Better but not back to normal.
My anecdotal evidence is that we just submitted a warranty claim on our new Samsung disaster two weeks ago because the LEDs stopped working. They have no spare parts and are instead sending us an entire new dishwasher.
However TV prices have dropped like crazy.

Really sorry for your loss.
I agree with those that say to take it slow. Interest rates are high at the moment and will probably stay that way most of the year if not longer. You'd do fine in a money market fund or treasuries while you figure things out.

Re: Do you get what you pay for with will/trust?
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I think you all may be right that we don't need a trust. We probably won't pursue one but we included it in discussions with the lawyers as we were trying to understand whether we needed one or not since we have two little ones. Some seem to recommend it more than others. The suggestion to ask people we know is a good one but, unfortunately, we're haven't been in this area that long so our network is not particularly strong. There may be some coworkers we can ask, so that may be a starting point. I am an estate planning lawyer. You want a trust to hold your life insurance for your kids. Yes you can put trust provisions in a will but those aren’t ideal for a number of reasons. And typically lawyers who ...

Re: Recommendations for dishwashers from Costco
We just bought a Samsung dishwasher from Costco a couple months ago. I want to get a different brand but the Samsung matches out other appliances which are black stainless (never again).
The Costco experience is great but I would avoid Samsung because none of their dishwashers included separate heaters for drying so the dishes are often still wet after the run is complete.
One more thing is that one of the LEDs is already dead. I haven’t called yet.

Re: Florida Insurance and Hurricanes
The flood of lawsuits (many fraudulent) after Irma have nearly put the nail in the coffin of the Florida home insurance industry. Tens of thousands of cases were filed even as late as September 10, 2022, which was the statute of limitations deadline. The insurance industry isn't without blame though because as someone said above, they low-ball damage repair costs, auto-deny claims and force litigation. For example, our insurance company's adjuster said it would only cost a little more than $100 to paint our ceiling after Irma (we live in SWFL). We had roof leaks and he also said it was about $200 to fix each of them. I eventually got a little less than $20k but I am convinced it was only because I am a lawyer.

Re: Does Treasury Direct inform minors of account when they turn 18?
In most states, a minor cannot access more than a certain amount without a court appointed guardian. In Florida this amount is $15,000. This number is State specific but most states are very similar on this type of thing. If the account is never used before 18 then this isn’t an issue but if the minor needs the money before 18, a guardianship will be necessary. These laws are in place to prevent parents from stealing a child’s assets. It happens a lot more than people realize.
UTMAs don’t have this requirement because there is a custodian. Also, in many states an UTMA can be In place until 25 years old.

Fidelity allows you to set up notifications via text and email for certain events that happen in your account. It's a bit difficult to find because the "Alerts" section is within the "Communication Center" and not under the Security section of the website.ShadowCat wrote: ↑Sat Jul 02, 2022 2:07 pm This is one of my biggest fears.
Just to clarify, is it possible to instead of doing a money transfer lockdown to just have Fidelity notify me instead? I'd rather not restrict money transfers in and out of my accounts and would prefer a mandatory notification. Can I set that up in my Fidelity account?

Re: Finding out your Power of Attorney is useless
Why would there be any need to also complete the Schwab in-house POA form, as the Schwab chat consultant described? That would seem to be redundant with the agent form. There shouldn't be. The Schwab financial consultant that you decide to work with should be able to answer that. That Schwab form is not durable. What happens if someone has their own DPOA filed with Schwab. In at least some cases, the fact that the POA is durable is a key feature? They specifically want someone they've selected to be able to manage their affairs when they become unable to do so. RM I just reviewed the Schwab power of attorney form. It has no lines for witness signatures so it will not be valid under the law of most states. The notary section also does not c...

Do you trust this person? Some scammers do have plastic wrap machines to make items look brand new when they are in fact not. Example: I recently purchased an SSD drive at Walmart that was "new sealed in box". When I got home and opened the box, there was no drive in the box. The drives are light enough that you wouldn't notice unless you handle them all the time. Fortunately, the Walmart manager believed me and refunded my money. The drive was purchased online from Walmart and then returned to the store before I bought it but the scammer removed the drive before returning it.

Yes you need a trust to pay the life insurance proceeds into for the child. If you die young and child is still a minor, the proceeds will be held under a guardianship. Guardianships are expensive, burdensome and require a lawyer to be involved.

Never heard of a lawyer doing a title search. It's normally contracted out to a title company like Old Republic or Fidelity National. I am a lawyer and have been involved in title insurance disputes. It depends on where you live but in my state, the title agent does not have to be a lawyer. They make mistakes all the time. So yes, $377 to protect your $450k investment is worth it.
Also, the cost of this insurance may be set by state law so if you shop it you may find every agent charges the same for the policy. They may charge different random fees though.

At the very least, you should have an hour consult with a lawyer to explain to you what a prenup can and cannot do for you. This is a very state specific issue and California is one of the worst in this area of law.

The beneficiaries need to be notified that they are a beneficiary and be provided a copy of the trust. They usually have a fixed period of time to object to the validity of the trust and the list of assets and debts. . . .(Who wants to find out later they now own 1/7 of grandma’s house?). . . . There is also usually a required time lag after beneficiary’s are notified how the split of assets will happen to give them time to object if something is not right or was forgotten. It is best to get a written statement from each beneficiary to acknowledge the split. Just a few comments on the above points. Why are you seeking a guardianship for her property when she has a revocable living trust? Discuss with the attorney the possibility of placing the remainder of her assets in the trust and having a corporate trustee act as trustee of the trust. That would be the "neutral third party" you are seeking. A corporate trustee is impartial, permanent, always available, experienced in managing such arrangements and has the ability to manage complex situations such as you describe. You already have the framework in place with the RLT. I urge you to use it. Gill Guardianship law is very state specific. The language of his email is classic scammer. Is this listing on craigslist? I've sold a few things recently and have had much better luck with Facebook. I also like that I can view the profile of the potential buyer before I respond.
If you are not convinced he is a scammer, tell him he is welcome to view the car but if he does not have cash, he will need to wire the funds to your bank before title is transferred. He can meet you at your bank when the wire is occurring.

The fees have a significant range. How aggressive will opposing counsel be? And don't say there isn't one. Because if there isn't, you might as well have no agreement. You should also hire an estate planning lawyer to draft it. Most divorce lawyers I know do not draft them.
