912797FS1 investment rate?
Treasury.gov says that the investment rate for the 13-week T-Bill CUSIP 912797FS1 is 5.395%
Yet when I used the same formula that I use to calculate the investment for the 13-week T-Bill CUSIP 912797HF7, I
am getting 5.409%.
I don't remember where I got the formula.

Re: Vanguard conversion to brokerage account and RMD
Have VG make the corrected RMD File 5329 with a short letter that states that an adminstrative issue with the custodian resulted in inadvertant failure to make the 2023 RMD and that the issue has been corrected. Request waiver of penalty. Keep the letter short, direct and don't feel compelled to provide copious detail. The IRS will grant the waiver. We had a similar problem on an inherited IRA years ago and the penalty was waived. I've filed numerous waivers for TaxAide clients with similar results. Note: the 2023 and 2024 RMDs will be reported on the 2024 tax return. Would you explain the part in bold? Vanguard is already taking action to have the 2023 RMD taken out. I think what he's trying to alert you to is that the 1099R for 2024 will...

My mother's English is not the best and she has trouble understanding the local Social Security employees.
Yesterday, she was told that someone would be calling her at 1:30pm, but no one did.
It may have been a lie to palm off the issue to someone else.
Can I call in on my mother's behalf?

Re: SSA-561-U2 Request for Reconsideration
Would sending via Certified Mail be a better alternative to dropping the form off at the local office in person?
The letter says my mom owes past-due Part B and past-due Part D.
So, she is only getting $1 in March 2024.
SSA writes We will withold your monthly payments until you have paid all of the past-due Medicare amounts
you owe.
Yet, instead of the remainder of the past due being taken out just in April 2024, they
are decreasing her SS benefits for every month starting April 2024.
How does this make any sense?

SSA-561-U2 Request for Reconsideration
My mom received a letter from the SSA.
The back of the letter said that if she wants to appeal she needs to fill out and return SSA-561-U2 Request for Reconsideration.
Has anyone done this before?
The odd thing is that pages 1 and 3 look to be identical.
Does she mail only one completed page back?

Thanks All Excellent advise. I did a rough back of the envelope calculations of monthly expenses and they came to approx $1777/month, say an even 2k I can meet those thru SS and then withdraw on an as needed basis from the fixed income part of my portfolio, letting the equities part grow DW is already retired and has a decent pension and that along with SS meets her needs She has a somewhat equivalent 401k plan, which I help manage. We do not have an extravagant lifestyle and enjoy hanging around at home, gardening, minor landscaping etc The reason I want to fund retirement for the both of us is that since my health is not the best, I want to save her 401k for the times when I’m not going to be around. Re: changing PCP just for 1 year?
How often do you use this PCP? In my experience, the dollars hitting my insurance are mainly from things like diagnostics, lab work etc. One alternative might be to just suck it up and pay out of your own pocket for the visits and make sure any referred services are in-network. But that decision might depend on usage patterns; I see mine once or twice a year. Usually once a year. The bloodwork is done at Labcorp which is in-network. Really depends on several things... 1. How much do you utilize healthcare particularly your PCP? More than once a year? If not, you could have a visit close to end of current cycle, then switch and then rejoin? 2. Is a potential new PCP on the same electronic health record as the current so there would be easy ...

changing PCP just for 1 year?
When I selected my medical insurance during open enrollment, my PCP was still in-network.
I actually selected the same insurance plan as last year.
Unfortunately, my PCP now is listed on Aetna's website as out-of-network.
Now, I have to find another PCP with the intention of going back to my current PCP in 2025.
Is there anything else I can do?

Re: compromised Target physical gift card
People record the numbers on the backs of gift cards in stores and seal back the packages where the numbers are covered and then wait a few days or a week, check if it has a balance, then drain it immediately. +1. Criminals recording gift card numbers in stores is unfortunately common in some areas. I won't buy physical gift cards in a store any more. Most large chains let you buy them online and email or print them out. I tore off the back of the envelope myself and it wasn't that easy to do. And it didn't look like it was tampered with. If so, it was an extremely professional job. With Target gift cards you have to scratch off similar to lottery tickets to obtain the Card # and the Access #. I think the more likely scenario is that they ...

Purchased a $20 Target gift card inside a store on Jan 25, 2024 along with other groceries.
Went to use it today Feb 9, 2024 and found that there was $0 balance.
Turns out from calling the 800 number on the back of the gift card, that the gift card had been used at the Atlantic Terminal store on Jan 28, 2024.
Target is sending me a replacement card in the mail.
This must have been an inside job.
I had just opened the paper envelope with the gift card last night.
Any ideas how this happened?

