Re: How to get company 401K matching after maxed out

I am changing jobs but I have already maxed out my 401K contributions for this year. Is there a way to get the 6% that my new company matches on the 401K even though I wont contribute to it (because I have already maxed out my contributions in the current job). Check with HR they may contribute the match even if you put nothing in the 401k. My last company did so its posable.

Or, asking a different question, what if I contribute 6% in the new job just to get the match, what happens with this extra money that I am contributing in the 401K after it is maxed out?
If you have maxed out already at your last employer you are maxed out and should not put any more in a 401k

Just open a taxable account and put as much as you can in that after the tax-deferred is maxed. It is nice to have a large amount it taxable in retirement, gives you choices.

one thing you may want to consider is just put all new contributions into the S&P 500 and rebalance Bonds once a year. That way you can take advantage of the stock's up and downs.

Re: 401k Rollover Advice

Unread post by TwoIdenticalIndexes Hi, I will be leaving my job soon, and I have had some difficulty understanding the details on rolling my 401k into my IRA / whether it is worthwhile. I think it may be clearing if I give my own specifics: 1. I am young, not close to retirement Keep working and save 2. My 401k has some admin fees that I’d like to avoid and the user interface is very difficult to deal with. I’m open to reasons not to transfer though. The funds in the plan are fairly good. What fund and what is the fee what would you transfer it into 3. I have a Roth IRA currently, no traditional IRA, though I’m happy to make one if that will help Maybe, maybe not you may want to transfer it into your new employer 401K 4. My 401k is about 45...

If you are married with 2 kids, this could be

two 401k accounts (bonds can be placed here) If you both have 401ks if not see next line
two IRA accounts (bonds can be placed here) a Roth may be better down the line. If your wife is a SAHM a tIRA may lower your taxes
two 529 accounts up to an amount that will sufficiently fund college the fund can be transferred between kids
one HSA account to invest in stocks
one taxable account Yes but all accounts would be thought of as one account

First, get your 401k up to 10-15%(one present a year to get you there is ok). Next invest is Roth to the max. Next investment taxable VTSAX or the ETF.

I had lunch with a guy who took the Megacorp buy out retirement plan when I did.

He said, "I pulled all my money that was in the market out in the beginning of March and put it into a money market."

I said "I didn't just let it ride and have made more than where it was in March before the crash. When are you going to get back in?"

he said " Next crash"

Since you asked I will give my opinion. Yes, max out your Roth and aggressive life strategy is fine. Next, take any extra money you have and put it into a taxable VTSAX. Get a combination of both up to 15-20% of your salary and you will be good.

scsu74 wrote I am married, but she doesn't work. Would a spousal IRA still be an option? I have a state based pension, no 401ks. Would a taxable account even be taxable with no income for tax purposes? Because neither you nor your wife will have earned income, you will not be eligible to make new contributions to a traditional IRA or to a Roth IRA. If you currently have a traditional IRA, you may find it beneficial to convert that to a Roth IRA, a little bit each year. In particular, I would suggest converting at least enough to reach the full amount of your standard deduction (which would incur zero income tax). If you currently have funds in a taxable 403/457, then it may also be converted to a Roth of some sort year-by-year. I don't kno...

you will figure out over time what to do with your taxable funds (most likely move all to VTSAX or the VTF).

But what I would suggest is to put at least as much as the match in your 401k and then as you get cost of living adjustments/rases each year up your % in your 401K by 1/2 of the adjustment.

Retired engineer from the energy industry. I read that the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena CA is one of the best design school in the world. You could also contact them - http://www.artcenter.edu/about/contact.html - and ask for their advice on a longer term path.
As a practicing Industrial designer Art Center is a good school but for car design, not product design. I went to a school that trained you in both product and car design.

I was accepted into Art Center and turned them down because I preferred product design and the cost.

I just retired from 37 years as an Industrial designer. CAD is absolutely needed now in ID preferably Solid Works. Solid Works (or other CAD programs ) then can be imported into Key Shot which is the main rendering package used in ID for presentations. Other programs I used a lot Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator mostly to clean up renderings and graphic layout for presentations and quick 2D illustrations.
