Re: Question about Exchanging Vanguard Funds...

If you sell the funds that you want to sell, why would you care if you could not purchase them for 30 days? Yes, it is true that Vanguard says that one cannot purchase within 30 days, but if you absolutely must do that, there are relatively easy ways around the Vanguard restriction, so I would never worry about it myself. If these funds are NOT held in an IRA or 403(b) or 401(k) or other tax-advantaged account, then YES you will have to figure out the net capital gains that you would realize when you sell and put those on your Form 1040 tax return. Whether you pay any taxes on capital gains or not will depend on all your income that appears on your Form 1040. For instance, I do not pay income taxes on capital gains, but you might. Note- I ...

Re: Question about Exchanging Vanguard Funds...

So I started investing in a brokerage account with Vanguard in 2016 and back then I was pretty naive and started with slightly higher ER funds such as VASGX and VTIVX. This year I tried to keep things simple and put money in VTSAX, I am contemplating exchanging the VASGX And VTIVX funds that I've accumulated since 2016. Would I be paying capital gains on those if I do an exchange for VTSAX? What is your tax bracket? Yes, if held in a taxable account. No, if held in a tax-advantaged account like a 401k or IRA. Short-term capital gains are taxed at your ordinary income rate. Long-term capital gains are taxed at a lower rate, sometimes zero, the rate depends on your tax bracket. It also says that if I do the exchange, that I will not be able ...

Would I be paying capital gains on those if I do an exchange for VTSAX? It also says that if I do the exchange, that I will not be able to purchase any funds for 30 days, is that true? Or should I just leave things as they are and continue purchasing VTSAX and leave the funds in VASGX and VTIVX. Please advise.

Re: Do you meditate?

Any suggestions for starting out. I could use some calm in my life. A bit more serenity. I took Coursera's De-Mystifying Mindfulness online course some time last year, and really enjoyed it. It runs regularly, and starts again on Nov 20. It is entirely free of charge: About this course: Interest in meditation, mindfulness, and contemplation has grown exponentially in recent years. Rather than being seen as mystical practices from ancient Buddhism or esoteric philosophy, they are increasingly seen as technologies rooted in evidence from psychology and neuroscience. Mindfulness has become the basis for numerous therapeutic interventions, both as a treatment in healthcare and as a means of enhancing well-being and happiness. For millions arou...

Re: How old are you and how much do you save for retirement a year

Age- 31, married, spouse still in school
Contribute 18k to 401k, have been doing for the past four years (started working full time at the age of 26.)
Taxable-started it last year and hope to put at least 10k per year
IRA-started doing backdoor ROTH two years ago-$5,500/year
So, overall save around $33,500 for retirement.
Hoping to put more towards it once DH graduates next year (goal: 50k saving for retirement/year)

Re: Net worth milestone reached: $100,000!

Congratulations. Between my husband and I, we're at about 150K right now in 403b, IRA and brokerage funding for retirement. We're both 30 and we may not be where we should be due to getting multiple degrees and being in school for longer than usual but I suppose it is the experience that counts more :)

Re: How Much House Can I Afford?

Despite of the high cost of mortgage, I would continue to max my 401K and hopefully IRA too and additionally, hopefully husband can do the same and additionally save $1000 per month on the side.

Re: How Much House Can I Afford?

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. Very helpful. Husband is expecting a salary of 100K b/c he is in the healthcare field. On the other hand, only hesitancy is that house is on the main road.

In terms of other expenses, as I said overall, we are very minimalistic and we pretty much spend on food, utilities, etc. Right now the rent expense is very minimal, for a one BR it's a mere $875. For utilities for a potential 2000 sq ft home, we were budgeting $600 on average/month.

How Much House Can I Afford?

I am a bit of a novice to Bogleheads, however, I have been reading/using the advice of various daily contributors on this forum and I am forever grateful for the wealth of knowledge and experiences that you guys share on here regarding investment, personal finance, real estate, etc. My husband and I have started looking for homes and since we live in the northeast, everything is outrageously expensive, I grew up on this side of the US and most of my family is here too so although I have contemplated moving out west, I can't get myself to do so. That said, we are pretty much set on living here and raising our kids here too. My yearly salary is 140K and spouse's currently salary is 65K, he's also in school and his salary will be going up to ~...