I just sold my house. I will not be buying another house as I have moved in with a relative and am paying rent and part of the utilities. Prior to the sell, I had about 60/40 in total stock market index/total bond market index and the rest in high-yield savings and T-Bills. I have put some of the house sale proceeds into SCHB. But I am not sure what to do with the remaining proceeds. It is currently sitting at Fidelity in core position earning 4+% interest. I am no longer working at a regular job 9-5 job, and I doubt I will be in the forseeable future. I want to do consulting on a 1099 basis but that is always uncertain. I am thinking about putting some of the money into T-Bill ladder. And putting the rest into VTI Vanguard Total Stock Mark...

capital gain and taxes from house being sold and ACA
It looks like the house is sold with a closing later this month.
I will end up with a sizeable chunk of long-term capital gain which will effect
my taxes for 2023 and which in turn effect my ACA premium subsidy.
Going forward I will have more income, but it will be below $58,320.
What should I be thinking about with the proceed from the sale of my house?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Real Estate: Offering strategy
My agent was telling me about this very tactic that happened to a fellow agent. The buyer's agent let slip that the buyer had made an offer on another property. The seller's agent immediately cut off that buyer and agreed to the offer from the second buyer. How would you feel about this tactic if you were a seller and not the buyer? Just a point of clarification: the AGENT did not make that decision, the seller did. The AGENT may have advised the SELLER to make that decision but the AGENT does not make decisions. It's another common misunderstanding about what a realtor does. Yes. I understand. The seller had ranked buyer #2 second on their list so when this shenanigan happened, buyer #1 was out of the picture. And, not only was buyer #1 o...

I have 3 properties that I am looking at. I feel strongly that two of them are of high interest to me but I cannot offer sight unseen. I am going down on Saturday to see all 3 properties. My agent says that we should make an offer on all 3 properties, on Wednesday (3 days before Saturday). He says that since escrow is due 3 days after offer, we can make the offers, "reserve" them like this, and then pay escrow and move forward on the one I like (or none if I get cold feet). Aside from this seeming a bit rude, is this a strategy people actually use and does it work? I do not see the downside of this but on the other hand I feel like I must be missing something or all buyers would do this. My agent was telling me about this very ta...

After an unexpectedly hefty rent increase this year, I'm finally starting to consider alternatives after being a renter all my life so far. I can very comfortably afford rent still but if it continues at this pace, I can see myself getting priced out in the intermediate future. Long-term, I expect to stay at my job and within 1 hour commuting distance of this job until retirement (in 25-30 years). I've read a lot of the existing housing threads, but I'm particularly interested in experiences from single people who don't need to take into account childcare/extra space for family and who might struggle with buying too much house/handling all the maintenance of a house on their own. Has anyone tried the mortgage bill pay (via debit card) that PayPal Bill Pay offers for limited mortgage companies and, if so, how does one specify that the payment is to be applied as the next payment due rather than additional principal payment? I did a $1 test payment some time ago but it seemed to apply as additional principal (although I did still have autopay on, was just hoping it would reduce the following months autopay payment by $1 which it did not). Thank you! Haven't tried this. Are there any GCs or VGCs that you purchased and can use as a "debit card" for this purpose btw ? It is three MONTHS from account opening, not three statement cycles. It may take several weeks for your first statement to close. If you applied today and got instant approval your target date is June 14th - approximately. Not sure if they go by calendar date or 3X30 days. Either way you should complete spend several days earlier to make sure there are no hiccups. I almost lost a bonus recently because I ordered something from Walmart and did curbside pickup. A week later they issued a credit because they messed up and never recorded that I actually picked the thing up. It is a Visa signature card so technically it has no preset spending limit - you just can't carry a balance over your credit limit month to month. Chase likely has a somewh...

Now they are offering the ability to buy T-bills in $100 increments by partnering with Jiko.
The T-bills are custodied at the Bank of New York Mellon.

Is there any advantage to using Public.com to purchase Treasuries vs at Fidelity except for the lower $100 limit?
More importantly is there anything I should be aware of?

Re: Citi Double Cash: Logistics
I had a negative experience with this card. YMMV, but I thought I would mention it in case it’s helpful. Citi started me out with a ridiculously low credit limit - $2,000 or $2,500, as I recall. So, even though the card had “unlimited” cash back, capping the monthly spend effectively limited the cash back for me as my monthly credit card spend is usually $4,000 - $5,000. I requested a credit limit increase and Citi denied it. I was a little surprised considering I have another Citi credit card (Costco) and a FICO score over 800. So, I stopped using the card. About 3 months later, Citi unilaterally cancelled the card because my accounts was “inactive” for too long. Get the Wells Fargo Active Cash. They've eliminated the cashback limit.

