Re: John Bogle has died at age 89

I always admired Mr Bogle in his interviews with his direct answers. He always spoke the truth, consistently countering the mainstream financial media bias. Frequently the interviewer would cringe at Mr Bogle's answers since Mr Bogle was so direct. He was always a reassuring voice. I am going to try to remember to periodically review his basic message since he is no longer here to remind me in articles or interviews. Very sad day.

Re: 8 mil loss on 1099...

I would report on your tax form your actual cost and sales price (or your best estimate) and profit or loss from sale. Did you say you think you lost $3.00 on sale? If questioned by IRS, I would explain the situation on the form the IRS sends you. The 8 million dollar mistake was in your favor, is that correct? The IRS rarely audits tax returns. I guess it is possible that a 1099 mistake might be flagged by the IRS computer but again you are honestly reporting proper dollar amounts to the IRS. I have always found the IRS to be reasonable. I do my own taxes and have made minor errors through the years, and have caught the IRS making errors which the IRS corrected when I talked to an agent on the phone. I know you receive different answers on...

Re: Walking shoes for plantar faciatis?

I strongly agree with the posters who say stretching is the key for treatment of plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is the heal pain which is caused when one strains the ligament that supports the arch. The best and easiest exercise is the standing calf stretch. Place your hands on a wall. Putting your weight on one leg extend the other leg behind your body keeping both heels on the floor. Lean forward, bending the front leg until you feel a gentle stretch in the calf of the rear leg. Reverse legs and repeat. (in other word stretch your calves) I am a believer in comfortable shoes and inserts as well. I paid $500 dollars for orthodics but the stretching is what really helped. It took a a week or two before maximum results. I mentioned cal...

Re: Lost social security card, steps to take?

My guess is like other posters have mentioned your social security # is probably already "out there" I am very careful with my identity with no online banking except a couple of bills drafted monthly from my bank account. A couple of months ago the fraud division of social security wrote me and asked me to call them immediately. The social security investigator asked me if I had recently applied for social security benefits and I said I already have social security benefits. I asked the social security agent why they were suspicious about fraud and was told the application was filled out "sloppily" and some of the banking information seemed "fishy" ? My thought is that my SS # could have been hacked with Equifa...

It is undoubtedly not for everyone because it is quite silly

I have only watched three episodes so it might become old but
so far it has provided me with some big laughs.
Each episode is 23 minutes.

Did you look at Vanguard Emerging Markets Select Stock Fund ? ( VMMSX- fund # 0752 ) ? Actively managed with high expense ratio .96% but compares I think with Vanguard Emerging Market Index. Who cares about the expense ratio if you hold it just long enough to prevent wash sale. Of course if it is has a big gain in the short time you hold it you would have to take a capital gain to switch back to lower fee Emerging Market Index Fund . A plus is that it is in the Vanguard family. I actually switched to this fund for tax loss harvesting earlier this year. I think it generally tracked Vanguard Emerging Market fund while I held it. I did not have to concern myself with a capital gain as it continued to decrease in price . ( sigh ) The Emerging M...

On 2015 jettas the price for these options ( called the drivers assistance package ) is $695. (through

Timely post for me. My daughter only will drive a small car because she has difficulty driving any car that is not categorized as small. Since she is a rather poor driver and drives in a city and state where most drive SUV 's and trucks , I have advocated for her to buy a vehicle with new safety features. The reason she is shopping is her 2009 VW jetta was flooded. Supposedly the 2015 VW jettas will have the driver's assistance package with blind spot monitoring , rear cross - traffic alert , and front collision warning. How obtrusive are these options when driving ? My understanding is the blind spot monitor only beeps when one activates the turn signals. Sounds like some posters turn off these options due to irritation with them. Am I mis...

I think your decision is difficult because of several issues. I think your concern about the memories may be the hardest. Transfer of funds can be confusing especially regarding ira's etc. as an earlier poster mentioned . I am not sure if you have to be in a hurry to make transfers. You asked about a high interest saving account. I think savings accounts are limited to smaller amounts than 3.5 million for federal insurance in case of default. Your second concern is what do do with the funds. Again you might not have to do anything with funds until you know more about investing. You mentioned possibly obtaining an advisor. In the 1980's tax shelter investing was rather common. Some guy at work recommended an accountant who
could set me up with a great tax shelter so I could avoid thousands in taxes. The accountant wanted me to
invest in vintage films with stars such as Jerry Lewis classics so I could take advantage of 10 or more times depreciation
without risk. It did not matter if the film rights were probably worthless ; it was simply a tax write -off . Many people
in those days tried these schemes ; later they had IRS problems due to abuse of depreciation statues. Thank goodness
I did not follow the accountant's advice ; I was dumb , but even back then I knew not to invest in Jerry Lewis. :happy

I often wondered why it is difficult to convince others about the benefits of passive investing. I think normaldude and Larry are both correct in that "people do want to be sold to " and are lazy. Another factor is the imprecision of investing. People do not want to make decisions about the unknown so they allow others to make those decisions to alleviate anxiety about their finances. Sadly this plan is generally a mistake , as we know , due to fees etc. Look at the research about how our brains are wired regarding risk . Let's face it ; the most important decision even for bogleheads over a lifetime is one's asset allocation. I am not at all surprised that the cat won. I guess you bogleheads have not been keeping up
with past research about stock picking skills of animals. For a number of years Rusty , a 1600 pound longhorn steer competed against experts in the Fort Worth Telegram contest by dropping cow pies on a numbered grid in a pen . Each
square represented a local company or a major local employer. His first year he gained 62.9
percent vs. the experts 22.6 percent . Of course that was in 1997 during a bull market.
Ultimately he won four out of eight years of picks so I guess I will base my stock picks on my cat instead
