bogle.tools/portfolio has started as a way to collect portfolio info (including via imports of CSV files from different custodians) on the way towards building a portfolio review post.
The tool has started to do calculate asset allocations automatically (works now for most fidelity/vanguard funds, otherwise not possible to do for all funds, but I'll react to requests).
I plan to add rebalancing support in the tool in the next few months.
I'm anxious for people to try it for this kind of scenario, and give me feedback on anything missing or in need of improvements.

Added 3 new known ticker symbols: TBILL, IBOND, TIPS -- all classified as bonds in asset allocation calculation.
Please let me know (via reply, private message or email to suggestions@bogle.tools) if you can think of other ticker symbols that are similiar, that don't conflict with real ticker symbols, but cover popular things in people's portfolios.

Social Security: $36K (with COLA)
Pensions: $12K (no COLA)
Annual Spending: $70K
Needed from Investments: $22K or 1.344%
Curious to hear opinions here. Helping manage somebody’s finances in similar situation …they are in early eighties, in ccrc, withdrawal rate is 2.2% and they are using a 3 fund (60/40, 20intl).
Your mom has an even smaller withdrawal rate.

That is good to hear, thanks.
I'm trying to put it into the flow for portfolio reviews...and make it easy to calculate and collect that data.
[update]:
I actually decided to add the feature because I see it is one of the inputs of FireCalc.com on the your portfolio page -- would be nice to make it easier to calculate the inputs needed for firecalc.

Just announced a small improvement on a "weighted expense ration calculation?" thread: I've just added weighted expense ratio calculation to bogle.tools/portfolio - a tool to help people compose Portfolio Review posts. ( forum thread about bogle.tools/portfolio ) You can try it out with a sample portfolio here: https://bogle.tools/portfolio/topic/400371 (this is the portfolio from post topic #400371 - a portfolio I made $10K, since there were no amounts) Above the "current retirement assets", it will show: Weighted Expense Ratio: 0.041% or $3.96 per year If you want to try it out with your own portfolio, navigate to http://bogle.tools/portfolio (or press Clear Portfolio button if you are using the sample portfolio). Re: bogle.tools/saving - tool to Prioritize Investments (per bogleheads wiki)
A few weeks/months ago, LadyGeek and I briefly discussed via Private Message adding a link from the https://bogleheads.org/wiki/Prioritizing_investments page (and/or perhaps other locations on bogleheads.org) to bogle.tools/saving. If I recall correctly, we didn't want to suggest that before the tool was mature enough.
Here is my backlog of issues...Currently 15 open issues related to AnnualSavings part of bogle.tools:
https://github.com/bogle-tools/site/iss ... ualSavings
Any issues that you think need to be added?
Which, if any of these issues, or other improvement ideas, should be fixed before we call the tool good enough to advertise more widely to users?
Always hungry for more feedback.
Thanks, Rob

Built a tool (bogle.tools/saving) that helps you understand prioritized investments. Helps enact the steps from https://bogleheads.org/wiki/Prioritizing_investments which has 10 prioritized steps. 401k is step 2 and step 6. IRA or Roth IRA is step 5. As you’ve learned above, those steps are separate.

There are a few new custodians notably public.com that don't have account download but because they use apex clearing under the hood you can create a corresponding apex account and get a nice csv download of the information so right now mine has the following columns: Symbol,Description,Qty,Price,Market Value,Day Change EFV,ISHARES TRUST ISHARES MSCI EAFE VALUE ETF,xxx, xxx, xxx, xxx You can select the columns to display and the order of them left to right. Investing with money in taxable accounts is step 9 according to the Prioritizing investments wiki page. 401k is steps 2 and 6. Roth IRA is step 5.
I've created bogle.tools/saving to help you work through those 10 steps to determine the best way for you to be saving that $5,000 now.

Re: bogle.tools/portfolio - tool to help collect and format Portfolio Review info
Posted a bunch of improvements to the Portfolio Info importing module. It now supports the scenario of updating your portfolio information once a month, or once a year more easily. 1) when you first import CSV files to your portfolio review retirement-assets page , it will now show you the accounts/investments found in the imported file(s). You can choose to import them all, or just import some of them. 2) also NEW: you can import several CSV files at once if you'd like...(select multiple files in the file open dialog that "Choose Files" displays) A month (or however long) later when you download updated CSVs for your accounts from your Custodians, the importing is smoother. As long as you don't edit the Account.Note field (the fi...