Re: credit limit $3K on credit card
I guess I'll wait until I get my first statement and pay it off before filing my federal and state taxes
where I had plan on using the card to pay the taxes I owe.

Re: Tales from this insane real estate market [Home sales]
We've been looking in the South Denver Suburbs since October of 2022. The house we put in an offer on in October: we were a day too late and they accepted an earlier offer at the list price of $725k. We put in an offer on a home last week for $10k over the list price of $670k, even though it needed anywhere from $100 - $150k of work put in to it. We lost to someone else that waived an inspection entirely. Over the weekend we put in an offer on another $725k house, we started at $10k over and had an escalation clause up to $25k over. Was just notified we didn't get it, that there were 10 other offers but they didn't say what the high one was. There's minimal inventory: the homes are either under budget and don't meet our needs, or they're w...

Yet, they took a lower offer which makes me wonder whether they still had to sell but not immediately.TomatoTomahto wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 11:07 amA lot of people are not under any time pressure to sell. We are not selling, but if we were, we'd be in that camp.

credit limit $3K on credit card
I applied for and was approved for Chase Ink Business Cash.
The credit limit is $3K.
The sign-up bonus is $900 on $6K spend within 3 statement cycles.
I am guessing that I can spend < $3K and pay it off even before I receive the first statement?
In other words,
spend $2800
pay $2800 from linked bank account
spend $500
pay $500 from linked bank account
and so forth
and still get the $900 bonus after $6K spend?

Re: Tales from this insane real estate market [Home sales]
One house went on the market at $650K 7/22/2022
Finally sold on 2/10/2023 for $625K
I would love to know how many offers they rejected before finally accepting the lower offer.
Maybe their new house is finally complete?

Yes. Be careful when clicking through checkout process.CenTexan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 10:29 am Be aware that you will soon start seeing "Use your Citi Thank-You points to pay $xxx" at various stores (Walmart, Amazon, CVS, gas stations, etc). In all cases I've seen, the cash value is LESS (you lose) if used at point of sale than what you would get if you just keep banking your points until you request a cash back payment from Citi card site (as mentioned above, taking direct deposit is best).
There is no way to opt out.

Re: Tales from this insane real estate market [Home sales]
I’m seeing a lot of “bunching”, in my town there’s a nice house currently listed it’s 3,100 sf on a half acre in a nice neighborhood, a 1,920 sf townhouse that sold recently on a .1 acre lot was 60% of the cost. This is even more pronounced with single family homes where it might be 70-80% of the cost for 2,200 sf on a quarter acre. The lower end to middle of the market is ripping, whereas the higher end is more placid. The townhomes are up substantially with one selling for 70% more than when it traded hands in 2018, another is up 60% since 2010, another 82% since 2013 and another was up 71% since 2018. It seems kind of crazy to me to spend 70% of what a nice single family runs to get a townhome or “starter” home . At least where I am nic...

I thought inventory in Boise area had increased by 150% ?LAS_Rick wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 9:26 am In past 5 months we sold in Las Vegas and bought in Boise...it was pretty brutal. Sold Vegas home for 15K over asking with 3 offers in first day. Took over 300k in cash to Boise to find a home and it was pretty brutal. Finally got our 3rd home we put offers on - but had to go about 200K over our planned budget, and still didn't REALLY get what we wanted.
Anyone considering this area - I would stay away for the market here to crash (may never happen) - right now it is still significantly overpriced.

Re: Chase $900 Checking + Savings Bonus
How long do we need to keep the accounts open after receiving the $900 bonus? When can we close them? Six months. Where is that stated? No where in the paperwork I received did it give a number of months. I know in other promotions ($600 one) they list 6 months, but in the $900 one, the 6 month language isn't there, so please provide a link or other details to that requirement. I read it in the small print somewhere. You can do whatever you want if you don't believe me. I don't plan on taking my money out before the 6 months which is about about Fourth of July. That's why I'm asking, where did you see it ? I don't see it in any of the paperwork I have. It was clearly written into the earlier $600 offerings, but I am seeing nothing for the ...

I am not letting the company of the hook.humblecoder wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 9:22 am The recruiter completely dropped the ball on this one, wasting both the OP's time and the company's time.
I actually say they are more to blame.
They knew what the OP's current compensation was and still had him come onsite.
At least the recruiter was doing this because of the commission.
What is the company's excuse? Stupidity?
