Re: Recently started fishing, surf casting. Any tips?
Thanks for the further comments, quite helpful.
Sabdtrap, I am eyeing the boat just for the reason you mention. Life time fun memories (hopefully fun!).
Have found the bait shop crew to be very valuable resources. Did buy some things at Dick’s, found out i bought wrong size parts for the season (didn’t catch a thing on 3 straight outings)….would have never happened if i stayed at the bait shop! They are my only stop now.

Re: Recently started fishing, surf casting. Any tips?
Thanks for all the responses. The websites will be helpful, some I have encountered, others I have not. I have found other fisherman to be helpful and friendly, especially when they notice my how excited my son is. Bait shop we go to has been helpful as well. I tend to hold off on too many questions not wanting to chew up too much of the owners time.
As for the boat. At some point it is more likely than not. Start on smaller side and see how it goes. Consistent with what some have suggested, I have been eyeing Grady Whites and Boston Whalers. Not a high priority…yet.

I would add to the people suggesting ferry to Ptown. Ptown is gorgeous, plenty of restaurants, sightseeing and beaches all in one spot. And, importantly, the ferry eliminates the stress of driving.

Recently started fishing, surf casting. Any tips?
Recently started fishing, after my 6 y/o came home from school and announced he wanted to go fishing. I did not grow up fishing. We live in a coastal town (30 minutes south of Boston), figured its part of growing up in a coastal town. After a month of using lures in rivers near the ocean then off a jetty for my son to learn to cast ( was told using lures is easier to learn casting than with a bait set up). We switched to frozen mackerel and started catching stripers. Its been fun. I actually don't mind not catching anything, find it relaxing. Anyway, my question is does anyone have any tips we should think about? Equipment, quality websites (a bogleheads for surf fishing?) or really any tips in general. There are so many sources of info, it...

Re: National Reputation of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)? other input welcome too
My son graduated from WPI 15 years ago, roughly. When he first mentioned the school to me, I had no idea what it was. I honestly thought it was the type of school you see tear-off cards on the subway in Boston for (I am a life long Bostonian). At any rate, found out differently. All of his friends received multiple job offers (different climate in the mid 2000's than now I know) ranging from biggie names to startups and 2 did their own start up. Part of the beauty, as I saw it anyway, was the major projects required to graduate can be with large well established companies. One of my son's 3 projects was with Google (2 friends went there after graduating, my son declined to interview but was invited to), another was in Hong Kong studying var...

Re: What do you think about CGM Focus Fund
I was in CGM Focus for a couple of years. Heebner was a local legend back then (and international) so I though why not (this was long before I became aware of Bogle principals). Did really well for a couple of years. Cashed out (08 I think) and bought an RV that my wife and used frequently for 7-8 years. Was a lover of Heebner then.
Later I put my wife's (recently married then) fledgling IRA into the fund. Noticed the the fund made some drastic changes with its holdings and got out flat after a year or so. Thank god.
Have not looked at the fund since then.

Re: Buying 2020 US Coin Proof Sets
I have used EBAY to backfill proof sets and silver eagles for each year my son has been around (just turned 6). Prices on EBAY can be cheaper than buying from the mint for whatever reason, and cheaper than buying from other on-line sites. Have not had a reason to suspect fraud on the coins I have acquired. If I ever decide to try Gold Eagles, I may be more diligent though.

Re: Any interesting and unusual assets or markets you follow?
My oldest son was active on the Magic Card market years ago (when he was a very competitive player). He made some $ trading cards. I just chuckled back then at there actually being a market for those cards.
Just recently tossed out a couple thousand Magic cards, he left them when he moved out 10 years ago. He told me he had the valuable ones at his condo (where he has even more cards than I tossed) so I was free to dump them. Maybe he is still trading? (He invests in traditional assets as well.) I will let him know where you say prices are (he may already be aware).

I'll add to a couple of others saying that I have Heathequity through employer but transfer employer contributions to Fidelity HSA 2x a year and make my direct contributions to the Fidelity account. Why Fidelity HSA? No fee's and can invest in anything I desire. If your HSA is effectively a long term retirement account, the no-fee's will add up.

