Re: Incorrect medical billing sent to collection. What should I do?
I could be mistaken, but I thought that because medical billing fraud is so rampant and pervasive, it will no longer be part of credit reports. I know some of the credit reports and/ or credit agencies no longer penalize low outstanding medical bills. This is NOT because of "medical billing fraud". More because there are SO MANY folks who don't pay their outstanding medical bills. There are A LOT of consumers who just don't pay their medical bills. This totally misrepresents the situation. The problem is that medical billing offices actively and deliberately engage in fraud, and amongst other things they have been using the threat of destroying someone's credit to blackmail and extort people in paying fake and fraudulent medical ...

Re: Incorrect medical billing sent to collection. What should I do?
OP, you can try calling the medical billing office to see if they will completely undo the damage. But you can be absolutely certain it was not an innocent mistake, so you should never trust them.
Otherwise try this forum.

They will know how to fight back, and depending what infractions may have occurred, you may be able recover a few thousand in penalties/compensation.

We also started from the bonus offer page, and a day or two later, asked about it, were told there was no bonus, but they would see what they could do, then a bit later they added it manually. I've noticed other glitches on their website, so there seems to be a pattern here or general unreliability.student wrote:I did use the link from their website directly. Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses
In an effort to get bonuses, I opened an account with etrade today. However, my experience so far is negative. During the account opening process, I was ask to set up an external account. I set up my checking account. Afterwards, I decided to add my online savings account. It says for new customer, I have to wait 60 days for my protection. I chatted with them and the CS person said this is policy. I complained about there was no warning at the initial page. Well, most of my money is with the online savings account. I guess I need to do a 2-step process to go from online savings to checking to etrade. I wasn't happy but I can tolerate it. Since I was chatting with him, I asked him about the bonuses. He said there was no promotion that I was...

Re: Any issues with rollovers from Fidelity to Vanguard?
^^ To me the big issue is when leaving a 401k (or 401a, 403b, 457b etc) are you forced to go to cash, or can you transfer in kind. I started a thread about this here.
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=214709
One suggestion seems to be to move to an IRA in the same company (then maybe later move out of that) as that seems a safer step, and more likely to use in-kind transfers.

Re: Best HSA (2017)
I looked at both HSA Authority and SelectAccount (went for the latter, due to wanting a specific fund). Both are investor friendly, low cost, (unlike Health Savings Administrator and HealthEquity which have big wrap fees), with some Vanguard funds. You do not have to keep $1,000 uninvested, as you can withdraw it for medical costs. Also you can let your employer send deposits to their chosen HSA, then transfer them to your chosen HSA. So what happens when the balance goes under $1,000? Extra fee? Angry letter? Nothing? Really the $1,000 minimum is the only thing that's holding me back from SelectAccount. Nothing. It's HSA Bank, I believe, that charges you for dipping below ~$5,000. For many others, the balance is required to buy investment...

Re: Best HSA (2017)
I am not seeing HSA Authority being discussed on this thread. I plan to be opening an account as soon as I get my next employer contribution. No fees for the bank account, and just $36 annually for the mutual fund account. The other option that looks very compelling is SelectAccount, which is $30 annually but requires a minimum $1,000 balance in the bank account. It does have a Schwab brokerage option once you hit $10K. I get my employer deposits quarterly, so the one transaction per year with Saturna is a dealbreaker, plus knowing myself I will want to periodically rebalance. Does anyone know if withdrawals at Saturna also cost $24.95 per transaction? I don't plan on making withdrawals, but you never know if a big expense comes up. I look...

Re: Credit Card that lists running balance online
What the OP wants to see, e.g. if there are charges $5,$20,$12,$32,etc, is $5=$5 $5+$20=$25 $5+$20+$12=$37 $5+$20+$12+$32=$69 etc However I would like further clarification from the OP, as the issue is somewhat more complicated than it may first appear: What order do you want the transactions listed in? You might initiate the transactions in some chronological order, but the chronological order the merchants submit them might be different, and the chronological order of processing might be different still. Do you want the running totals with respect to each of these items? Do you want it to start at zero for each billing cycle, or should it carry the previous, not yet paid balances? Re: Do you hold your VG mutual funds with VG Group or VG Brokerage?
I took a quick look at the longer one but it was not really answering what I was thinking about. It listed the purported benefits as: * Hold your Vanguard mutual funds, ETFs, and other brokerage securities in the same account. * Use a simpler online process to buy and sell mutual funds and securities. * Sell securities and immediately use the proceeds to buy Vanguard mutual funds—no more four-day wait. * Get a single tax statement for your tax filing convenience. I don't trade often, so most of that would not be of any value and I can honestly say I hate the VBS 1099s, way too complicated and hard to read. I guess my thinking was more along the lines of the advantages of insurance and possibly custodianship, e.g. in what circumstances woul...

