Re: Which is better a Cryptocurrency or Gold?

Not all cryptocurrencies are created equal, either. Bitcoin and Ethereum have some degree of legitimacy, but even Bitcoin was shaken by the demise of Mt. Gox, where hundreds of millions of dollars in Bitcoin just vanished into thin air. More recently, the Bitcoin fork in August, and another one comi...

Re: cannot freeze at equifax online

OK it went through, equifax gave me a 10 digit pin, but the other agencies allowed me to choose a pin. Any issues with that? does that sound right? What do you use to monitor credit reports? Yes, it appears there's a bit of an issue with that: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/09/...

Re: CD Ladder Duration in Current Interest Rate Climate

I've also shortened my ladder, down to one year (11 months technically because I'm using Ally's No Penalty CDs), and I've reduced the time interval between steps as well. With the modest amounts that I'm working with, I don't see enough marginal benefit to justify stretching out beyond one year righ...

Cleaning Up TIRA Basis (Form 8606)

Hi everyone, My employer 401(k) plan allows roll-ins of IRAs from both pre- and after-tax sources, from conduit and non-conduit IRAs. I'd like to move some traditional IRA funds into this plan, but through a series of mis-steps the TIRA contains a mixture of taxable funds and basis. I also discovere...

Re: Opinions on Mapfre insurance claims performance?

Thanks Jack...Agree that the independent agent is crucial, and the one we've been working with has been phenomenal. We'll probably re-visit quotes with both him and with Allstate once the last accidents roll out of the 5-year window, but it sounds like we don't have a whole lot to worry about in mov...

Opinions on Mapfre insurance claims performance?

Hi everyone, I'm going through the process of getting new insurance quotes (auto/home/umbrella) for my wife and I, and we're trying to determine if it's worth it to switch from our current provider, Allstate, to Mapfre. The difference in cost is about $650 / year, which is nothing to sneeze at; the ...

Re: Health Insurance Company "Case Manager"

Thanks everyone, you've given me some things to think about. it would make sense that the insurance company is incentivized to follow up on inpatient cases, even if just for observation, to make sure that post-discharge care is satisfactory and any instructions are being followed...much cheaper for ...

Health Insurance Company "Case Manager"

Hi all, We recently brought my son in to the hospital for some testing that required overnight admission. Fortunately, he came back with a clean bill of health, and while I'm a bit annoyed that we'll need to come out of pocket for some amount, we at least have hit our deductible for this year alread...

Re: HSA as Part of Emergency Fund

I've been tossing around this idea in my head lately with respect to how to invest the HSA funds...we've held it in cash because we weren't sure if we were going to use it to pay hospital bills for my son's birth. Since we just decided to use a credit card and keep the HSA intact, it does free us up...

Re: Skip ESPP? - 5% discount on fix date with holding period of 6 months

The holding period would be a deal-breaker for me. A lot can happen in six months, both positively and negatively. I've had the experience of riding an employer's stock from $50 to $0.50 over roughly a half year; fortunately it was a loss I could handle. More recently, I sweated out some pretty oner...

Re: How do you cope with regret over selling too soon?

I once heard a story of someone who sold their company's stock (acquired via a grant) in order to buy a couch, when the company was new to the public markets. Those shares would be worth over a million dollars today, so that person has come to refer to the purchase as their "million dollar couch". B...

Re: Does new job affect pre-qualifying for mortgage?

It depends on where they are in the job-search process; when I went through a similar situation last summer, including a change in job for similar travel-related reasons, I already had a job offer in hand (it was a prerequisite for us, since the location of the job dictated where we would be house-h...

I'm also a LastPass user. The mobile app is a little inconsistent in how it identifies password fields within certain apps, but otherwise it's fantastic. I recently set up two-factor authentication with Google Authenticator, which I think is a must-have for such an important app, and it has great au...

Re: Quicken's future direction - a cause for concern

The private equity firm that now owns Quicken (H.I.G. Capital) also owns Outback Steakhouse. If this goes through, I've definitely had my last Bloomin' Onion (though my arteries would probably thank me for that). On a serious note, it'll be interesting to see how this works out for them. On the one ...

Lets say you contribute through the calendar year and then retire from the company at year end, will you still get the match when it's finally paid out? What happens if you leave for another job? Depends on what's in your plan documents, but in my case, I forfeited the match. It especially hurt whe...

Also look into Car2Go / ReachNow as alternative options to owning a car if they have a large enough footprint where you live. As a East Coast transplant, Seattle strikes me as a good place to learn how to drive. The drivers are more conservative than I'm used to, so driving here was a bit infuriatin...

Re: Wells Fargo selling HSA division

Did anyone get a notification that Wells Fargo is resigning as their HSA custodian? I'm guessing this means that they are NOT transferring my account to Optum? They letter states that they will be liquidating my investments on 12/12 and resigning on 12/28. Has anyone seen anything similar?