Re: Add 457 to the mix?
My wife is a teacher in MA and has access to the same 457 you do. We have been max'ing it for a little while now. It does have a ROTH option and I agree the fund fee's are low. It does have a monthly fee that has gotten noticeable as our account has grown. Our plan is to convert to ROTH when wife retires, spread over a several (or more years) to avoid moving into the 35% tax bracket (I will still be working when she retires). We went with the 457 for reasons mentioned earlier in the thread, accessibility before 59.5. Apologies if all this has been said before, there were so many posts in the thread,,,I did not read them all. PS; I would take note of what RetireJG said about the tax bomb. I am concerned about that as well given our current b...

I enjoy this thread, so I have to contribute. I have many mistakes over the years but here are two. Decided to buy Blockbuster instead of Netflix. Got out with a slight profit, thank god. Started playing United Rentals when the stock dropped to $4 in early 2009. Bought and sold it several times in the ensuing years (was, and still is, hyper volatile), did very well. Then I 'backed the truck up' (relatively speaking) at an avg cost ~30, on leverage of course. Promptly dropped to high teens. In-laws were visiting for a month (from another country) and I was meeting margin calls on a weekly basis, with fresh cash. Wife was getting annoyed that cash was being moved from bank to broker while her parents were coming. I said the heck with i...

Agree with others. Can't have too much in the HSA. Healthcare will cost a bunch in retirement. More in the HSA helps with that, and the tax benefits are the best. Have not said anything others have not, but wanted to add anyway.

Agree with others, more reinforcement for members of this group but likely eye opening for others not familiar with foundational investing topics (author writes very clearly and explains concepts in an easy to understand manner with great examples). I plan to keep it in the 'library' for others in my circle to borrow if needed.

I wrestled with this decision recently. My wife has a 457 (Govt). She is planning to retire in June 2022 at 50. We are going to leave it as a 457 for the withdrawal ability, just in case we need the funds (~200K at that point, unless the bottom falls out of the market!)). When she hits 59.5, we plan to roll it to an IRA.

I have bot a few stocks over recent weeks, but if I had to pick only one,,hmm...GE.
At some point I will sell most of what I have recently acquired and get back to index investing. Still like that as a much less stressful way to invest, but as another poster mentioned, these are not normal times...to which I may add, times like these create dislocations that create opportunities. Plenty of arguing to be had against what I have just said, please don't,,,not for my sake anyway.

Dear Shareholders, Its been a challenging start to the year, our fund 'Gandalf Or Gollum' is down 13+%. On the bright side, close to half our competitors are having tougher starts. This group is our true competitive set. The other funds are pursuing strategies far different than ours. As a consequence of this enlightenment, we are changing our benchmark. I am very happy to state that we are in the top 5% of our true peer group. I believe most would agree that such outperformance deserves reward. As such, we are raising our base fee rate to 15% and our incentive fee to 35% (performance vs new benchmark) effective immediatly.. The new fee's will be withdrawn on a quarterly basis starting 3/21/20 (we have altered our fiscal year end). Addition...

Re: What's up with Floating Rate bond funds
I am a big fan of floating rate securities but know what I am getting into (higher default rate than IG type bond funds, illiquidity hitting pricing etc). I hold them for the LT so I am not worried about sharp declines in environments such as these (or in the 08/09 time frame). In fact I like the compounding provided by monthly dividend reinvestment when the NAV is as low as it has become. For safety I keep a cash allocation that is being directed toward equity and perhaps some more of my floating rate fund.
That said, I am sorry that you had to learn how these funds behave in an environment like this. Its all about learning from errors.
Stay safe and healthy everyone.

This thread is getting derailed...anyway...
Not rejoicing, but buying stocks cheaper is what I am doing. I am one of those 'dry-powder' guys, wish I had more, but scaling in and will continue to do so. My dry powder had consisted of cash from selling some equities late 2019. I had included the cash as part of my bond allocation.
Say whatever one may, but that is how I viewed it and what I have been (and will continue) doing. Have 5-10 years more to go, perhaps closer to the latter if we have a Japan like outcome.
