Re: Which used hatchback to choose?
Driving 400 miles/month, fuel economy is basically immaterial. She could drive a 797hp Hellcat Redeye and your incremental annual fuel costs over a Prius or Fit wouldn't move the needle much. Now I'm not saying to buy the Hellcat. Just that I honestly wouldn't even bother using mpg as a factor in t...

Re: Which used hatchback to choose?
I used to be a Prius naysayer. I hated my Prius until a couple months after I purchased. It was Hobson's Choice for solo HOV access. Then I found out the Prius not only saves on gas, but it costs less to insure and less to maintain. There is no CVT transmission to break. It doesn't have one. The Hy...

Re: Which used hatchback to choose?
Thank you all for taking the time to respond. Lots of good information here, and some recommendations I hadn't thought of. Looks like for the Fit, ESC hit in 2011 and from what I gather, many say VIN#'s starting with J were made in Japan. Didn't know to look for any of that, so thank you! She only h...

Which used hatchback to choose?
Looking for a new vehicle for the gf, and we'd both kind of prefer a hatchback. Ideally looking for something in the $5-$8,000 range, 2010 or newer, and under 125k miles. I think our first choice would be a Honda Fit. Also like the idea of a Prius, just feel a little uncertain with never owning/driv...

Prius owners...advice?
I'm looking at a 2011 Prius Four. Has 158,000 miles and they're asking $7,250 from a private party seller. Appears to be on the lower end of blue book. I've never had experience with a Prius, or any hybrid for that matter. Are there any particular questions I should ask the seller? How many years an...

Re: Traditional/Roth split question
Wonderful, thank you both so much for the help. I tried looking into this before I posted and was coming up empty, I think "recharacterization" was the key word I was missing. I'm finding info about it now, so thank you again!

Re: Traditional/Roth split question
Yes, I'm mostly wondering are there options for this situation? For those of us who fall somewhere in between 100% of a Traditional is tax advantaged and 0% is tax advantaged (so dump it all in Roth), I'm wondering what options are there to contribute the $6k now rather than wait until tax time next...

Traditional/Roth split question
Every year I max out my IRA contribution, and I always make my contribution in the following calendar year because part of it qualifies for a tax deduction with a Traditional, but not all of it. So I do my taxes and then figure out exactly how much I can contribute into a Traditional so that it will...

Re: Saving for downpayment
i dont get why it matters to have a separate account at ally? It doesn't, it's just if there was something basically equivalent I could get at Vanguard I'd just prefer it since I have multiple different accounts at Vanguard and can manage them a little more conveniently. But I'd have zero hesitatio...

Saving for downpayment
Looking to save around $60k over the next 2 years or so and have $10k to get started. I max out retirement accounts, HSA, and all that. I want to send excess money each month into an account to save for this. Trying to determine what that account will be. I was considering the 1.15% savings account ...

Re: Tax prep training recommendations?
I've never attended an HRB school, but I have heard many good recommendations about the quality of their training. But if you are serious about learning tax preparation, you should look into getting your enrolled agent's designation. Passing the IRS EA exam designates you as someone who has legitim...

Tax prep training recommendations?
In 2017 or 2018 I'd like to start a small tax preparation and accounting business. I have a bachelor's degree in accounting, and have worked corporate type accounting for about 5 years now. I have more tax knowledge than the average person, but not nearly to the level that I want or need to do somet...

Re: SIMPLE IRA 5304 vs. 5305
So I have my frozen SIMPLE IRA account setup at Vanguard. I now have deferrals being deposited into my American Funds SIMPLE IRA money market account. I have the Vanguard SIMPLE IRA Asset Transfer form. For those that have done this between American Funds and Vanguard, do I simply fill out the form ...

Re: SIMPLE IRA 5304 vs. 5305
Maybe I'm getting a little bit ahead of myself and I just need to see how it plays out, but for any of you that have done this SIMPLE IRA transfer process from American Funds to Vanguard, let me see if I have this straight. I will begin contributing to my American Funds money market fund. I will set...

When I click both of them they both go to a page that says, " We're sorry. The page you requested could not be found. If you used a bookmark or a favorite place to access this page, the link is no longer effective. Please go to the Vanguard homepage and navigate to the desired page." I di...

Re: SIMPLE IRA 5304 vs. 5305
A good place to start learning about SIMPLE IRA plans is with the IRS FAQ: https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/retirement-plans-faqs-regarding-simple-ira-plans Also: IRS Publication 560 (2015), Retirement Plans for Small Business - SIMPLE Plans You can download the 2 VG forms if you have a Vanguar...

Re: SIMPLE IRA 5304 vs. 5305
This is all really good stuff, thank you all for jumping in on this. I've only worked here a few months, and have no prior experience with SIMPLE IRA's. I do know the owners are really lax (massive understatement) on policies, HR, stuff like that. I know for a fact these forms have not been filled o...

Re: SIMPLE IRA 5304 vs. 5305
Thank you both for taking the time to reply, that was a tremendous help! So it sounds like I have hope either way. Do either of you, or anybody for that matter, know that even if we have a 5305 if I am still permitted to setup my own account at Vanguard to use, as long as the employer is ok with it?...

SIMPLE IRA 5304 vs. 5305
I just became eligible to participate in my employers SIMPLE IRA plan. The plan is an American Funds plan with Comerica Bank Securities administering. I just met with our representative at Comerica on Friday and discovered we have a 3.5% front end load on contributions, and the lowest expense ratio ...
