Re: Windows 10 very slow (2 year old Dell Desktop)

I will say as both a Windows (Work) and Mac/Chrome (home) user fully invested in all 3 ecosystems: Apple or Chromebook would the smart way to go for the majority of home users. Apple computing is generally considered more expensive, but this is not factual if you look deeper. Their device contain co...

Re: Pay $120/year for iCloud or switch to Google Photos

You can access your photos from any device with a functional web browser. Photo sharing is easier. My wife can see all of the pictures I take, I can see all of hers. You can setup rules like only share pictures that you each take of your kids, or whatever. You can easily stop syncing temporarily. U...

Re: How well did you predict your income growth?

Government employee with scheduled step increases and contract negotiated COLA adjustements.

Did not account for the increasing cost and more sharing of the healthcare plan expenses. It seems to eat the annual COLA adjustment to the penny.

Re: Mazda CX-5 - seat comfort question?

I'm well over 6' tall and could not abide in the CX-5 or the CR-V due to seat comfort. The Equinox was passable. The Escape is the most comfortable and surprisingly nicer than I expected. The CX-5 was also overall poor ergonomically. The entire seating position relative to the steering wheel and ped...

Re: iPhone 11 - Anyone get a dud camera?

I am hearing all these things, though not a photographer. My only reply is that I've lived in the same place for years and would rarely have a "bad photo" to get rid of no matter what time of day or lighting situation. It's hard to get a "good photo" with the iPhone 11 Pro and I have been taking a ...

Re: iPhone 11 - Anyone get a dud camera?

Not enough light. It shot at 1/29 seconds which is not fast enough to freeze motion, so of course the kid is going to be blurry. The iso is 1300, which is going to create a lot of noise, notice the pixelation. I'm not familiar enough with the camera options on the phone, but i do know my camera set...

iPhone 11 - Anyone get a dud camera?

We got 2 new iPhone 11 Pro in the family and took them to a small get together this weekend. On review of the photos, we did not shoot anything worth keeping. Our typical is to have too many good pictures which we agonize over what to delete. It was a well lit home, we visit often, with recessed lig...

Re: Computer Monitor, what to get? (So many options)

Please avoid the Dell UltraWide series if you're using USB-C from a Mac. Do a quick Google search on it, you'll find numerous sites. I also have firsthand experience. It will not charge the computer uninterrupted, it wakes the computer every 10 minutes with a chime. It's a known issue that Dell has...

Re: PC Build Thread 2020

This evening I received an email from Dell -- curiously sent Saturday evening -- informing me of a delay in delivery of a monitor I had ordered in late August. The website listing had indicated a delivery date by September 22 (2020). I decided I could wait a few weeks for delivery and therefore did...

Re: Best shoes for running?

I like New Balance 990 series. They are made in the USA and come in wide/narrow sizes. Expensive, but do last a long time.

I don't run in my oldest pair, 12 years old I wore daily for years. I'm only active in pairs that are about a year or two old.

Great time to buy a Mac.

Go for it. You don't know how long you'll be waiting, and there is *always* something better coming out "soon"

How consequential is $5000 for you?

If you're otherwise comfortable or wealthy, my advice would be:

Friendship > Money.

Re: Grocery store didn't tell me Shingrix was $160

I can't tell you how many doctors forms I sign that tell me anything the insurance doesn't cover will become my full responsibility.

It's just the way it is. They do the best they can, bill insurance, and bill me later. Usually they're correct.

Re: Reimbursed Mileage IRS / Issue

Maybe you could convince them to accept a digitally signed and encrypted email? It is 2020, and while we don’t have flying cars, we have those. If they are sincerely concerned about waste, having someone personally print and hand deliver documents seems like a true waste of government resources. It...

Re: Reimbursed Mileage IRS / Issue

Maybe it won’t work because of the urgency, but at my company it’s encouraged to do Fedex overnight with early morning delivery to our smaller offices within the state, even one at about 60 miles from us. Check with the client to see if it’s ok to receive all this paperwork by 9 am the next morning...

Re: Reimbursed Mileage IRS / Issue

I think the argument is you took the job in the original location and the place that requires you to be there in person to drop off documents is across the street from that place, so it is no different than your commute was before — and now COvid is letting you save on that commute x number of time...

Nowhere. They are no longer deductible.

Yes. Since employee expenses are no longer deductible the rest of the details are irrelevant.

Probably. You can read this publication: https://www.irs.gov/publications/p463#en_US_2019_publink100033914 Simplifying your situation 1mi x 2x x5days/per week x 50weeks x .575/mi will get you about a $288 deduction. Hope the paperwork is worth it! LOL - I can get the 1 mile round trip reimbursed th...

Re: Reimbursed Mileage IRS / Issue

You cannot claim mileage expenses for traveling between home and work. Maybe there's a COVID exception I'm not aware of, but doubtful. I do understand that, but I am actually going to a building where I don't work. It's a block or so down the street. I normally did this from my office, but the offi...

Reimbursed Mileage IRS / Issue

I have been working from home since March due to COVID. My office building is temporarily closed, though I can gain access if requested 24 hours in advance with written approval from the director. My commute was about 45 miles one way. There's a government building across the street from my office w...
