I'll do my best to explain these terms in a simple way! Dependent Care FSA (Flexible Spending Account): Imagine you have a special piggy bank that you can use to save money for taking care of your baby. The money you put in this piggy bank is taken from your salary before taxes are deducted, so you don't have to pay taxes on this money. You can use this money to pay for things like daycare or babysitters while you work or look for work. But remember, you can only save a limited amount of money in this piggy bank each year, and if you don't use it all, you might lose some of it. Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit: Think of this as a coupon that you can use to pay less in taxes. When you pay for someone to take care of your baby while...

Re: 3-fund portfolio without the Intl fund?

While many large US-based companies do have a significant international revenue share, it's important to consider the benefits of diversification when constructing your portfolio. Simply investing in US-based companies with high international revenue may not provide the same diversification as holding an international fund. Here are some reasons why investing in an international fund can still be beneficial: Diversification: International funds provide exposure to companies in various countries, sectors, and currencies. This can help reduce the risk of your portfolio being overly concentrated in one market (in this case, the US market). Different economic cycles: Different countries can experience economic cycles at different times, and in...

Re: PC Build Thread - 2020... and beyond!!!

How often do you move your PC around? It sounds like you are compromising things for about 4 kg (difference between Torrent full size and compact). Is it really worth the extra weight for what you'd have to give up?

Another consideration is that anything designed for maximum cooling will also maximize the fan noise. If your current case runs quiet now, how much additional fan noise can you tolerate?

Remember that you'll be next to this PC for hours on-end. Your brain will eventually ignore the noise, but it will build on you. Your mind will have a much easier time to focus on the task-at-hand without distracting noise.

If a company offers an S&P 500 index fund, there are usually additional funds focused on mid-cap and small-cap indexes. I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but you can "roll your own" total market fund with those combinations.

See the wiki: Approximating total stock market

There is also something known as a "completion" or "extended market" index fund. See: Extended market index fund

The picture shows the general idea for both approaches.

I revised your thread title to insert "Book review:". Otherwise, readers will assume it's a website article or something else.

Also, including that many entries is making your post very difficult to read. Try going one level higher to reduce the amount of detail.

As for the post formatting, the forum software is basically text-only or uses BBCode.

I recommend double-spacing without the HTML bulleted list entries.

I haven't seen anyone mention surge current. The startup current for motors can sometimes be twice as high as the steady-state (running) mode of operation. Think of anything with a motor - well pumps, sump pumps, home heater fans, and refrigerators.

This is especially important when calculating the capacity of a home generator, but the same should apply here.