Re: Any issues with rollovers from Fidelity to Vanguard?
The number one danger in any transfer is being forced to cash, and being out of the market. Transfer in kind whenever possible, but I realize sometimes it's just not possible, in which case you want to minimize time out, maybe break into smaller chunks, and try to forsee any screwups before they happen. Why is this a big deal? So what if you're out of the market for a few days, or even a couple of weeks? It is the biggest deal in most investors' investing life. I cannot fathom why you would need to ask that question, but okay, I'll bite. It is huge risk and slightly negative expected reward. It's a terrible situation to be in. You could miss a market runup and literally lose a year's salary. It's a catastrophe. It's the same reasoning why ...

Re: Should you wait until the due date to pay credit card balance?
^ If you don't like the dates on your monthly cycle, you can very easily change them to something more convenient (with almost all, not all, card issuers). There's no need to go through contortious payment schemes just to work around inconvenient dates. Also, no matter what (regardless of how you pay balances), you need to monitor all open accounts for unauthorized activity, and you certainly should at least check ASAP after the statement close (which takes a couple of minutes once per month (per card)). The basics workings of credit card billing and payment are pretty simple. I'm not sure why someone would choose to operate in a fog of ignorance on this topic. I know they say "ignorance is bliss" but I think it adds hassle and ri...

Re: Any issues with rollovers from Fidelity to Vanguard?
I had Fidelity mess up a transfer from TIAA to Fidelity, so I have less confidence in them than many here (and it involved being forced to cash, so being out of the market is the big issue).

Transfer in kind whenever possible, but I realize sometimes it's just not possible, in which case you want to minimize time out, maybe break into smaller chunks, and try to forsee any screwups before they happen.
For transferring out of Fidelity, I wonder if it's best to first go to Fidelity IRA as a stepping stone. Maybe you could have moved in kind (and had pre/post tax separated correctly). Then move from there. That's what I plan to do with my Fidelity 403b.

Re: Has the "bond bubble" caused you to change your allocation?
Some time ago, I saw the Vanguard target retirement funds, and thought I'd use the glide path as a model (using the actual funds I have available in workplace retirement plans). But I haven't reduced my stock holding after all, and have kept it high. I'm holding out until bonds look better. I'm also gambling that I'll reach enough to early retire with my risky allocation. (I would shift a chunk to fixed income, for safety, just before pulling the plug on the job, but the risk is that stocks drop before I have enough, then I have to work longer.)
So yes, the unpalatability of bonds, is affecting my allocation (actually affecting my previously intended glide path).

Hello, Last week I opened an account with Credit Karma and something that caught my attention is how Credit Karma gives probabilities for getting approved for various credit cards. Does anyone have feedback on how accurate these assessments are? Two cards Credit Karma said I have a "very good" probability of being approved for are American Express' Blue Cash Preferred and Blue Cash Everyday. Interesting enough, either of these cards I could benefit from since the highest cashback card I can use now for supermarkets is USAA's 2.5% Limitless Visa. It is an very well known fact that they are totally unreliable . Ignore them completely. They do get a kickback from the CCCs so they have an incentive to encourage traffic. CK is good fo...

Why don't you at least try to understand the several explanations that have already been made? It's your choice what to do, but at least it would help you to understand some credit card basics.
For each credit card, do you actually know the statement close date, and payment due date? That's somewhere to start.

At what point does it make sense to buy the Target fund components in their individual admiral form? I think the discussion centers around workplace retirement plans, where people simply don't have those options. I saw this ^^^ comment, but missed this one: VVV Finally, that makes sense. So this is just a function of Vanguard's cost structure and costs incurred. The most significant problems the OP has described cannot be solved by storming out of Vanguard in a huff. If they executed unauthorized transactions they need to correct it internally. Moving funds out will preclude any chance of correction. I'm waiting to hear clarification from the OP because I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around what actually is going on here.

Re: Should you wait until the due date to pay credit card balance?
I think the bigger question is whether or not you're able to get interest or dividends on your money. Hopefully, all of your accounts are earning at least something (yes, I know that interest rates have been low, but money is money and what you do now will probably continue on when interest rates ultimately rise). Step back and ask yourself what your goals are. If it is to put yourself on a tight budget and control spending, then you might very well pay as you go with each purchase. Remember, some people actually cut up credit cards and pay cash with everything. However, if you're interested in making money on your money, then pay as little as possible until it's required. Personally, I hate giving any entity interest-free loans (of course...

