Two Weeks New Orleans in March

My girlfriend and I are flying into New Orleans for two weeks the beginning of March. We thought we would spend about 5 days in New Orleans, and then rent a car and explore the surrounding areas such as Baton Rouge. We are old folks, but still can walk a few miles.

We would appreciate ideas on where to stay and what to do.

Thanks.

We are selling our 2000 Camry LE. Nothing wrong with the car, but we bought a Tesla Model 3. The driving experience of the cars is so different, that if one can afford the new car, especially a Tesla, I would buy the new car.

H&R Block Deluxe Prints Part of Page, Mac

Hi Bogleheads,

I downloaded H&R Block Deluxe to my Mac with Intel processor, OS Monterey. When I try to print, or save as PDF, I only get part of the page, the upper left hand corner with very large print. Brother printer on Wifi network. No printing problems otherwise. I have tried scale change and other format changes, and spent an hour on the phone with H&R Block support. My girlfriend with OS Sierra has no problem printing.

Any suggestions? I am certain I am missing something, probably simple. Thanks.

Re: Help! Lot size is wrong. What should I do?

I always had a survey before I bought a property. I didn’t mind paying for it if the seller didn’t have a current sealed survey. The title insurer may find there is a title problem. I would probably consult an attorney that handles real estate matters. I have always had an attorney represent me when I have bought property. I wanted to know easements and rights. I have seen cases where neighbors had built or put walls up on adjacent properties. Also, I placed property in a trust and would not do that without an attorney reviewing the purchase.

Best of luck.

I had this situation. I had two patios. I had smokers on both sides. One neighbor's patio was littered with cigarette butts. They smoked constantly. I moved.

When we took a cruise to Alaska we had a balcony. The air was pristine and the scenery spectacular. On the adjacent balcony was a cigar smoker. Instead of sitting on the balcony in our robes, we dressed and went up on deck.

Not much else you can do. Smokers smoke.

Re: Tesla battery day.

Tesla has a unit that designs their own ARM computer chips. They have integrated the electronics to such a degree that they do not have discrete IGBT’s, or the power switching units in the inverter controller electronics. Can you expand on what's being used instead of discrete IGBTs? I'd think either IGBT modules (multiple IGBTs and diodes in a module, which isn't new at all) or IGBTs with drivers in a single package, which also isn't new. I would hope for the superchargers, at least, they've been using Silicon Carbide. I don't know if they are, but it's such an obvious choice, I don't know how they couldn't be. For drive units, either IGBTs or SiC might be appropriate. I don't know how much power they use. An in between technology is GAN,...

Re: Tesla battery day.

Yesterday confirmed Tesla is years ahead of the other auto and battery manufacturers. I think this is because of Elon Musk’s ideas and his management style which was evident at yesterdays presentation. He is fault tolerant of the people he works with as long as they innovate, and work toward the important goal. This can best be seen by the software in both Tesla and SpaceX. Volkswagen and Boeing’s stumbling blocks have been faulty software. Musk understood from the start that if the software didn't work, the whole project would fail. Because of this he built a simple elegant software platform and team that are very nimble and can innovate rapidly. The heat pump unit in the Model Y is simple, compact and efficient. Musk was asked if Tesla wa...

Thank you all for the replies. I plan to stay at a Residence Inn initially, then rent for a year. I will keep my condo in Florida until I have made a decision. I have looked at over 55 communities online. I would only buy a one story or a house with a bedroom on the ground floor. An elevator building would probably be ok, but I would need an electric car charging station. My condo in Florida is really a small house with a garage, which has allowed me to go outside without riding in an elevator, so I gravitate to an individual house. Also the condo community takes care of the lawn and all of the exterior maintenance, and there are lots facilities including tennis courts and a pool. I did not know about melanoma in the Pacific Northwest. I wi...

Thinking of moving Seattle or Vancouver, WA

Hi Bogleheads,

I am thinking of moving to the Pacific Northwest. I am currently living in South Florida, but after years of snorkeling and the beach I have become a regular visitor to the dermatologist.

Age early 70's, retired, like hiking and bicycling. I have one more move in me. Where I settle will be the final move.

Seattle vs Vancouver? What area of Seattle? What area of Vancouver? Would like to spend up to $650K and be able to bicycle or walk from house. Do not mind driving to shopping. Buying electric car.

Thoughts. Suggestions?

Thank you.

I too am concerned about inflation, but there are too many variables to make a workable model. The Fed and money supply, national debt, how long social distancing will be necessary, and what the new normal will be like when the pandemic is over. Some thoughts. The pandemic will play out roughly from January, 2020 to June, 2021,with most likely several peaks as social distancing guidelines change? Peaks will be geographic. Half the US population or 160 million people will have positive antibodies in their blood for the coronavirus? 1.6 million people will die? See CIDRAP. Online commerce will accelerate, in many ways we cannot predict. New businesses will accelerate, such as self driving delivery vans. Less traffic on the roads may help this...

