It is technically a loan modification, but you are right that the term more frequently refers to hardship modification. I have yet to receive any payment coupons, although I have an address to send a payment to (was in the letter).

I’m assuming online payments would take at least a couple of days to link Ally to my bank account.

Was thinking about checking with the company that owns our existing loan, say "we're looking to refinance, what can you offer"... might not get what we were looking for, but might be able to get something at lower cost.
