Re: CD Break and Reinvest Options Perspectives

I would not assume that interest rates will continue to rise in the future. What does this calculator tell you?

Re: New job with 401K but already made 2018 Traditional IRA contribution

Yeah I didn't have access to a retirement plan in 2017. That's why I opened the traditional ira and made the contribution. I didn't think I would have access to one in 2018 either, but things have changed and that is why I made this thread. Thanks.

Re: New job with 401K but already made 2018 Traditional IRA contribution

Anyone can make a traditional IRA contribution. Only the deduction is income limited if you are a participant in an employer retirement plan. You did not deduct the 2017 or 2018 traditional IRA contributions, therefore they are non-deductible contributions and not excess contributions. You could re...

Re: New job with 401K but already made 2018 Traditional IRA contribution

Could the $5500 contribution to the Traditional IRA be considered an excess contribution? Can I just fill out the paper work with Fidelity and file the appropriate form at tax time and withdraw the entire $5500 for 2018 with no penalty?

Re: New job with 401K but already made 2018 Traditional IRA contribution

Got it - Good. I assume that you were forced either to take a lump-sum or rollover, correct? The 401K was with Transamerica and they kept hitting me with all kinds of account and reinvestment fees, even on Vangaurd funds. So I got my money out of there. Presumably due to the income limitations, cor...

Re: New job with 401K but already made 2018 Traditional IRA contribution

If your new 401k accepts IRA rollovers. You can rollover the pre-tax balances in all traditional, SEP and SIMPLE IRA accounts including the rollover IRA to the 401k. If you do this before 12/31, you can do a Roth conversion of the non-deductible basis with little to no tax liability. Then you can d...

New job with 401K but already made 2018 Traditional IRA contribution

So far this year: I've rolled over a 401K from an old employer into a Rollover IRA at Fidelity. I contributed $5500 into a Traditional IRA at Fidelity for 2018 because my current job does not offer any type of retirement plan and I will have too much income to contribute to a Roth IRA ($150k+). I ma...

Re: Capital One Investing Changing to E-Trade - Anyone Moving?

I held one stock at Capital One Investing (formerly ShareBuilder). I sold my entire position and closed the account last month. I printed a copy of the GainsKeeper report just in case I couldn't get back in around tax time. Good riddance.

That is just a title for the behavior described... though one might argue that just performing average is actually an above-average outcome for an investor.

Does flaw #9 describe some of our behavior on this forum?

"9. Attachment to social proof in a field that demands contrarian thinking to achieve above-average results."

Re: New AC Unit broken or "feezing". HVAC company says it's my fault for "running it too hard". What can I do?

Where did it freeze at? Outside on the copper pipes next to the compressor or inside the furnace/air handler at the A-Coil? The pipes being frozen is sign of low freon and inside at the A-Coil is a sign of bad air flow. Honestly, you can probably just remove the air filter from the rack for a few we...

Re: Should I replace my water heater?

My water heater was installed in 1997 and it had a longer warranty that required a second anode rod be installed. The rods have never been replaced and it's still going strong... knock on wood.

Re: Water Heaters

Everyone always says replace the anode, but if your water heater anode has never been replaced and it's more than 5 years old I'd say the chances of you being able to get the anode rod to break free with a wrench and come out are slim. You can watch some YouTube videos of plumbers with 5 foot long b...

Re: I Bond fixed rate 0.10% [November rate announced]

I'm a long time forum lurker and finally found something to post about. There was an article on DepositAccounts a couple of weeks ago that explains how to play the I-Bond interest rate. I would say for now the time has passed to buy an I-Bond unless you are alright with interest rate uncertainty. My...