Tax Loss Harvesting and Vang Total World Stk Indx

I own Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares VTSAX, and Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund Admiral Shares VTIAX, which are about 80% and 20% of my equities. I have stopped dividend and capital gain reinvestment to avoid a wash sale, and plan to tax loss harvest and invest the dividends and capital gains in Vanguard Total World Stock Index Fund ETF Shares VT, or the mutual fund Vanguard Total World Stock Index Fund Admiral Shares (VTWAX).

Is there a downside to moving to a global equity index fund, and which should I choose, the ETF or the mutual fund?

Thank you.

Re: Luxury car recommendations?

Consider a Tesla Model 3, about $45,000 well equipped, or a used Model S, about the same. You will have to put a charger in your garage. I drove the Model 3 a few weeks ago. It has instant acceleration and very good steering. A little more road noise than I liked. Very comfortable, but no leather.

Tesla’s website has used Model S’s. I have not driven the car, but I have ridden in them. They are very quiet, and have leather interiors. They are a relatively large and wide car. They have an optional air suspension that gives an exceptional ride. If I was in the market for a new car I would buy a Tesla. If you do not have a Tesla store near you it makes it difficult to test drive the cars, unless you know someone who owns one.

Automatic Swimming Pool Filler?

Hi Bogleheads,

My friend in Phoenix has a 30 year old swimming pool that has to be manually filled weekly to maintain the water level. There is a hose bib on the side of the house that goes to an underground line that when opened, fills the pool from a pipe in the side of the pool. It usually takes about an hour for the pool to fill to the correct level.

She wants to go away for the summer and not worry about the pool level. Is there a reliable system that will automatically fill the pool? She has a pool service that cleans the pool weekly.

Thanks. :happy

iPad word games and Solitaire that do not track and collect data.

I like to play solitaire and word games on my iPad but I do not want to be tracked and have data collected.

I have read the privacy policy of companies such as Electronic Arts and Branium. They collect information and develop a profile of the user using “cookies, log files, pixels, web bugs, beacons, and tags.” The know the user’s device, MAC address, IMEI, geo location, IP address, and hardware. When offline the data is stored, and then transmitted to the companies when connected. They share the data with analytic companies and ad serving companies.

Does anyone know of iPad word games and card games that do not identify and track the user?

Thanks

Re: Are you finding any good values at Amazon anymore?

I order from Amazon once or twice a year. I am not Amazon Prime. I feel like I am treated like a second class citizen. The orders do not ship for 5 to 7 days. I recently bought a rain hat. I thought I would try one size smaller, but when I went to order the price had increased from $45.00 to $60.00 ten days later. Also, the price of a hard drive had increased in ten days, from $55 to $80. I was so pleased with the hard drive I wanted another one.

I ordered a pair of running shoes through Amazon on the same order from a seller. They arrived at the same time as the Amazon order.

I will order from Amazon again, but I have to monitor their prices. They go up and down.

Re: Senior citizens can lose everything [to professional guardians via court rulings]

I think the only reason some action was taken in Nevada is because the guardianship racket story went national, and the casinos, which get a lot of revenue from retired people and their Social Security checks, were worried that people would be wary of retiring in Las Vegas. My guess is that the casinos wanted action, so as usual, the low people on the totem pole got charged and the big corrupt fish were left untouched. The judge, the “guardianship commissioner” and “Shafer” are still on the job. As an aside, I am not surprised that there are corrupt physicians who for a consideration will sign that a person is incompetent, even without a good faith exam. They should also be prosecuted and lose their licenses. Unfortunately that is rare. thi...

If the USD declines relative to the currencies of the countries that issue the bonds held in the Vanguard Total International Bond Index Fund (VTABX), will currency exchange gains be negated?

From the fund prospectus:
"By entering into currency hedging transactions, the Fund may eliminate any chance to benefit from favorable fluctuations in relevant currency exchange rates. Currency hedging risk for the Fund is low."

I bought Tesla stock when I saw the design of the Tesla S. It made sense to me. The batteries were under the floor, the motor in the rear, the controller and motor unit a proven digital analog design. I also looked at Nvidia and Mobileye since they made the computer hardware and software used in the car. I liked that Tesla sold directly to the public, since cars would become autonomous and fleets of vehicles would be sold. I also looked at Solar City, since I thought the electric grid would become localized, and Solar City and Tesla had the hardware and software for this paradigm change. No car company other than Tesla had a rational vision to develop the electric car and ecosystems. Only Tesla updates the car’s operating system over a cell...

I have a few legacy utility stocks, Portland General Electric Company, POR, and Southern Company, SO. Today they are going up, like my bonds, while equities in general are declining. Where should we stay in Portland? We would like to stay near a Max line. We will get a rental car, but probably from an off airport site.

What should we see and do in the Portland area?

Where should we drive along the coast?

Where should we stay in Seattle?
