Re: Tech/IT to govt jobs

I'm on the opposite coast, but work in state government in IT for the last 22 years. Age is definitely not on your side for a traditional pension that uses age and years of service in its calculation. However, the lifestyle and additional options such as health insurance after ten years of service a...

Re: My LenderFi refinance is going well

Just refi'd locally in MA in February and leaning toward LenderFi but don't want any snags. I don't have a complicated "case" and the discharges for the pre-February loans have been recorded thankfully. Someone else in MA commented recently and I wonder if the closing estimates on the quote screen a...

Re: Refinance Mega Thread

Stupid and likely silly question, but does the Amex deal have a deadline? I’m not an Amex cardholder, but I’d be willing to get one if I could get in on a good deal. Back in January we went from a 30 year 3.25 (Amerisave -> Provident) to a 20 year 3.75 (lic bank) to roll in a rising at the time HELO...

Re: College in fall

My son’s Boston school is adding an addendum with a no refund clause if they need to vacate. All but one lab (he’s engineering) is slated to be online and he will likely commute that day. My daughter is an incoming athlete at a division 1 school right next door to sophomore son. This university is f...

Re: Elementary school in Fall - choose Virtual or In-person

I was young when chicken pox was rampant and there were neighborhood herd immunity parties to expose us kids. Such a hard decision as this isn’t the chicken pox for sure! Our family decisions are high school and college-based, and equally (but differently) difficult.

Same as others...Concept2 rower. I feel like that is the only item I must take when I sell my house and downsize.

The uber wealthy from places like Atherton head east to the New England boarding schools, such as where my daughter just graduated. California and the BA is well-represented at her school.

Re: College in fall

I believe that many colleges with large numbers of OOS and international students will jump on the end at the Thanksgiving trend with eliminated fall breaks to avoid students leaving and then coming back. I also have a senior who will be a division I athlete in Boston and we are very concerned. She ...

Re: IRS Get My Payment up and running

Same as others. MFJ 2018, owed and filed through Turbo Tax. Finally able to get in yesterday. Waiting on 2020 taxes as I’m well into the phase out due to limiting contributions to my 403b and 457. Darn college expenses. Also owe again...

Re: IRS Get My Payment up and running

We owed in 2018 (and 2019 not filed yet), MFJ, via Turbo Tax, paid direct through my bank and receive payment status not available on the IRS site. Maybe I’m destined for a paper check...someday.

Re: How Is Your Job Being Impacted By The Current Crisis?

I work in public high education in IT and it has been crazy for the tech support side while the programming staff have been WFH for more than two weeks. Our college is paying everyone right now, even those whose jobs do not translate to WFH. I’m not sure how sustainable that is after April. Spouse a...

Re: College in fall

I work at a community college and have a college freshman and a high school senior. For my high school senior who was planning to lifeguard this summer after earning her credential, I will plan to have her take classes (likely Online and we are about to make that decision) this summer if she can’t f...

Re: I knew this was going to happen and did nothing...

I’m new here and simply read, haven’t amassed a near fortune like some of you and I’m too old to start the BH way now. But even before the virus it seemed like the market was just too good to be true. Someone on another forum thought the magic date would be end of January because of the coming elect...

Re: Making public vs. private high school decision

My daughter is about to graduate this year from among the list of what most would consider an elite school. She was also accepted but declined admission at what is arguably the most elite school in the country. She came from a public middle school for perspective. There are pros and cons. At the top...

Re: Thinking about (temporarily) moving all *retirement* stock to bonds - please help

I have a similar profile to the OP and was probably about 70/30 across my four accounts. Certainly 80/20 in the largest one. I did pull the trigger for that largest one back on 1/10 and I know I didn’t get the peak but I’m parking it in a guaranteed fund for now. Now for my account (TIAA) means 120 ...

Re: My 60 y/o parents have basically 0 for retirement & will have no SS/Medicare

This is entirely like The Glass Castle and the thing is that the parents really didn’t want jobs and they just wandered throughout their lives. The book opens with the main character grown Jeannette seeing her mom rummage through dumpsters in NYC. The story brings you back to her super unconventiona...

Re: TIAA Traditional: "Fair Value" or "Free Lunch"?

Finding this thread is really of interest to me and is filled with good information!! Like one of the previous posters I moved all of my CREF $$ to TIAA earlier this year in fear of what the market might do around election time. In fact after seeing my GSRA TIAA-Cref accounts under perform for sever...
