Re: Renter Forever?
I would be interested in a report from a long term home owner to see the true expenses incurred. Landscaping- either paying for a service or purchasing/maintaining equipment. Roof/Siding, updating kitchen and bath, new carpeting/floors/paint, plumber/electrician bills, etc. On top of that, if these tasks aren't enjoyable to said home owner, then an estimate of how much time they spent on chores around the home that a renter would not have to deal with.

Re: Should I Buy a Motorcycle?
I went through this thought process too. You can read my original thread here: viewtopic.php?t=196218
3 of my friends also got motorcycles around that time. 2 of them have already crashed. I decided that dirt bikes filled the desire, without the road risk. This also has a lot to do with my location, New Jersey, where there are simply too many people on the road.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is what company this was..
I know someone who works for FedEx Ground. They are contracted employees, i.e. not FedEx employees. Someone buys a 'route' and hires drivers to deliver to their route. He mentioned that his delivery recipients have almost no recourse in situations like this.

Items I buy the cheapest available product:
TV's.. nowadays, the quality on the cheapest TV's is still exceptional IMO
Furniture.. between moving/wear and tear, I have gotten exceptional deals on used furniture through Craigslist. People sell for 1/4 of what they bought it for 2 years ago.

Re: Teaching jobs
First, for every district I'm familiar with, applications are all done through the same electronic software portal through which you have to compile a 100% complete applicant profile with about 10 various attachments including resumes, cover letters, transcripts, letters of recommendation, teaching certificates, etc. BEFORE you can even apply for any jobs. This is also correct. Applying to teaching positions is not similar at all to private industry positions. Besides the attachments listed above, I have also seen writing prompts for specific topics posted in the job application that a candidate must complete. This is typically done to gauge writing ability/grammar so it needs to be very thorough. I'd be more concerned if the OP stated she...

OP, I work in an HR department for a school district. With Summer around the corner, the school districts in your area should be having Job Fairs regularly. She should start by checking if her university where she completed her MA is having one. If they don't, many states have a central website listing all upcoming fairs. A job fair will be a good opportunity to practice interviews, as well as meet with multiple districts in a short period of time. If you are able to find a job fair, make sure to have a demo lesson ready. If she is M.S. OP: if you tell us a little more, we might be able to figure out a hack. Is there a thermostat in your office, and you're just not supposed to change it? Or no thermostat? Is just your room hot or is it everyone's? There is a thermostat- locked by maintenance. It regulates temp on the entire floor. Everyone else is comfortable with the high temperatures, or silent about their discomfort. Maybe if it is wintertime, 68 downstairs during the day and 60 at night. Bedrooms 64 at night and 56 during the day. Summer time, 75 downstairs during the day and 80 at night. Bedrooms 72 at night and 77 during the day. This just goes to show you how different people are. To me, 75 is very comfortable compared to 80s and 90s outside. I can't see it needing...

I do have a USB fan running at all times. Unfortunately, it isn't enough.. My office is not well ventilated. It also doesn't help that I set my home to 69 degrees.ReadyOrNot wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2019 3:47 pm Why not a fan? There are plenty of small, quiet, effective ones; could plug into USB port, etc. Your computer probably already runs a noisier fan.
Otherwise, if you have an office refrigerator or water cooler, you could keep a cold water bottle around to cool your hands on or maybe an ice pack. Fan air over ice pack?
I think this is the option I'm going to move forward with for the time being.

One option to look into are personal cooling vests. The one I purchased was from a company called First Line Tech but there are probably quite a few other options out there these days. This might work well.. Hadn't thought of this! I've seen electrically (Peltier) cooled seats for cars and trucks, but don't know of any available for indoor use. There's a new device out that works on the same principles, but attaches to your wrist. Might be worth a try. $300. https://embrlabs.com/ I like this idea a lot, but I do feel as though I shouldn't have to spend that much money to have a normal temperature. If I was in that position, I would see a doctor and tell him (truthfully) it was interfering with my breathing, which would happen to me. It's s...

Regulate Office Temperature
Looking for advice on what to purchase..
Is there anything out there, besides a fan, that can cool down an office that does not have any windows? Our floor is kept at 75 degrees in the summer, and 76 in the winter.
I've looked into AC units that don't require a window, but they say they are best used in a dry heat environment. FWIW, I'm in NJ. I need something that isn't too loud either; but I don't mind something that requires me to empty/fill water.
Getting the floor temperature changed is not an option.
Any suggestions would be welcomed..

Degrees are for doctors/lawyers/engineers. The rest just have a piece of paper that isn't worth much unless you already have some skills to back it up. Teachers, Accountants, HR? I don't think 4 interviews from 200 apps is as uncommon as many on this board assume.. When I worked for a Casino Marketing Company, we regularly had 400+ applicants for entry level jobs. Many times it was as arbitrary as scanning the first 50 that happened to be on screen first and selecting interviews from there. It is tough to go over hundreds of applications for multiple entry level positions. We had to add extra steps to the application process to dwindle the sheer number of applicants down. Now a days with Indeed, you can apply to a position in seconds. As a...

Re: Do we have any New Jersey teachers here?
I work for HR in a NJ Public School System. In my personal experience, the most effective way would be to attend career fairs. They have large expo's during the Spring, some with over 100 schools. Brush up on your interviewing abilities, and obviously bring the necessities. Portfolio, resume, cert printout, etc. Beginning as a leave replacement is also an excellent foot in the door. We are a very large district, so when an effective leave replacement's contract is ending, they typically have a full time opening ready for them. I'm not sure how NY recruiting works, but NJ uses Applitrack. If you know a school is attending a career fair, it always looks good to have already applied to their opening on Applitrack. Moving to NJ, I'm sure you kn...

