Re: Comfort level with Credit Card Balance

Just wondering what's everyone's comfort level is with their credit card balance. Zero comfort level. Any outstanding balance at all on any of my credit cards makes me itch. I check the card balances daily, and pay them off two to three times a week. Excessive, perhaps, but that's just me. Same here. As soon as a charge posts, I pay it. I like to see zero balances on my credit card accounts. I cringe a little when I see my husband’s cc balances. He waits for paper bills and pays with paper checks. I’m not sure I understand the point of paying charges as soon as they post in an effort to have a zero balance. It seems counterintuitive to the whole convenience aspect of having a credit card in the first place. With the exception of the paper ...

My husband is/was (he doesn’t go out as much anymore) a kayak fisherman and introduced me to it some years ago. We’d go up and down the California coast to various fishing spots/kayak fishing events. Pretty fun stuff when I was younger not as fun the older I get. BUT, it’s a fairly inexpensive hobby/leisure activity that is good exercise, gets you out into nature and has the possibility of feeding you too. Win win win.

On the weekends, I am usually up by 6:30. And I look forward to nap time on the weekends (an hour or two before 3 pm).

Re: Does anyone use Imperfect Produce?

We used to subscribe to Imperfect Produce, but only for a couple of months. It was okay and prices were fair (little bit cheaper than Raley’s). We didn’t always receive what we opted for or would receive one item and six of another. The greens and carrots never lasted very long. It’s worth it if you want the challenge of cooking what comes in the box or you don’t have time to shop for produce or have the need for many sturdy boxes. For me, the novelty wore off pretty quickly.

Re: Door Dash: Has anyone used?

I used it once while traveling, but likely would not use the service again. It cost more than twice as much to use the service than to pick food up ourselves. The only reason I know this is because the delivery person left the receipt in the bag. Order totaled $46 on Door Dash receipt I received via email; food ordered and and picked up by Door Dash at restaurant cost $22 and change. And the menu items on Door Dash don’t always match menu items in restaurant (delivery person ordered different item for me than what was listed on Door Dash menu because Door Dash menu item was not available at restaurant).

Great for convenience, terrible for your wallet.

Baked pan de sal and ensemada (Filipino breads) this past week.

Messed up the pan de sal which turned out like dense hockey pucks because I didn’t let them rise three times (started batch too late in the day and didn’t want to wait for full second and third rises). Am redoing another batch today because I didn’t get fluffy bread craving satisfied. Can’t wait for a proper cheese and calamansi marmalade sandwich.

Ensemada, I subbed coconut milk for evaporated milk which made them a little flatter but more delicate than usual.

Re: Good Dad, Bad Dad [pay for son's driving expenses (or not)]

I don’t think you’re being miserly at all. Practical, yes. A freshman commuting from family home where bus and biking are reasonable options makes a personal vehicle unnecessary. I spent my first three years in college without a car. My last year in school, my parents let me use one of their cars because I had two part-time jobs and was carrying more than twenty units a semester. They paid insurance, I paid for gas/car maintenance. If your kid wants his license, he should pony up for the costs of getting a license (I had to). I don’t think it’s unreasonable for a parent to expect their kid to pay for things they want (versus needs). Lots of folks have grown up that way, myself included. It’s an important lesson that needs to be learned.

Miller Lite when money is tight.

Homebrewing is best because you can make whatever you want, but it is not cost effective if you take your time to make it into account unless you do several batches at once. My max is four five-gallon batches in one day. And even then, I don’t think I break even (time plus cost of supplies).

Mead is looking more and more appealing these days. Less time to make, same reward.

Please check, with the executive membership, if you did not get back the $55, they give you the balance. Let us say, you go the rebate of $30, show that at the customer service, they will give you the difference, $55 - $30 = $25. Really? Then that changes everything. Thank you for that info. YB I expect that they would only do this once. When they do this they would also cancel your executive membership and revert you to the gold membership. They don’t make it easy to get the difference refunded. Attempt #1 You are not allowed to downgrade your membership at checkout. Re: Visiting SAN FRANCISCO

Tu Lan for cheap Vietnamese food in SoMa. Supposedly Julia Child liked their food. Anything with the imperial roll is tasty.

Golden Gate Park is full of neat things—bison?, arboretum, etc.

Ferry building, oysters and people watching. Ferry to Oakland and have a drink at the First & Last Chance Saloon or to Alameda to go to the pinball museum.

Ton Kiang for soup dumplings and dim sum.

Two days is not much time as there is a lot to do.

And if you are into seafood, mariscos if you don’t have it where you live.

Re: Choosing which room to sleep in

It’s funny (ironic not ha ha) when I say it (woman), it’s sexist and have to be corrected many times over. When a man says it, crickets chirp. Don’t believe me, google it. Even Taylor L. agrees (not his exact words, but the gist is the same; see his post earlier in thread). People have been objecting to this statement for years on this board. Here is a thread from 2.5 years ago https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=169757 and I would guess someone called "sleepking" is a guy. Only 'mouses' can tell you if the reason the reply was written was because you were a woman. You can assume that. I think the odds are more likely it just happened to be at the end of the thread when they logged in. No real way of telling (after a...

Re: Choosing which room to sleep in

People often say on this board, happy wife happy life. And it seems to be true (I am a wife). I don’t know if betting is allowed, but I’d bet ten bucks no matter what she decides, she’s gonna change her mind. You just gotta roll with it. And every time I see that patronizing sexism, I have to remind myself that grinding teeth results in dental bills. Yes, it should be “happy family, happy life”. In response to someone who is being controlling, thoughtless, neurotic, etc. (Guilty as charged.) I do think it’s fair to say if your family is happy, that you tend to be happier yourself. Nope. Having a happy wife (or family) might be necessary to be happy but it alone isn't sufficient for a happy life. If I write "My wife is super hap...

Re: Choosing which room to sleep in

My wife and I are moving to a new place that has 2 bedrooms, both with attached full bathrooms. 1 room is bigger than the other. When we first viewed the place, we thought of using the smaller room as a home office. As time went on, we started talking about how we could maybe put some home gym equipment as well. Maybe even a small couch and TV? No, not enough space for all 3 ideas. Hmm. Last night I suggested making the smaller room the “sleeping” room, and using the bigger room as the “activity” room; in the smaller room, there is ample space for our bed and who needs the extra space when sleeping, right? Wife looked aghast, and I can’t figure out why. Can anyone help? People often say on this board, happy wife happy life. And it s...

Re: What frugal thing did you do today?

Went on a mini-vacation to a place where hotel was 50% off, bought groceries from my local market (instead of their local general store) and had a blast beachcombing and being lazy for three days on the CA coast. Best $500 I’ve spent in a while.
