4% is the starting rate. 2 or 3% would be better if that meet you budget. You don't need live like a King when retire.

My previous employer offered me pension buy out couple of years ago. If I have had the lump sum into the S&P, it would be doubled now. But pension is guaranteed. Equity could get 1/2 off. So I chose keep the pension.

My company allows aft-tax contribution and high % contribution. Besides, all bonus is allowed. $18000 is just limit for fore-tax. I am trying to do aft-tax and do a in-service Roth rollover every year.

VTSAX is US only. It did pretty well during last couple of years. Have you consider balanced fund:VBIAX? That's 60/40 I believe. This is more kind of boglehead approach. You compare this with VTSAX for the last 5 years return 14% vs 9%. But past performance may not repeat.

I have thought of that in the beginning of this year. I elected to put bonus into 401k. Big mistake and I have learned my lesson. New year 1st thing is to lower my % of contribution. Write to congress? It is too late.

I didn't plan correctly. I reached the IRS limit of 54k. I over saved too much in my 401k. Now I will miss the employer match in next couple of paycheck. What can I do?

In some state, they have option to lock the tuition rate for state schools. So you could swtich your saved 529 into located plan. One short coming: Financial aid. 401k you have to take RMD and its taxable. Roth you can pass along to next heir and tax free. So I will take more risk in Roth. Pass along all risk and reward to next heir. 401k is my life support in my retirement, can't take too much risk.

Air plane engine, healthcare, power genenator. That's the backbone of US economy. We can live without facebook, amazon, apple but can't live without GE. Slim down and sell off other business. It will take time to turn the big shp around. It's a long term play.

5% long term in average is possible. Short term, it is unheard of. None can guarantee that. if you have a mortgage at interest of 4% after tax rate. You technically will get 5% return pre-pay you mortgage.

If your asset is off by x%. Assume it's your employer account, then trading is limited. So save your rebalance opportunity when market shifted a lot. for aft-tax account, I won't even consider rebalance too much because of cap gain tax.

Load it before congress close this loophole. Compare to aft-tax mega ira, Roth $5500 limit is peanut. Just remember to rollover aft-tax to Roth every year to separate the gain from original input. Then it will grow tax-free forever.

For 30s, 60/40 or 70/30 is very reasonable. You just need to rebalance if your target if off by 10% or more to capture the buying and selling opportunity.
