Re: CA sent withholding to FTB already and I left CA. What should I do?
This illustrates the potential problem with moving, or in some cases claiming to have moved, out of state on the last day of the year (or next to last day). If you file a full-year resident return for year one, then do not file a return for year two, the state will understandably assume the taxpaye...

Re: CA sent withholding to FTB already and I left CA. What should I do?
Personally, I'd do the Part Year resident form (as a signal to FTB that you've moved out) for 2020, but it won't much matter since 99.9% of your income will be taxable to CA anyway. And yes, if you want your $215 back, you'l need to file a CA NR form for 2021. The lack of a NV tax form is not relev...

Big dog-
Would it be best to just forget about the $215 refund from CA for tax year 2021?
Would CA FTB question why I didn't file a CA non resident for 2021 as it will show that $215 has been withheld for 2021 tax year?

CA sent withholding to FTB already and I left CA. What should I do?
I permanently moved from CA on December 30, 2020 to Nevada. I changed my retirement account to not have CA tax withheld anymore but was told I was too late. Now for 2021 tax year, there will be $215 CA tax withheld and already sent to FTB. No way to revert the change. So for 2021 tax year, CA will s...

The way CA handles part-year resident tax is that you compute your total income, and then the CA tax is based on the percentage of income you earned in CA. So if you have $365K total income and $65K with a source in CA, your CA tax is 65/365 of the CA tax on $365K. (Note that not all states do it t...