Re: Is it worth the energy to manually reinvest dividends in taxable account? How can I most easily track my AA?
I wish I could plug my accounts into a program that spits out my AA automatically, but I'm not aware of a way to do that. In my portfolio I have a taxable account with mutual funds; a Roth IRA with mutual funds and an ETF; a 401k with mutual funds; an online savings account where I keep my EF and my paychecks go; regular checking and savings accounts, where I have a direct deposit set up with my checking; iBonds; and some treasury bonds. For me to calculate my AA, I have to tally everything up manually. Note, my taxable account and Roth are with eTrade but my 401k is with Fidelity so I can't rely on one of them to provide me with an AA automatically, cash aside. I’ve made my portfolio review tool support importing Fidelity account informat...

Cost Basis - supported in all, except vanguard - vanguard doesn't include that data in their CSV file formats.
Haven't yet surfaced in UI, but tracking with this issue: use share quantity and cost basis, now that it is imported #83

Re: bogle.tools/portfolio - tool to help collect and format Portfolio Review info
My goal is to make it so my personal spreadsheet is no longer needed, or at least much less so.
So I'd like to see the following enhancements to bogle.tools/portfolio:
- change imports to track share quantity, not just total price
- portfolio updates via imports be easy...perhaps if you reimport a Custodian's CSV file, it should replace the earlier imported accounts. Today you have to delete the old ones by hand. (Update 3/4/2023 -- this is done now)
- price updates performed automatically (not sure of best way to enable for me, and anybody, without $600 per year charge. Need to investigate.
- asset allocations calculated [started, see message above]
- help with AA balancing calculations

ETrade File - #2
I was submitted an ETrade file that was broken, even though I had another ETrade file that worked.
So I fixed the code to work for both.
Please let me know if I say that a format is supported, if it fails for you!!
TD Ameritrade
I was also submitted a TD Ameritrade file, but it was strange...so I opened an issue, and I will think about it a bit before I decide whether to parse it. I'd prefer if TD Ameritrade downloaded the file as a .CSV file.

Rob, here's a Merrill Edge sample. I have my own spreadsheet for tracking my portfolio, but thanks for working on this project. Re: Is it worth the energy to manually reinvest dividends in taxable account? How can I most easily track my AA?
I've added support for importing ETrade CSV file.Rob Relyea wrote: ↑Mon Feb 20, 2023 10:00 pmI’ve made my portfolio review tool support importing Fidelity account information via a CSV file.
I’d be happy to add CSV importing support for eTrade, see: viewtopic.php?t=398096
Can you please share an eTrade CSV file (anonymized if you like)?
Then, I’d be happy to work on an AA part of the tool, as I had been thinking of doing that soon anyway…
I've opened an issue: add support to see Asset Allocation for portfolio #77

Re: bogle.tools/portfolio - help others with more CSV File Format examples from different Custodians
Ok, ETrade CSV import is now supported by https://bogle.tools/portfolio/retirement-assets
This is in addition to the Fidelity, Schwab and Vanguard CSV files that were already supported.
Thanks for your help!
Note: the CSV file I was given only had one account...if it is possible to get a CSV file from etrade.com that has more than one account in it, it likely won't work. Please let me know...

Thanks. Somebody is helping me get that CSV file. Will reply back here once I've added support to import it, so others can test it out and report any problems.

Can one of you with an ETrade account help me out, please? Per thread: bogle.tools/portfolio - help others with more CSV File Format examples from different Custodians , I'm asking for somebody to download an ETrade CSV file with their portfolio details, anonymize the data in it, and share with me, so I can improve bogle.tools/portfolio tool which helps people build a Portfolio Review post more easily.

Re: bogle.tools/saving - tool to Prioritize Investments (per bogleheads wiki)
Things get speculative very quickly. E.g., even using a Simple method to estimate future income (let alone estimating the marginal tax rate that income will incur), different defensible sets of parameter estimates can lead to significantly different conclusions. Speaking of the "over 50 and just starting" scenario, Old and Started in a Big Hole is just one example from today. That person is "forced" to go with a Roth IRA due to current income vs. the tIRA deduction limit, but at a lower income a traditional IRA would probably be best. Fortunately the choice of traditional vs. Roth isn't as important as whether to invest or not. If this tool can help people choose to invest at all, that will be more helpful than a t vs. ...