My suggestion is to not buy a new car that you're soon going to find out you don't like soon after the deal is finalized. Do your due diligence. The reason for this advice is that it is very financially expensive to buy an unwanted new car.
ETA: On the other hand, if there is an actual flaw to be fixed, then insist it be fixed. But if it's simply buyers regret, then you may be out of luck.

Re: How to transfer out of vanguard?
Nope, they liquidated all of my accounts... My roth of over 180k and my other ira which was a rollover of over 100k itself... all to prime money market . This was done without a single confirmation, call, email, or postal mail. Well, for perspective, Fidelity did this precise thing to me -- despite my written letter of instruction and two recorded phone calls specifically confirming with them that all would transfer in kind. I lost a few $K in the time it took to get back into those identical vehicles. After a lot of time and effort (and their eventual review of my phone transcripts and LOI), they reversed the transactions and I was no longer out the $. Not sure it was worth the many, many hours of angry post-hoc interaction and documentat...

Now I reassess. The article is just clickbait trolling. This thread is just one of those threads started by a clickbait/troll article. It's pointless and should be shut down.PFInterest wrote:I usually enjoy Carl Richard's The Sketch Guy.

Re: How to transfer out of vanguard?
What's the incident? I'm sort of skeptical of your agenda, since this is your first post. Most new-timers post here for advice before proceeding. Mr Gordon, Im usually not one to go rant on a post, and feel that it does nothing to the question involved... But since everyone was curious: Since you wish to know... I recently switched jobs due to having a temporary job while i was in college... During that time, i had a 401k which was being funded to the employer match. Upon my leaving the company in march, i was fully vested in my 401k. Two days ago, vanguard decided to change that 401k to a traditional ira. Ok right, just switch my TSM from one to the other. Nope, they liquidated all of my accounts... My roth of over 180k and my other ira w...

^^ @Palatineman
I meant how much time had elapsed since your previous application, i.e. the one before you most recent application from which you did get a card?

They've definitely tightened up (after previously giving away bonuses too easily). How much time had elapsed since your previous application and new card with them?Palatineman wrote:I pretty much have a cc with them all.
I have an 840 Credit Report Score. Applied to Barclays, Wells Fargo, BOA all approved at an additional $62K with now a current limit of $172K for all my cards, due to the bonus offers.
For some reason Capital One rejected my application and I already have 2 credit cards with them.

I think the discussion centers around workplace retirement plans, where people simply don't have those options.ClevrChico wrote:At what point does it make sense to buy the Target fund components in their individual admiral form? It looks like doing that for a couple of my IRA's would save a few hundred dollars in expenses annually.

Re: How do you reinvest dividends in a mutual fund at E*Trade?
Sure, but it's an interesting topic to discuss, including the general aspects of large investing firms not serving investors well, and also the aspects of the various pitfalls of brokerage transfer bonus chasing, and it's also interesting to survey the forum's experiences.kaneohe wrote:I totally get where you're coming from re: random CSRs but I bet if you went for a majority vote (2 out of 3) by calling 3x, I bet you'd have*3!4!/5! wrote:[.........................

your answer by now. If not enough confidence , you could go 3/5 and beyond that, maybe you should go elsewhere where you could have some confidence.

Re: 403(b) Plan Detective: Where do I find the "hidden" fees?
Since you have tickers, e.g. VITSX, you can use public information to figure out exactly what the price should be, you can see that your contributions (and dividend reinvestments) are buying exactly the right number of new shares, and you should see fees explicitly subtracted (and $79/yr is okay), so there's really nowhere to hide stuff. (If an account has proprietary funds with no public ticker, it's harder to verify.)
I suppose they could mess around with the timing of when your payroll contributions are credited, though I would think there are rules about that.

Re: Is Amazon Prime worth it?
Having read through the thread, I'm really curious about a number of people claiming that there's better value elsewhere. Or even, the regular locations, which I assume means brick and mortar. I know people buy different things and agree Amazon is flat out a bad place to buy some things, particularly bulky (diapers) or heavy in my experience. But I'd curious where are they shopping and what are they buying that other outlets consistently offer better pricing (including shipping) than Amazon? I get that sites like Jet can be cheaper, but in my experience have been like hitting an outlet where availability is hit and miss. So I'm really curious, what's being bought and from where? I'd say that if you go to a random supermarket, and pick a ra...