NJ/NY area, and my roommate also owns a pitbull. He got the pitbull registered as a service dog (not an emotional support dog). Service animals are a protected class and landlords cannot discriminate. I won't go into the ethics of his actions, but finding a place to rent would have been near impossible given the size of the dog. There is no legally recognized registry for service dogs, though. The registries themselves are fraudulent private services attempting to capitalize on these kinds of situations. Legally, it is not mandatory to register an animal as a service animal OR even ask for proof that said animal is a service animal: Per ADA.gov "Mandatory registration of service animals is not permissible under the ADA." https://...

Re: I need to ethically reneg on a large eBay purchase
I've had a buyer reneg on a very small purchase, so the outcome may differ.
In this situation, he was honest and said he had simply changed his mind. Since it was such a small purchase, I just reposted the item without leaving any negative feedback to the buyer. He never put up the money, so there was no $ to refund.
I'd assume if this was a purchase where you outbid other potential buyers, you can expect to receive negative feedback as a buyer. If it was a buy-it-now posting, it may be easier to back out of. Either way, your 'rating' is on the hook. If you don't use ebay frequently, this may not even be a concern to you.

I guess I'd tell you what I tell my wife. If you're on facebook, twitter, linkedIn, snapchat, instagram, you're giving your data to everyone. I'm on none of these. From public records, looking myself up (unusual last name), they got maybe 75% of the data right that they did have. The rest was either wrong and I have no idea where it came from (my occupation, other names I go by.....they don't have Jack, for example) or they mixed me up with a relative. Out of their list of things that they "could" have data for, they got maybe 20% of the listings. The rest, they had no information. No cars, income, associates, relatives were listed. To counter your point, I am registered with every single website/app you listed (facebook, snapcha...

As a renter in NJ, I agree that $750 will be difficult to find suitable living. In Northern NJ, I'm not sure you'd be able to find anything that low.
Would you oppose living with a roommate? I don't see that option on your list. If I were in your shoes, I would exhaust any and every option to move out on my own. There are multiple websites dedicated to matching roommates.
Not sure that it is feasibly, but as stated above a nice part time job with benefits would be nice. In NJ, and I know for a fact there is a huge shortage of school bus drivers.

I didn't read every single post, but note that you're speaking to some parents of children who were home-schooled.
My experience when I was younger with home-schooled peers is that yes, parents believe they are socially 'mature', but they rarely could relate to children their own age. This was true throughout all years of schooling. I'd take home-school recommendations from parents who home-schooled with a grain of salt. Just my experience.
And to think that your years in public or private school have nothing to do with 'real life' is absurd. Confrontations, group dynamics, public speaking etc. are crucial in 'real life'- and are all difficult to duplicate in a home-school curriculum.

I ended up buying my car from a sales woman who made little attempt to 'sell' me on a car. Rather just showed me around and answered questions if I had any. The rest of the time was spent just conversing over small-talk. Some people, myself included, don't like being pitched to. Just answer the few questions I have and sit back and relax

For teachers in NJ, it is not looked at as 'breaking' contract. Simply a resignation. The only difference between this and a private industry is that we hold Teachers for 60 days or until a replacement is found; this is where the contract comes into play. If they decide to not show up during the 60 day period, their teaching certification can be suspended for 1 year.

i believe Buyers no longer receive feedback, which has made it easier to leave neutral and negative feedback..
i had ordered a pair of shoes, and with an estimated delivery time of 2 weeks. 4.5 weeks passed before I received them, so I left a negative feedback. The seller refunded my shipping in return for a positive feedback. done deal.
In your situation, it depends if the seller who withdrew the item has thousands of sales or dozens. If he has thousands I would leave neutral. However, if a neutral would drastically affect his score, I would let it go. YMMV

Re: Selling a used car
I took a look at your ad.. It makes it look like you are hiding damage with the awkward camera angles. I agree with the poster above that hubcaps would be a good investment. I live in NJ, and was actually interested in this car for a friend. The ad needs a lot of work.
Edit: you also list the car as 'beige'. I would say its a Burgundy.

John Oliver did a segment on retirement funds. Searched Index funds on Google, and came across this wonderful forum.

Re: best place to hide a key
Obviously what I meant was opening the gas cap cover, and resting the keys next to the actual tank opening. I couldn't, and still can't, think of the official terminology for the 'gas cap cover' and 'tank orifice', so I left it on the wise BogleHeads to determine what I'm talking about.
To be extra cautious, in the gas tank is even better than my original hiding spot. You'd be sure to get your steps in for the day.

Earl Lemongrab,
I did not read through everyone's responses, but my absolute favorite is Diet Stewart's Orange and Cream.

Re: best place to hide a key
I used to put my key in the gas tank. Now I have a Ford, which are equipped with a Keypad Code- so my keys stay in my car.

I went for the free PDF versions as well.. Saved well over ~$1000. Some people buy music on iTunes/Amazon, some people stumble upon free versions.. You won't find many college textbook sympathizers on campus.PVW wrote: ↑Mon Jun 11, 2018 11:34 amDon't use illegitimate free copies.anonymousboglehead wrote: ↑Sun Jun 10, 2018 12:16 pm As a fellow college student, I recommend looking for PDFs of textbooks online before spending a dime at the student store/Amazon/etc. I have friends who are seniors that downloaded every single one of their textbooks for free.
