Re: Golden Ratio (also in Bogleheads logo) Fibonacci
off the top of my head, those irrational numbers aren't found as often in life. e is all about naturally occurring continuous compounding growth phenomena, all around us including money matters :-) It is in fact the most relevant of the 3 as far as financial matters are concerned! The famous rule o...

Re: Buying taxable at Vanguard: 1 lot or 2?
I don't see any reason to add SpecID/lot information to that spreadsheet. Vanguard will be tracking everything for you now, no need for replication busywork. In the bad old days, custodians did NOT track your basis so I used a spreadsheet to keep track. Reasons not to auto-reinvest: 1) more small l...

Re: Buying taxable at Vanguard: 1 lot or 2?
What are these lots, and how do they affect things? Can someone please provide a summary of the concern, or pointers I can read about this? I've just started investing in vtsax, and in general with Vanguard. I'd like to know if there's a future complication I can avoid now. We're talking about taxa...

Re: Advice about bond funds in a taxable account
If you are in a high tax bracket (TB), say 33% (but don't forget NIIT etc) you can calculate the equivalent "taxable return" of a tax exempt bond/fund by dividing its return by (1-TB). In AZ you may also be able to adjust this formula by the percentage of AZ obligations held by a national...

Re: Advice about bond funds in a taxable account
What is your tax bracket? Vanguard doesn't offer an AZ fund, so I would recommend munis in a 28% or higher tax bracket, and it's probably close to break-even in a 25% bracket if you aren't in some phase-out such as the child tax credit. We are in the high-tax bracket (39.6%). I also noticed no AZ f...

Advice about bond funds in a taxable account
Like many, I've been reading this forum for a while, time to jump in with my questions. I've ~500k USD to invest in a taxable account. Have already opened one at Vanguard, and started moving money into it. We are mid-40s, married filing jointly in the high-tax bracket, and don't expect to use this m...

What are these reporting requirements, when do they kick in? Can you pl elaborate? I'm thinking of doing something with my old employer's 401k as well.mattsm wrote:Only downside is extra reporting requirements once you reach a certain balance.

Re: Personal Capital - Net Worth?
How do you guys feel about providing Personal Capital with their bank account logins, brokerage logins, etc. I tried to put in some stuff manually, and found it difficult. And for now, I'm not comfortable giving them my account info.