Re: bogle.tools/portfolio - help others with more CSV File Format examples from different Custodians
I got access to an Ameriprise CSV file, but it doesn't have any stocks/mutual funds in it. You'll notice I changed the account numbers and the investment details to anonymize the data. I'd love to have somebody who has an Ameriprise account with stocks/mutual funds, to share the details of the section that their downloaded CSV file would show...likely similar to "Alternative Investments" section, but guessing isn't good in software... Via bogleheads private message or email (suggestions@bogle.tools) would work well for me. Re: bogle.tools/saving - tool to Prioritize Investments (per bogleheads wiki)
Does that wiki content cover these choices appropriately? Yes, when it says "Contribute the maximum to an IRA, traditional or Roth (or backdoor Roth technique), depending on eligibility and personal circumstances." It is those personal circumstances that should affect any default suggestion. E.g., someone just starting a career that is statistically likely to provide significantly above inflation annual income increases should be given a different default than someone late in a career with plateaued income and not much in retirement savings. Both those situations could be considered as target audiences for Bogleheads. Given this example: those in their 50s with neither an expected pension nor a sizeable traditional balance, and a...

On its IRA/Roth IRA page (bogle.tools/saving/ira-or-roth-ira), it currently shows all the content for that step from Prioritizing investments wiki.FiveK wrote: ↑Mon Feb 20, 2023 12:25 pmThat should depend on current vs. expected marginal tax rates, and the AGI vs. IRA deductibility limit. I'd like to make sure I have the best default. And then I want to collect info for most common situations...to give good advice.

Re: bogle.tools/saving - tool to Prioritize Investments (per bogleheads wiki)
Thanks FiveK! I bring this up, because my college aged son was told by the tool, to put up to his income into an IRA and then backdoor it to a Roth. I would have thought, it should have told him to just do a Roth IRA directly. Yes, it should. I've changed bogle.tools/saving to recommend Roth before a deductible IRA. Is there any advantage to have people do an IRA and then backdoor it into a Roth, if there income is very low -- college student like? No. But for those over or even close to the Roth contribution limit, and without significant (up to the user to define) non-Roth IRA balances, just using the backdoor process is a good idea. That avoids the need to recharacterize if they make a direct contribution and later find that their AGI is...

I’ve made a tool that simplifies applying Prioritizing investments wiki for this and any situation given each person’s data: bogle.tools/saving.
Also, as their situation changes over time, the same tool should help them apply those priorities.

Re: bogle.tools/saving - tool to Prioritize Investments (per bogleheads wiki)
I'd love feedback on how bogle.tools/saving (also used by bogle.tools/portfolio ) recommends what type of IRA to get. I bring this up, because my college aged son was told by the tool, to put up to his income into an IRA and then backdoor it to a Roth. I would have thought, it should have told him to just do a Roth IRA directly. Did the tool recommend it correctly? Or should I change the code? Is there any advantage to have people do an IRA and then backdoor it into a Roth, if there income is very low -- college student like? Data About Situation Let's pretend he earned $4,000 in 2022. Let's pretend his plus my contributions for IRA or Roth could total $4,000 before taxes are due for 2022 (4/18/2023). Should he contribute directly to Roth? ...

I've created a thread devoted to getting more CSV file formats: help others with more CSV File Format examples from different Custodians
[Link fixed by admin LadyGeek]
Hasn't really helped people's engagement with helping, yet, though! (Please chime in on that thread, or this one, to say "yes, like this idea, but I don't have any more CSV files to contribute" or "I don't want to contribute cause I think you seem like an evil hacker" or whatever...)
Update: getting help/traction for more CSV file formats now...keep it going - thanks!

Re: Overall assessment of porfolio
To help people create portfolio review posts with the recommended format, I’ve built https://bogle.tools/portfolio
On the retirement assets page (https://bogle.tools/portfolio/retirement-assets) it includes support for importing fidelity account info from a CSV file you can download from fidelity.com.
(Also supports Schwab and vanguard CSV files or Morgan Stanley XLSX files)
That should help you create the format that people are used to seeing. Please reach out to me via private message if you have feedback or questions on how to do that.
