Re: post covid 19 office work - was coronavirus a game changer for telecommunting?

I suspect things will change at a lot of companies. My megacorp has indicated a slow return to work starting with those who critically need to be at work to support production. Before Covid19, we were hiring heavily (still are to a degree) and struggling to find cubicle space for new employees. I su...

Re: Increase W4 or pay quarterly tax estimates?

I adjust my W4 withholding throughout the year for my W2 job depending on my 1099 income. It's pretty easy to set up a spreadsheet to track 1099 income and how much taxes will be owed on it and make sure I have enough withheld to cover. Re: Tax Forms (Rollover, Recharacterization, Conversion)

Ok hopefully these will be my final questions. I’m trying to input this into TT desktop. I was able to input the 1099’s and everything there makes sense in terms of taxes I owe. I was able to use the guided mode to say that I made a Roth IRA contribution and then recharacterized it. It had me input ...

Re: Tax Forms (Rollover, Recharacterization, Conversion)

OK thanks for the clarification. I rolled my traditional IRA's back into my workplace 401k before doing the recharacterization and conversion so my basis on the conversion is simply the difference between the amount converted and the amount I contributed.

Tax Forms (Rollover, Recharacterization, Conversion)

I'm getting myself prepared for tax season after several new financial items occurred this year. I started the year with money in my workplace 401k, a tIRA, and Roth IRA. I had contributed $5500 to my Roth IRA back in January and I am very likely going to end the year over the MAGI limit for a direct Roth IRA contribution. Build an emergency fund that is reasonable for your expected expenses and job security. Then put as much excess money into your 401k as possible. Interesting. I do have a pretty good 401k at work so rolling it over there might just be easier at this point. So I get this right, I'd first be rolling my tIRA into my 401k (solo or megacorp). Then I'd recharacterize my Roth IRA contribution from January into a tIRA. Then, some number of days later...

A Roth 401k is not a megabackdoor. Depending on your plan, there could be one, two, or all of these options for adding funds: pre-tax (traditional), post-tax, and Roth. Pre-tax reduces your taxable income and you get taxed when you withdraw. Roth gets taxed when you make the money but does not get t...

x2. I have a Vanguard Roth IRA and performed a megabackdoor with Fidelity early this year. The megabackdoor is essentially a rollover and does not count as contributions to the Roth and doesn't care if you already have IRA's set up.
