Re: Fund choices in Nationwide 401k

The law does not permit in-service rollovers (of your employee contributions or the employer match) before age 59.5 if you are still employed. That does not depend on what your 401k plan says. EDIT to add link: TFB blog post, "In-Service Withdrawal: The Law and The Plan Rules" . Thanks for clarifyi...

Re: Fund choices in Nationwide 401k

Thanks to everyone who answered! I'm torn between the new "Option 4" -- using a Target Date Fund -- and "Option 3.2" -- just using VVIAX. My gut feeling is that they are both decent, simple options and either approach would be fine, so maybe I'll flip a coin or something. :-) The idea of avoiding th...

Fund choices in Nationwide 401k

Hello Bogleheads! I have recently changed jobs and would appreciate a sanity check and feedback on how best to deal with a 401k situation. My previous employer was essentially a megacorp with a very competitive, low-fee 401k situation. My new employer is much smaller (around 200 people) and I am con...

Re: How much salary did you negotiate?

I'm in the middle of changing jobs right now. In my first casual conversation with the recruiter for this job, I asked him their budgeted salary range for the position and was given a range which was pretty close to my salary at my old job. I wasn't interested in taking the risk for a lateral move. ...

Re: Considering a change in asset allocation; tell me if I'm approaching this the right way

I like your new AA better than your old one, but I also believe that you have a very aggressive portfolio for your age. I love the world market weighting of stocks, but I feel you should have at least 30% bonds at your age. I am a fan of world equity allocation. Even with that, one is still overwei...

Re: Considering a change in asset allocation; tell me if I'm approaching this the right way

Go for the rounder numbers: 40/35/25, and you've got yourself a deal 8-) A last update on this thread: we agreed on our asset allocation over the weekend, and implemented the change today. We are now market-cap based international investors, which puts us at 39/36/25 for the time being. Since we're...

Re: Considering a change in asset allocation; tell me if I'm approaching this the right way

50/25/25 seems most prudent to me. Thanks for the feedback! Now that we've resolved the equities / bonds proportion and discussed further, we've further refined our remaining options down to: 50/25/25: Adds a healthy slug of international but still overweights US equities 39/36/25: Market-cap based...

Re: Considering a change in asset allocation; tell me if I'm approaching this the right way

Update: after our discussion of an asset allocation change, we found that we had reached agreement on going to 75% equities, 25% bonds / cash equivalents. We are still waffling on the US / International allocation for our equities. We decided to split our transition into two steps, so as of today we...

Re: Considering a change in asset allocation; tell me if I'm approaching this the right way

I always appreciate seeing updates in these kinds of threads, so I thought I'd add an update to mine. I've been hemming and hawing on this asset allocation change since posting this thread. My thinking has been: as long as I am hemming and hawing and don't feel strongly that a change is necessary, w...

Re: Considering a change in asset allocation; tell me if I'm approaching this the right way

It's well within reason to change your IPS. An IPS is a living document, it changes as the investors needs, ability and willingness change. As suggested, consider an upper range of no more than 70/30. If the market tanked by 50% tomorrow, your 85% equity allocation could be halved. Yes, yes, you we...

Re: Considering a change in asset allocation; tell me if I'm approaching this the right way

Thanks to all that have responded so far. I value the different perspectives, and appreciate the well wishes. I wanted to reply to a few of the responses with clarifications and additional information. If you're OK with your changed IPS and could sleep easy, it's your call. At your age, you are more...

Re: Nissan Leaf ?

I don't think it has been mentioned here yet that there is currently a federal tax credit to partially cover the cost of installing your Level 2 Charging equipment. This is called the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Tax Credit, and is good for 30% of the cost the equipment and the installation, up t...

Re: Gaming system for kids?

The advice to find out what your child wants is probably good advice. You wouldn't want to buy something he or she isn't interested in. However -- if they aren't sure or haven't been much exposed to other systems, even though it will soon be "obsolete" I think that the Wii U is still a fine choice. ...
